South Fraser Perimeter Road to partially open this weekend

Ribbon-cutting expected next week for completed highway

====================================

The Ladner/Burns Bog sections seem curvy (from Deltaport to Centre Street in Delta there are 18 or so changes in direction).

I imagine compromises were made to protect farmland, will be interesting to see how much congestion through the bends there is.

The "kink" visible in the upper left corner of the picture seems designed to prevent people from oversteering in the curve (otherwise why is it there?)

Detours to precede opening of SFPR
http://www.southdeltaleader.com/news/235598691.html

Starting on Sunday, drivers will be able to go on the South Fraser Perimeter Road for the first time, albeit because of a road closure. Drivers headed for Highway 99 will be detoured along the new highway 17 at this junction here (SFPR), while Highway 17A (the old highway to Ladner) will be blocked off for construction.

After close to four years of construction, the long-awaited opening of the 40-km, $1.26 billion South Fraser Perimeter Road in South Delta is nearly at hand, but there will be a few final delays before that happens.

According to the Ministry of Transportation website, Highway 17A through Ladner will be closed beginning on Sunday, Dec. 15 with the opening of the SFPR. The detour will be in place until Thursday, Dec. 19. During that time, drivers wishing to access Highway 99 to the Massey Tunnel via Tsawwassen or the Ferry Terminal will now drive onto the new SFPR highway at the 28th Avenue onramp.

Meanwhile, access from the north to the south will use the new SFPR interchange at Highway 99 at the sign reading “Exit 26.”

For those people who are going to local areas in Ladner or along Ladner Trunk Road, drivers are being asked to use Arthur Drive or the Deltaport Way as access.

When the SFPR is opened, the highway will be named 17 and the existing one renamed to 17A. As well, on Monday Delta Council approved the expenditures of $50,000 to install two signs along 17/17A to promote Ladner Village and Tsawwassen.

The approval is conditional upon the signs being designed to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure standards, including base design, breakaway connections and reflectivity. The sign leading to Tsawwassen will ask northbound drivers leaving the ferry to turn right on 56th Street, while the sign leading to Ladner will ask drivers to turn left on Ladner Trunk Road.

Are they narrowing the old Hwy 17 (now 17A)?

Just at the ramp. It widens back out to two lanes each direction after the overpass.

Rushed construction much? The road surface looks rather bumpy/wavy...

Keep in mind that's a super zoom lens. Any bumps will be exaggerated. The corner is roughly 550m from the foreground on that photo assuming the road lines are 3m long with 6m spacing.

Hard to say until it is driven on. I do notice some excellent use of reflectors on top of the Jersey barriers. Looks like there are no reflectors on the center lanes which would cause visibility issues on the freshly dark pavement especially during rainy nights when the water-based lane markings literally become invisible. But that is consistent with typical BC highways anyway.

Old Yale Road

Can someone help we understand WHY there is going to be a traffic light at Old Yale Road. It appears so close to the Tannery Road interchange and the Old Yale connects to it via Timberland (or at least going by Google Maps) - seems redundant.

As noted in the SFPR alignment map:

At Old Yale Road, short-term improvements include a temporary intersection connecting to SFPR. The area has been protected for a future interchange, when TransLink’s plans for the Pattullo Bridge replacement are complete.

Seems redundant... yup... but keep in mind this is a BC highway!

That intersection should've been Right In Right Out. Bah humbug.

My car is lowered on slightly stiffer suspension and I don't mind slightly wavy as long as it's not cracked or broken up asphalt and stuff like that. Or speed bumps. I hate speed bumps.

I have never been on this road, but do I dare ask what the speed limit is on the separated highway? Are they pulling a golden ears bridge trick and putting 60/80 on it?

Is the map correct in that only the short Delta portion will be opening on Sunday, or will it be the entire thing?

Only portion that is opening is the Delta portion south of Highway 99.

Portions that are nowpen o either fully or have traffic diverted to some degree:

Surrey: Bridgeview Drive to Highway 1
Surrey/Delta: 103A Avenue to River Road connection (east of Alex Fraser Bridge)
Delta: Highway 99 and points south.

So the route will be used in 3 separate segments. I think within a week or two it should be formally opened.

am I the only one that thinks there should be a toll on this road too? Maybe not a hefty one like they seem to have decided to go with on the Port Mann but as this is a major bypass route for the PM wouldn't it make sense?

Too many ways on and off.

We have so many bridges in the area which are both expensive to build and obvious choke points. I think they should all have a nominal toll (say $1).

I agree. I believe that all of the major bridges in the lower mainland should have a toll of $1. For the majority of them, it would be reinstating tolls.

And by major I refer to: Lion's Gate, Ironworkers Memorial, Arthur Laing, Oak Street, Knight Street, Massey Tunnel, Alex Fraser, Queensborough, Patullo and Pitt River.

Of those bridges, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I believe only the Alex Fraser and Arthur Laing have never had tolls previously. I know for a fact that the Alex Fraser never has.
