Re the parade

I'm not sure that's James N. It looks more like King street to me or perhaps Market near James. Not sure.
I think it is actually James North. The buildings are on the East side of the street between what is now Wilson and Rebecca. Taken before the Federal Building was built. The last building in the row looks like the one that is at James and Wilson.

The building just left of the pole --- could it be the SE corner of James and Wilson? Or even the NW corner of the same intersection (Mex-I-Can bldg) ?

^I think the Federal Building was built in the early 1850s, so I'm not sure that's the case.

I don't have time to dig up a photo right now but I'm feeling a little more confident now that we're looking at King St W looking towards MacNab. Perhaps I'll poke around the Internet later for a similar pic.

By the way, great photo of the former, former courthouse. I've seen few photos over the years.

Doc Awesome knows his stuff.

I love those bird's eye views. Having satellite imagery today is great, but the artistry just isn't there.

Yeah, I love that old drawing, too. It's interesting to see how far those inlets ran into the city. If you have a keen eye you can spot them even to this day - dry, of course.

^ OMG, Gridlock!!! So glad we solved that problem. Remain vigilant Hamilton! No 2-way streets for you.

The funny thing is that appears to be a one-way King Street. Back when we actually needed such lane capacity, I guess.

^Great photo! I missed that one the first time round. It looks like James St looking north somewhere south of King. Date? Not sure but traffic does appear to be one-way, so that would put it post-1950s. I'm not good with cars but I'd guess mid-to-late-60s. Great shot - kind of a NYC traffic jam vibe.

Has to be at least 1964. That bus there, HSR 622, was part of a series built between '64 and '68:

Is that smoke in the background? Industry? Or is it fire (looks kinda like everyone was trying to flee )

Those wires down the middle of the street - a remnant of a streetcar line?

On the left, it looks like a sliver of the old Robinson's "R" logo, so this probably is James looking north from Main.

^I think you're right about the location. And yes, that's the Robinson's 'R' that you see there.

I hadn't noticed that smoke, if that's what it is. Interesting. There's a reason for that photo, so perhaps that's what it is.

I'm not sure whether or not streetcars used those overhead wires or not but they were certainly used by the tolleybuses that took their place.

Robinson's R - and an eatons sign.

I'm wondering if this is a spec photo... Perhaps the traffic jam IS the story. I can't imagine that was a daily scene.

The "Cloud" in the background looks to me like trees.

I really love this picture and I would like to find the original. It is the most "real" I've ever seen Hamilton look

I totally missed the Eaton's lettering.

It does look like trees, I was thinking the same thing. But given the depth of the image (and it looks like a telephoto shot) those would have to be some mighty ones. The white patch looks a little odd too.

So much happening in this image.

I wasn't thinking James had a trolley route, but you're right - the westbound Barton trolley used it to get to Main.
