Let's not get carried away now. Rogers seems to want to make its name synonymous with hockey in Canada. I very much doubt their interest extends anywhere beyond that, especially where Edmonton is concerned.

Not trying to read too much into it, but that was an interesting exchange between Iveson and the Rogers guy regarding "tower expansion" and the difference between office towers and cell phone towers.

OilersNow tweeted 13 years, $700 million but then deleted the tweet.

Correction: Rogers investing 700 million dollars to the Province of Alberta, not with the Oilers.
Not sure what this means

That's Rogers' investment into the Alberta market as a whole, not the naming rights figures. That includes marketing and infrastructure investment.

They just misunderstood, I think, as did a lot of people. They assumed the naming rights only were $700M for 13 years, but the naming rights are actually an extension of the deal Rogers & the Oilers signed in October to be the official telecommunications partner; and the $700M also includes network upgrades throughout Alberta.

If so, they can move Sonic and Bounce out of the hubcap district and into the AED while they're at it!

MacKinnon: One-stop digital shopping, powered by hockey
Rogers deal with Oilers goes far beyond arena naming rights

By John MacKinnon, Edmonton Journal
December 3, 2013

EDMONTON - The Oilers players are not just athletes anymore; they are on-ice pitchmen in a 13-year, $700-million multi-platform play by Rogers Communications to enhance its Alberta footprint by selling cellphone plans and much else as they leverage the cultural imperative in the Heartland of Hockey.

When the Oilers open the 2016-17 National Hockey League season in Rogers Place, as the yet-to-be-built downtown arena will be called, they’ll be playing in “one of the most technologically enabled stadiums in North America,” said John Boynton, Rogers executive vice-president and chief marketing officer, at a news conference to announce the arena naming rights deal...

Arena name disappoints

David Staples
Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, December 04, 2013

Excitement, envy, suspicion, bitterness, satisfaction. Yes, Edmonton hockey fans are experiencing many and varied emotions about the naming of the city's new downtown arena.

As for me, I was hit with an unexpected emotion at the Oilers news conference on Tuesday, an event built around Mayor Don Iveson, Oilers president Patrick La-Forge and Rogers executive John Boynton dropping a curtain on an image of Edmonton's coming ice palace...

^ Cry me a river Staples...what did you honestly expect from a corporate sponsorship? The Cheemo Perogy Dome?

I strongly suspect Rogers wanted this name to be about them, and if "Coliseum" were anywhere in the name, that's how the building would only be referred to: "The Coliseum."
Exactly. It was smart of them to stay away from this for that reason. In the end, it shows that national brands are paying attention to the Edmonton market and willing to throw some cash down to associate their name with what is happening here. I can support this branding and will have no problem calling it Rodgers Place.

This.

Skyreach Center, West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix, Finning Raceway....

it wasn't to long ago that Edmonton couldn't attract a national brand like Rogers to buy naming rights for anything...I welcome this change.

I agree. The name sounds fine, and it's good to see sponsorship from that level

It's too bad the city won't see a dime from the branding of it's own building though

The Rogers Drop would have been a cooler name, but whatever.

Complaining about the name "Rogers Place" isn't worth the ink to print it.

David Staples, don't stoop down to Kerry's level.
