Great shots.

My guess for the protruding box is that they won't complete the top half of the frame until the floors on the protuding bits have been competed - so that the crane can access the space.

Same question as Locked in - what's up with the opaque panels?
Hopefully just temporary, as the one closest to Kngston Hotel has a clear one above it.

I actually like the look of the Toronto one better, although it doesn't seem to jut out as far:

Agreed! Love or hate Toronto, they are producing outstanding examples of well-proportioned neo-modernist buildings that, because of their height and IMO vastly superior architecture, far exceed our most recent projects.

Their "Telus" tower will age far better than ours, when doing modernist or neo-modernist, simple and elegant with top quality materials is the way to go.

It will still be a moment before the office tower becomes visible from my angle. My view of the Sun Tower is going remain, but the view of Burnaby Mountain will get blocked. Or at least it will be a close call.

I think it's maybe a bit premature to assign which is best. Unlike the clean lines of neo-modernist buildings, Vancouver's Telus guy is pretty complicated and ornate in a way that I think can't be judged fairly from renders alone. Particularly the residential section which to me is poised to be either pretty cool or kind of dumb, but impossible to tell which until we see it in person. (I also reject the idea that tall=good, give me a short interesting building over a 100 storey box.)

I was really just referring to the protruding part, but overall, the TO tower does have a cleaner look to it.
I don't think any Henriquez tower/building would have a sleek, clean look.

and please, the Toronto version could be in Mississauga and no one would give it a second thought. there's nothing wrong with it but there's nothing exactly great with it either. let's wait and see the details on the Vancouver version before we make generalizations.

The box on the Toronto Telus building is quite forgettable and doesn't really catch the eye at all from street level. The Vancouver one seems much more pronounced and will probably have a much greater effect.

As you can see here it's really easy to miss the Toronto box from street level, there is almost no overhang. For the first year or so I didnt even know it had that feature.
