^While I certainly agree that there needs to be specific times for construction throughout the day (I'm looking at you, China), that video might be the most annoying thing I've ever seen. The woman screaming at the top of her lungs to try and get some peace and quiet fulfills my monthly quota of irony.

Wow. I used to live in Vancouver and many times I feel like coming back. But seeing this video and what kind of person may end up my neighbor my desire quickly faded.

If they want to change the rules they should contact the city, not prevent somebody from doing their fully-legal fully-permitted job. The next work day they would have to hurry to make up for the lost time and hurrying in construction is never a good idea.

She didn't really yell as much as she had a very smug self-important attitude. It's absolutely disgusting to see it. If I was him, I would have never turned off the engine so that the cops arrive, then I would report criminal trespassing, sue them for lost revenue (I would lose, that's not the point though - the point is to show them what pointless actions like theirs look like) and give them a handbook on what civic action is. Because this, is not civic action. It's hooliganism.

I'd rather have the 2nd Avenue crack addicts as neighbours than those psychopaths.
Please tell me you meant 6:00AM, not PM. I know when I was doing construction work we weren't allowed to turn on heavy machine until 7:30am. If people are complaining about noise at 6:00PM I am genuinely concerned how they function in the real world.

I remember when I lived across from Maynards Block construction in the heritage section of the exchange, it was so loud the second 730 rolled around. Because of the requirement to keep the old windows (that didn't seal) the second all the heavy machinery turned on you couldn't hear anything in that apartment.

I'm not sure what they think they are doing at 6pm? COnstruction without special permits and notice is allowed to be conducted between 730 and 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 8pm on Saturday. There are special permits and exceptions that can be made, however these come at a cost to Contractors and Developers.

I'm not sure what the point of having a decibel reader was here?

actually really nice work on the heritage part. for the rest: the contrast in form is distressing. man, seriously, i don't get how vancouver people haven't rebelled en mass against your architects and their civic overseers, might as well just be a barcode.

and the "artemisia" funeral home place... man, if i still lived up in the vanistan there, i'd probably print up some buttons with that on there, no text, just that image of the development, hand it out at urbanism/architecture events as a sort of fatalistic political statement about how incredibly lost the battle seems

Heritage facade

this building is the worst pastiche of cliche ideas we've seen in a long time in Vancouver…every facade has a different concept…its a catch-all for other ideas found on henriquez buildings …and what a junk;lie the result is

shame on the firm, the developers and the city for allowing this to happen

The funeral home looks so bizarre and out-of-place that I'm sure people will think it's an intentional "statement" of some sort. It'll definitely be a conversation piece!

The heritage facade on the Alexandra looks like part of a movie set that was rolled out and parked on the street. Too bad it can't be transported somewhere more suitable.

As 'odd' as the exterior façade looks on this building, it is the main entry to the tower and the interior lobby is very nicely done, upscale and definitely unified in its design. The whole thing is growing on me, although I wish they would adjust the colour of the heritage section to fit a bit smoother with the overall design of the building. A close look reveals that the finish is not yet complete, so perhaps it will improve.

Changing City Updates had a mention of it earlier this month, with a render showing the heritage facade in white - but the sponge-painting on the wall with the entrance (from transition) says to me that the facade will remain mustard.

http://changingcitybook.com/2013/11/04/alexandra/

Too bad they didn't design a canopy over the entrance that highlighted, rather than truncated, the arched doorway.

The trellis panels look like the one on 700 West 8th. (and the holes are spaced too far apart near the bottom for vines to grab hold properly, but they probably want to discourage people from climbing it)
