The first two of 114 Mark 1 SkyTrain cars that are being refurbished at a cost of $37.9 million went into service Wednesday.
Not only does the work extend the life of the Bombardier cars another 13 years or so, it increases their capacity.
By removing four seats, something referred to as “flex space” will be created for eight more passengers to stand.
Jiana Ling, a spokeswoman for TransLink, said the refurbishing includes everything from the vehicles’ electrical system, to floors, doors and interior amenities such as a better public address system.
The most noticeable difference may be the new blue exterior paint.
The old, square cars are decked out primarily in white, with red and blue accents — along with accents of rust picked up from being in service since 1986.
The federal government’s Gas Tax Fund provided $28.5 million of the cost of the refurbishment, with TransLink paying the balance from its capital budget and doing the work at its B.C. Rapid Transit Company facility.
While the expenditure is significant, new SkyTrain cars with the same capacity would have cost an estimated $262 million. The bulk of the vehicles have reached their expected design life of 25 years.
All the work is expected to be complete by December 2016.
(Emphasis mine) - four seats taken out...thinking single seats facing forward on both ends...i.e. no 2 pair seats, all singles and bench in the middle...
