No where did it say anything about what I suggested which was to subdivide the land so that multiple developers of various scales could attempt to build. I find that rather disheartening, them suggesting that one developer come in and build the whole thing means that it keeps a lot of smaller (and some say more innovative) firms from contending.

Sport Manitoba is fighting a city order to landscape a portion of its Exchange district property that will soon house a state-of-the-art training facility.

When Sport MB applied for the demo permit in 2010 (Smart Bag Warehouse at 147 Pacific), they committed to landscaping the vacant space to prevent illegal parking. So, three years later and they haven't done anything, and don't want to do anything because they might start the fieldhouse next year.

Just highlights the need for demo permits (especially for historic structures) to be tied to *concrete* plans for redevelopment, not plans dependent on three levels of government funding coming together sometime in the nebulous future.

Another nice little urban infill project going on in St. Boniface. I used to live about 3 or 4 blocks from this lot and it was definitely the biggest eyesore in the area (which is saying something considering I lived down the street from the Westeel plant!). It is great to hear that some more units are going in there and a few businesses!

To those that know it, Winnipeg has always been difficult to label or categorize. Cosmopolitan yet rooted in an agrarian tradition, at times resolutely afraid of any perception of non-utility or cultural expression for its own sake, the city can and does produce music, art, literature, and architecture that is interrogative and wholly demonstrative of a pronounced local voice. A construction industry that not only withstood recent economic downturns but thrived in what most consider a “have-not” province frames an architectural environment that sees world-class projects going up alongside the worst lowest-common-denominator, developer-driven buildings. Even the weather plays its role: bitterly cold winters and at times tropical summers that residents cheerfully endure with a pioneer’s hardiness and pride. It is interesting, given these conditions, that Peter Sampson Architecture Studio has with the Assiniboine Park washrooms so cleverly interrogated the processes of sustainability and transformation. Through a relatively humble typology and program, PSA Studio has created a deceptively nuanced contextual dialogue.

Beautiful! In the past Winnipeg hasn't always done a very good job of maintaining this type of infrastructure... hopefully these "boxes" will be well taken care of.

So these residence are blocking a "noise reducing" wall along a very high traffic route that, imo would benefit them and their property value because they think "the city" is ashamed of them? can someone please help me understand this better...

I think the issue is less the fact that they don't want the noise blocking wall, and more that there are concerns that having the back lane blocked from view will encourage vandalism and crime along that stretch. Though the owners make a point that you can't just put walls up around the "ugly" parts of the city that you don't like. It would be infinitely more productive to encourage and subsidize the residents to beautify their properties. Maybe a large muti-garage mural along the backland instead? They also point out that as "ugly" as their properties are, there is a very ugly used car lot right across the street that isn't getting any attention.

I don't see $7m as an unreasonable expense to a) at least attempt to improve the appearance of the stretch of Route 90 leading away from the airport, and b) provide some soundproofing to residents nearby. But if the residents are that dead set against it, then spend the money on something else in some other part of the city. Why bother trying to persuade people to accept something that will benefit them?

A subsidy to beautify properties is a non-starter though since no amount of "beautification" will change the fact that it's just a backlane. Funding wolf murals will make that stretch look even worse than it does now.

I don't think the Chamber wants to put murals. I believe they want to put giant advertisements (promoting the ZOO, Museums, Ballets, etc...). You see these type of ads in many other North American cities near their airports. Cancun & Las Vegas are examples.

Another example of these ads is Yonge Street in Toronto. Ads covering the 2nd, 3rd, 4th floor walls & windows of old buildings and Eaton Centre. I'd love to see the Convention Centre and Portage Place have giant ads promoting events and stores.

FYI I'm usually not a mural fan either though I've seen some amazing ones in Hawaii and Vancouver.

To me, few things say "distressed urban area" as much as murals painted on the sides of buildings. Like Belfast during the troubles...
