Another great trade mission from Nutter to Houston and Panama

Just days after returning from a trade mission to the United Kingdom and Israel, Mayor Michael Nutter has announced that his next trip is just a few days away.

He'll be accompanying Vice President Joe Biden to Panama and Houston.

The two-day tour will be a chance for Nutter and Biden to examine the Panama Canal expansion project, which will double the capacity of the canal and allow significantly larger ships to call on U.S. ports.

The trip starts on November 18 with a tour of the Port of Houston. Others invited on the trip are: Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx; U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA); U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL); Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake of Baltimore; and Mayor Kasim Reed of Atlanta.

The trip comes just as Philadelphia is undergoing a major dredging project to deepen the Delaware River to 45 feet. That will allow larger ships to pass through.

“There is great potential to increase economic activity at our port and create good wage-paying jobs for Philadelphians," said Nutter in a statement.

This might put the kibosh on the Comcast 2nd super tall announcement speculated on Nov. 20th. I would think the Mayor would want to be in on this when it happens.

But, as the article states, it's just a two day tour starting on the 18th. He could very well be back in Philly on the 20th.......

Dude, it's a CABLE company, as in high-speed internet, leading-edge media and communications technology, and video conferencing. Not to mention that the big November 20th shindig already involves multiple cities and virtual video conferences. The Mayor could easily be "present" even while physically in Panama.

But I think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves.

Maybe the IT folks will superimpose the Mayor standing next to Brian Roberts shaking his hands and the photo ops for the media. But hey, what do I know about public relations or publicity for both the City of Philly and Comcast. Goodwill like this has the potential to attract new employers to the city and sends the message that the Mayor and his administration is willing to work with you to bring or grow your business in the city.

Well. They are going to Panama because of the widening of the Panama Canal and the dredging of the Delaware River. It makes perfect sense to me to go there to draw more activity for the ports along the Delaware River. Nutter was one of the few invited on the trip.

When the White House calls I suppose that you must respond. the mayor's foreign junkets certainly seem to be getting him the attention of the Democrat Party. I hope that his overseas efforts are getting The City of Philadelphia at least as much. And I'm not one of those pooh-poohing his trips but they do have an appearance to some.

It definitely stirred up some interest from the UK and Israel. Some Israel delegates will be coming to Philadelphia soon on a trade mission of their own to check out the city. That will be a great time to show off the city to a burgeoning overseas country. Even if we can draw two or three companies to open up offices in the city, that is a HUGE step forward IMO.

The already struggling Pennsylvania Convention Center lost an important customer. UBM Canon, an international communications firm who held an event at the Convention Center this year, canceled visits scheduled for 2015 and 2017. According to AxisPhilly the company had a bad experience (low attendance and labor hassles) in Philadelphia and will hold its 2015 and 2017 events in New York.

New management at convention center. It needs a new board as well. Current board is composed of political hacks and the source of the center's problem - union's Johnny Doc.


The center's board is bringing in SMG to try to attract to Philadelphia a larger slice of the slow-growing national conventions business, and to try to persuade leaders of the carpenters and other labor unions representing workers on shows at the center to adopt more flexible work rules - meaning there would be fewer union hours on some jobs in exchange for an overall rise in shows and attendance, for a net gain in union hours.

McClintock said SMG was able to reach work-rule agreements with other locals of the same unions when it took over management of convention centers in Chicago and Detroit.

Given the very small marketing budget any exposure that the city gets is a good thing.
