There is an awful lot of local skepticism about that notion, but I think Homewood could go the way of East Liberty with the right sort of targeted investments, particularly if they build out from the Busway stop.

The Pittsburgh location will be the company's second. It currently has more than 30 employees in Palo Alto, and plans to grow the Pittsburgh office to become as large as the California one.

"We picked Pittsburgh because of the great and growing startup community," he said. "With the incubators, accelerators and all of the activity in the East End, it makes Pittsburgh very appealing."

Additionally, Bellino said leadership in the city has been receptive, including newly elected Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and Councilman Dan Gilman.

Stories like this make me very excited about the tech scene in Pittsburgh. Nice to see us getting some attention from outside the region.

Homewood is primed for development, however, if any Pittsburgh Neighborhood is "to go" next, it might be Larmer. There's lots of flat, develop-able land (a rarity) and it's close to Bakery Square as well as E. Liberty, I see it beginning to be developed in the next couple years, possibly in unison with Homewood. However, it is sad that the Hill District has been left out of the development, I wish that neighborhood could become more than it is, it is close to not only Downtown, but Oakland and it has much potential.

Sorry for the rant-like tone.

There's been tons of development in the Hill District over the past 15 years. It still has a long way to go... but it certainly has not been quiet.

Trek Development Group expects to close on a deal to buy the Washington Trust Building at the intersection of Main and Beau streets, and bring more residents through apartment living. “We think it will go a long way towards revitalizing downtown Washington and an iconic building,” said William Gatti, president of the Pittsburgh development firm. “It will be something people will be proud of.”

Gatti declined to say how much his company is paying for the landmark, built in 1902, across from the Beaux Arts classical-style Washington County Courthouse. He expects to spend $18 million to overhaul the historic structure once financing is in place. Crews will renovate ground-floor retail space and offices throughout the building and add 44 apartments. Monthly rent for the apartments is expected to range from $600 to $950, Gatti said. Construction could begin next fall and should take about a year, he said.

Generally, the transformation of cities like Washington into thriving satellite cities could be a big part of the revitalization of the Metro Area, including to the benefit of the core area (see also the notes on the transit center they are building with bus service to Downtown Pittsburgh).

Retail strip Indigo Square brings new shops to East Liberty

The latest wave of the East Liberty renaissance includes a fashionable face-lift -- and new spots to shop for the holidays -- thanks to the arrival of contemporary clothes and food shops, a luxury bath and kitchen store and designer Kiya Tomlin's new studio.


The up-and-coming retail strip on Broad Street known as Indigo Square has welcomed a handful of higher-end tenants in recent months. Washington, D.C.-based Nigel Parkinson of Parkinson Construction is heading development in the area, which will include a hotel that's being built across the street.

"There's such an energy, and there's so much hope," said Ms. Tomlin, wife of Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. She moved her design studio, Kiya Tomlin Pittsburgh, there over the summer after being located inside Meadeworth Interiors at Penn Circle West, East Liberty.

"When I was at Meadeworth, I knew it was going to be a temporary situation. It was kind of like my little stepping stone," she said. "Here [there is] open space and the windows and the trees and knowing there is going to be a hotel there and people just walking and can stop in and chat. To be social, that's what I was looking for."

By appointment, Ms. Tomlin can help clients learn about their body type and design apparel fit for them. Her "fitted dress" concept provides women with a few dress selections with choices for how to customize the neckline, fabrics, sleeves and hemline.

Traffic on Butler Street near the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium in Highland Park will be shifted to a temporary road today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced. The 327-foot-long Heth's Run Bridge, built in 1914 and rated structurally deficient, will be replaced. The $14.9 million project includes reconstruction of 870 feet of Butler Street, improvements to One Wild Place and upgraded drainage, sidewalks and traffic signals.

Finally! This project has been in the pipes for years and that bridge (yes, technically it's a bridge) is so crumbling it scares me, but I'm glad to see all the waterfront access that will be gained through this project.

I drove past the Penn Lincoln hotel in Wilkinsburg today and they are putting up fencing around it. Not sure if that means it's a good or bad thing for that building.

Thats awesome news, I love that building, glad something is being done with it. If Im not mistaken that building was designed by Osterling, whose architectural firm office still exists near the baseball stadium here in Pittsburgh.

By the way, that row home they partially tore down about a month or so ago, is now completely gone in the Mexican War Streets, such a shame. I hope that guy rebuilds it to look exactly the same.

From the looks of that article, there doesn't seem to be anything planned. It does look like a piece of architecture that would be a shame to lose, but maybe the next development can justify this building's demolition.

One can only hope, right?
