Disappointing about the Braves situation. Would much rather have seen the Falcons pushed to the burbs (like so many NFL teams are doing with their larger stadiums and sea of parking requirements) and the Braves' area improved. 82 home games = major opportunity to retain fans in the city for nights out on the town. Thinking similar to areas around so many baseball fields that exist in urban cities right now - Fenway, Wrigley, Camden, AT&T, Petco, Busch, etc etc. Football stadiums were never meant to be downtown stadiums - I don't know why Atlanta chose to pick the Falcons over the Braves. Both Ted and Arthur (who apparently don't get along with each other) are powerful and influential men. I think even more so than the lack of transit (apparently not an issue for them to relocate to Cobb) is the lack of things to do around Turner. It's really not a good game experience.

Would make a lot more sense to go to the old GM location. They should put the Falcons there as well. But one never expects any logic or rationality to be injected into discussions of sports and their often over the top bosses. Those who still are delusional and believe that the teams belong to the people need to face reality.

Kindly move this to the Atlanta sub-forum and start a new discussion there.

The map represents tickets sold. I've a feeling that you don't have a clue where tickets have been sold. So your statement is totally ignorant and absurd. Let me also say that most of my coworkers that live in Alpharetta are huge Braves supporters that attend games. With that being said, there are few to my knowledge here at Plaza Midtown that even think of going to a Braves game.

More sport team insanity. This is a loss for the city and a loss for Cobb county. What an awful, awful idea. I live in Cobb and see little positive about this There is very little that can be to handle the traffic as well and extremely unlikely that any transit will come of this. Add to that, that Turner Field isn't really old and has more advantages... I wish it were a little more cohesive with the city, but still overall was fine. This just sucks.

Geez... way to get so butthurt over me stating that the map displays tickets being sold at locations where no one lives. I will be sure that all my future posts are not ignorant and not absurd. Thanks for pointing that out for me. That would be extremely embarrassing if I were to do something like that again.

My apologies. I didn't realize how harsh it sounded. I should have put LOL to soften the mood of my reply.

Ha It sure is difficult to read a person's tone without some sort of smiley face or LOL at the end of a quote. So anyways to stay on topic...they are building apartment towers in midtown and the braves are moving to Cobb eh?

Time to move on - we are getting two new stadiums to replace ones that are perfectly ok and a lot of people will make a lot of money. Sounds ideal to me. Neither building is a skyscraper. Hard not to be cynical - especially when the world baseball champions play in a century old stadium.

I'm not sure if you are joking, but in case you are not…I'm perfectly fine where I live. My night on the town, doesn't include going to a Braves game. It's just as much fun for me to go to one of the pubs. One can appreciate what other area have to offer, without having to live there.

First of all, your constant rants re: "urban cities" has grown tiresome. If Atlanta isn't urban, what exactly is it? Fenway & Wrigley are hardly fair comparisons at all, as they have been in place for decades. And please explain the situation with Philadelphia's stadium placement.

Secondly, 'Atlanta' didn't have anything to do with this. This is a private business decision, with zero input from 'Atlanta' or the greater community.

And newsflash! Ted Turner has absolutely nothing to do with the Braves, and hasn't for quite some time now.

That being said, this is a completely idiotic decision. If this is for real, I will never go over there for a game.

The only person to benefit from the Braves new location would've been pitcher, Pascal Perez.

He didn't say it, but I'll respond to your question. I think you're being a little too literal with your definition of "hellhole". Obviously the area isn't a ghetto, but considering this is a forum where most people prize urbanity and don't view sprawl development kindly, you can imagine why people don't hold this area in high regard. Simply view the area around the proposed stadium - fast food restaurants, strip malls, 12 lane surface streets, suburban malls, and office parks all surrounded by seas of parking. Even the most urban portions of the area aren't realistically accessible to pedestrians nor are they connected to any sort of logical street grid (and I use grid loosely here). Basically, the issues many here have with Dunwoody and to an extent Buckhead, magnified by 10, and minus MARTA or the possibility of.

Finally someone with a logical response. It's not that the area isn't "nice" per say, it's rather the setup isn't what most people on this board prefer. The large arterial roads and 75/285 traffic with less alternate routes than being intown may be why someone would think of it as a "hellhole". Sitting in traffic on 285 could be viewed as hell. This on top of little to no option for transit.

Seems to me that the area selected is perfect for what it looks like the Braves are trying to achieve: their own hermetically sealed universe in which they are in control of virtually every aspect of the fan's experience while on the property - from entry to parking to souvenir shopping. There is plenty of space for some type of year-round experiential park/museum/shop/dine complex on the 41 frontage that could be set apart from the stadium proper. There's even room for them to develop their own themed hotel on the site.

Look at the geographical setup. It's a large piece of land that can be master planned and developed from the get go. It's surrounded by highways, office parks and large apartment complexes that can be fenced off and access denied to the facility. No existing street grid or single family homes - or churches - to deal with.

This may not be what most of us consider to be a great urban sporting event experience but clearly the Braves organization has decided that this is just the type of set up they can form into an environment that their fan-base wants.

After 40+ years of dealing with shady gypsy lots, tacky vendors that decrease their retail sales, a decaying neighborhood that the city seems unwilling or unable to help clean up, decreasing satisfaction with the fan experience outside of the park and finally, the bad publicity of having a fan get shot a block away from the stadium while leaving the game, the Braves got fed up. I can't say I blame them for wanting to get away from all that drama.

It looks to me like Atlanta city government just took it for granted all these years that the Braves would just shut up and live with their bad surroundings for the privilege of being in the city. I wonder how much the recent dust-up between Mayor Reed and the street vendors weighed on this decision?

Absolutely hilarious! Yes, United BMW surely validates the mess that area is.

I meant TRAFFIC HELLHOLE.

I enjoy going to Vinings occasionally, but the traffic at 75 & 285 is beyond hideous to me and causes me to avoid that area like the plague. One of my best friends works for a company located in the Galleria, and he won't go to the office unless absolutely necessary for the same reason.

But hey, if you love it so much over there I saw some cute townhomes on the news that are immediately adjacent to the property this shrine is being built on.

I love urban as much as anyone else on this board. With that being said, I also understand financial and business responsibility. But, lets not get this twisted. All of the urbanity pride in the world would not suggest that being next to a 12 to 14 lane interstate is that urban. Nobody wants to walk around the five block corridor that is east and south of the stadium. That area is extremely unsafe. And you wouldn't walk north because it is basically I-20, and west is walking under the urban pedestrian friendly I-75 and I-85. The point is that there's no urban experience over there.
As far as traffic, yes its bad all over with the worse probably being near Henry County. Its a nightmare wherever you go, and getting off the side streets in the city isn't any better than just staying on the interstates.
At the end of the day, IMO, the hellhole by far is the summerhill community that the stadium sits, and there's no urban/nightlife experience that anybody on this board would honestly want to go.
