In the interests of inter-urban harmony and general peace and fellowship amongst all Atlantic Canadian brethren, I will not respond to
q12's comments regarding
"Moncton kool-aid drinkers"
If I were to read between the lines, I would say that both Bass Pro and Cabela's
are interested in the Moncton market. Moncton is central, especially to the non-urban areas of the region, and would be a natural place for retailers such as this to set up.
I think Cabela's plans are better formulated. They have a proposed building site, a committed developer and have a plan which was passed at the Moncton PAC. I think they are further ahead in the process than Bass Pro Shops
but Bass Pro somehow caught wind of Cabela's plans and they decided to steal Cabela's thunder by announcing their own store first.
I think we may see both retailers opening in Moncton in 2015 as announced. There
are reasons why two similar retailers like this might consider opening in the same community.
These are both destination retailers. If someone is going to drive two hours to go to Cabela's for a special shopping trip, might it not make sense for a second similar store to open next door? You might in fact entice even more people to make the trip, especially for the chance to do some comparison shopping. If on the other hand Cabela's opened in Moncton and Bass Pro opened in (for example) Fredericton, you would be splitting the retail tourism market, with people going to either Bass Pro or Cabela's
but not both. By being in the same city, you are much more likely for customers to frequents both stores at the same time.
I think both stores in Moncton in 2015 is a definite possibility and likely will happen…...
