I have a family member who is exactly like this. You guys are more on the mark than you realize, if you've never had to deal with it.

It's embarrassing, it's frustrating, and oftentimes it's downright 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 scary.

I've had freinds like that too. Not necessarily even alcoholics, but definite problem drinkers whose ugly sides bubble to the surface when they drink. It can actually be quite a scary experience because you never know when the switch is going to be flicked, and you never quite know what'll happen next.

He's probably be fun to do meth with while rampaging through the streets with no clothes on though.

I agree. He's not some far-right wingnut, but rather a centre-right...erm... wingnut. His brother is, by most accounts, far more conservative. One can sense the mayor's ambivalence about his uber-conservative reputation based on past drunken utterances. For instance, the confrontation at the hockey game 7 or 8 years ago, when he yelled at bystanders the illogical, "You r-r-right-wing c-c-c-commie bastards!". Or the more recent recording (I don't recall which one, specifically), when he mused, "They expect me to be right-wing..."
Hm, now we might be hitting the impetus, the driving force behind his abuse. Just as dark.

Oh god. One of my closest friends has a bit of a problem with alcohol. He doesn't drink frequently, but when he does drink, he binge drinks and things can go pretty awry. Anything from throwing up, behaving belligerently toward police, removing clothes, getting involved in fisticuffs, and saying things that will later be regretted.

It really ruins everyone's nights, because everyone has to take care of him and make sure he doesn't hurt himself or others.

y'all? Are we in Arkansas or something?

what a ridiculous statement. Are you really suggesting that Rob Ford is beyond reproach? What a load of horseshit.

Maybe that is what I will toss his way. He is nothing but a big turd anyhow.

So, what you're saying is that your sins (I'm not a religious nut btw, just thought that particular quote applies in the RoFo case) .... what you're saying by changing my quote and leaving my name on it, which is very bad form btw ... what you are really saying rousseau (Rousseau who popularized 'the general will of the people', ie. democracy, ie. democratically elected leaders, i.e.. Rob Ford) is that your sins are forgivable where Rob Ford's are not.

Anyway, message to obviously everyone here who is just dripping with hatred for the man (careful with hatred, it's not healthy): He's not resigning and there's nothing you can do about it. Quit trying to subvert democracy.

What kind of "reproach" did you have in mind? Sounds like y'all want to lynch him. You're only option is to vote for his opponent next October. Maybe you should start accepting that fact and start organizing a candidate/campaign. Or just continue to spew hatred for a troubled man, cause that's really helpful.

Yup. So do I.

It's embarrassing. And has been downright terrifying in person for me. That's mainly what I was relating to Ford actually.

That's not the only option, ace. Council is going to be considering a motion to appeal to the province to have him removed, though Wynne has little appetite to get involved. Of course, anyone with half an ounce of self-respect and good counsel would have resigned long ago. Ford has neither. If you actually feel he hasn't done enough to be forcibly removed, democratically elected or not, you're living in loonyville. You're probably one of those who was incensed 5 years ago when the NDP and Liberals got together to form a coalition, which was entirely within their right in a parliamentary system, only to have their gambit snuffed out by a graspingly desperate, power-hungry Harper and his prorogation.

Yes, that's precisely what I'm saying. I'd ask what your point was, but you're a troll, and I'm too busy subverting democracy to bother anyway.

You've GOT to be kidding me, pal.

Are you really saying that the Mayor of Canada's largest city shouldn't be held to a higher standard of behaviour than Joe Six-Pack at the RCL? The Mayor is the leader of his/her City; the spokesperson; the face of the City -- I would hope that the person who represents my city on the national and international stage would, at the very least, know how to carry him/her self with at least some level of decorum.

Good to know there are so many people on here harbouring such anit-democratic values. Scary, actually.

Here, QFT:

Quote:
As it stands, only two things will stop him being mayor.

One is that if he is convicted of a crime the provincial government can remove him.

The second is that voters will turf him next October. The chattering classes who cringed at the idea of Mayor Ford have waited three years. What’s one more?

And besides, they love sitting around feeling better than Ford Nation.

People are addicted to Ford Derangement Syndrome. It makes them feel high and mighty.

The left is not outraged that Ford might be using hard drugs.

These are the people who think hard drug users are our better equals and should have free drugs and a plush place to inject them.

No, the bottom line is they don’t like that a fat, red-faced football coach with a working-class way about him is mayor. They don’t like that he’s not “people like us.” That’s all it’s ever been about.

And if he doesn't meet your particular definition of decorum he should be kicked out of his democratically-elected office? Do any of you actually believe in democracy? I'm starting to wonder...

The Lib/NDP coalition was a bit different, nobody was to be removed from office; all the existing MPs would have remained in their place, and the balance of power would remain relatively unchanged. I would have had no ethical problem with this.

I think the Ford situation is much different. His whole tenure has been a circus, and the idea of forcible removal seems tempting, but can't you see how dangerous that is? The councillors (or the Premier) should not have the right to remove a democratically elected mayor. The mere potential of partisan abuse is reason enough to let him stay. There are only two ways in which the mayor should be able to be removed, imo, and those are elections, and the criminal justice system. If neither casts him out, then who are the councillors to defy the will of the people? If this is not respected, Toronto will simply become another version of Egypt.

You guys have put up with Ford for a long time now. You have less than a year to go. You're not going to die. And if council really hates him, maybe they should vote against things they don't like rather than joining the circus, ranting and raving, and making feuds. I hope there's actually a good candidate for mayor who's willing to run. For now, though, I'm just glad I don't live there.

The best way to end this is to vote the guy out.
