Interesting, I hope they do something exciting with Rexall. It would be a shame to tear down such a big structure.

I think there's a certain benefit to having two big rinks in a market provided that it's big enough to sustain both of them. It's great for big events like WJC, Olympics/Commonwealth/PAG, etc. That setup seems to be working well in Vancouver. Rexall isn't exactly new, but it certainly isn't falling apart the way some of the older rinks like MLG and Winnipeg Arena were.

Yeah that is a good point. The guys here in Calgary are confident that when we get our new arena, they will keep the Saddledome for Stampede events among other things..

Says who? Very little chance that a City of 1.3M can support two 20k-ish seat arenas.

Very few cities of 1.3 million have exhibitions as large as the Stampede.
Btw, Calgary will be over 1.6 million by the time any new stadium is complete, we don't even have a proposal for one yet.

Yeah, I don't think a 10 day exhibition can justify keeping it.

Dollars to donuts, the prime acts that the Stampede brings in will prefer to perform in the new arena due to the vast improvements in acoustics and stage support that the Dome can't accommodate.

The Dome will be demolished and the Stampede board will redevelop the land and build something else there.

That's a shame because although I've heard the inside sucks the outside of the Saddledome is one of my favourite arenas out there. Awesome look to it.

Why wouldn't they convert the dome into a facility more suitable for the needs of the Stampede once the Flames move out? Cheaper than building something from scratch.

Exactly, and considering the new dome will likely be nowhere near the stampede grounds, they certainly won't be hosting events there.

The Stampede uses the Dome for 10 days a years for what? Concerts and maybe an exhibition event or two.

They're already expanding their exhibition space with the new building that just went up and have no need to maintain a property the size of the Saddledome (no matter how many seats they remove) for a little over a week a year. It makes far more sense to partner with the Flames during that time to use their new arena/stadium and share the booking/event profits.

The Saddledome will be taking up a huge space on the Stampede grounds once the Flames are gone, and the Stampede group can re-purpose that land to better suit their needs moving forward.

There would be times where it would be nice to have 2 large arena venues, but the reality is (same with Calgary IMO) that it would be only used a few times a year during very busy periods and not viable long term or short term for that matter. The EXPO grounds could use another expansion in a few years and so it might make sense to expand north to where Rexall and its parking is.

Those seats are going to feel like barcaloungers after this Guelph experience (which has been handled very well - much more than I expected)

- Work continues to put up the vertical beams in the Veil at the south stands.
- The new stair cases at the east and west end of the stands are being built.
- Inside the new south stands, team offices, locker rooms and mechanical rooms are being finished.
- At the north stands, the contractor has started work to build new concessions on the lower concourse.
- Seats continue to go in.
- The new roofing membrane is being installed over the stands.

The tower crane near the Bank Street Bridge provides a different perspective over the north stands and new urban village


Construction on the overall stadium continues below the tower crane in the southwest corner of the site


Seats continue to be installed, while above work to install the new roof membrane has begun


With new bleachers installed and work on the roof of the media box started, the south stands are taking shape

Edmonton is looking at a medium sized stadium, likely soccer focussed.
