Why is it taking them 3.5 years to build this thing? Seems quite slow to me, considering it is nothing that special we are talking about in here.

Probably tied to restoring the heritage building.
It would be far easier to demolish and built on a clean site, but working around the old structure will cause staging issues.

Those look phenomenal. The modernist in me is definitely quite excited.

What's up with the background though? I guess the portions of the surroundings are correct, but man it hardly resembles Vancouver at all. Amusingly the angle chosen on the last shot completely obscures Jameson house. Smartly done.

The more I see of this building, the more I like it.
For everyone that complained that we don't get enough 'pure' office towers like Calgary, this is it. A big honkin' brooding office tower that says Vancouver is open for business.

115 meters and 400 000 square feet isn't big when compared to towers in calgary. That being said, compared to other towers in the city, the square footage is significant, but not record-breaking. As far as design aesthetics, I'd give it a 7/10.

Seeing an office tower break the 500' level (600+ would be nice) and 500 000+ square feet would enter the comparable-to-calgary zone.

So very hard to call in terms of design. Some elements seem to want to work well, but many seem to scream awkward.

That's a fair assessment. I'd be inclined to be a little more generous, say 7.5/10.

I think it is going to come down to materiality. As we are starting to see with Eatons, really high quality materials can elevate a "meh" design. and they are hard to communicate with renderings.

I second the call about seeing materials in real life, but I REALLY like this design. To me it has a certain... assuredness to it. I like its austerity and restraint. I mean, I can see how people might not like it, but it just works for me. But I kind of feel like ambitious architecture should, if not be loved by all, at least be polarizing.

Also, I would love to see a render with it and Jameson together. I still think the curves and horizontal stacked horizontal lines of Jameson will be an interesting contrast with the boxiness and hard vertical lines of this building.

(Also, also, I kind of think artificial constraints make for some of the most interesting architecture in the city.)

Someone mentioned (in this thread, I think) some time ago, how this building reminded them of a filing cabinet, with the doors partially open. Since then thats all I can see when I see renders of this building.

For what its worth.
