Of course it is, but it didn't use the old division of land into long, narrow river plots like they did in Manitoba back 200-300 years ago, don't you know anything with a faux historic element gets eaten up here. Who exactly is on the panel that chose the horrific plan anyway, maybe that's an underlying problem right there.

River lots make perfect sense... if they were going to be occupied by subsistence farmers and their families eking out a living on the land.

Yeah after my initial look at the chosen conceptual proposal, this seems to be quite a marked improvement over the chosen winner...

I'll add the winning Arpent proposal so we can all pull out our hair some more, just to be fair Remeber to scroll sideways as well as up and down..lol

I would love to hear what Dr. Milgrom thinks about this proposal... I'm sure he loves it. I think he would love to see a bunch of Monoliths as he bikes into University.

these Modernist images could go with the winning proposal very easily.

^ It's interesting that he is involved in addressing

......."impediments to the production of age-friendly environments in Winnipeg. This includes those that are rooted in current planning practices – and specifically who is consulted in the preparation of plans – and those that are manifestations of historic urban development patterns – most specifically that of car-oriented sprawl in and around the city.

Although his Bio states he is Associate Dean (Research), Head and Associate Professor, Department of City Planning, He may have actually been involved in the selection process?

We should email him and find out what he thinks..

[email protected]

Did you study under him at the UM?

I'm pleasantly surprised by the SHED streetscaping on Donald Street so far. It's not bad... the lights are a nice touch. It is going to be maintenance intensive though, so if the city is less than fully committed to fixing damaged pieces, replacing burnt-out/damaged light fixtures, etc. it's going to start looking very ghetto in a hurry.

It's also nice to see that opening up some closed-off fortress-like buildings in the area (WCC and Cityplace) is also part of the plan.

(More pictures here: http://www.stantec.com/content/stantec/e...itality-entertainment-district-shed.html )

Of course, the SHED still hasn't done much to address the need for more variety and diversity in the streetscape, more density and more people. There is still only one condo project on the go in the SHED, and that just won't build any critical mass of people in the area.

I really wouldn't mind the long strips of field/forest if the buildings went all the way from the east to the west of the site. Put low or mid rise on either side of University Crescent to connect the towers and it wouldn't be so bad. While it is not the ideal solution, it would help connect the buildings, and still preserve the natural feel the is obviously so important to the university.

Also did any one else notice how any site that they didn't put a building on got filled with trees? It's like they thought "Guys is there anything else do we need to add?" "Uhh nope I think that's everything... Oh shoot no trees!" "Okay put some here, and here, oh forget it just put them everywhere"

And the pedestrian bridge would give me a 10 minute walk to class...

Not being an expert on this subject but the WCC render looks like complete fantasy.

1. The east-west skylink seems set further back from the corner than the useful floor space

2. Windows along Carlton with pedestrians out front seems to ignore the building is set back far from the street at that point to accommodate parkade access under the loading ramp seen in the picture.

3. The skylink to the new hotel feels like it is too far west based on the relative site sizes.

4. The thought of their being a restaurant on the second floor corner of the WCC seems laughable and undersized for being practical.

5. The event banners/display screens on St Marys seem like the first thing that will be cut.

6. The name is wrong.

Yes, it would be nice to see a reno like this but I think it is more likely to end up as a simple reskin like when MTS Centre was built.

That rendering of the convention centre has nothing to do with what is being built. It was an artists image of the shed.

Looks like the City's proposed growth-related infrastructure fee is being shot down by the Dippers.

Bad move. I was surprised to learn that a lot of the surrounding municipalities already have these types of fees/levies/taxes/whatever you want to call them. On what basis would they justify preventing Winnipeg from imposing one?
