I noticed the progress on the La Porte project too when I walked past a few days ago. When I saw it, the progress wasn't earth shattering, but it was at least noticeable. The steel hadn't risen any higher above the ground than where it has been for the last several months, but there were several additional pieces of steel and concrete that have been added to the structure.

Yeah, I usually check it out form the fifth or sixth floor of the Broadway parking garage, so as to see into the pit. I was out of the country for about ten days, so when I saw it again it was little surprising what they'd done. They're moving at a normal pace now, it seems.

About 111 South Main...

Am I the only person who's actually super bitter about the missed opportunity here?

I know that we have a "take what we get" mentality for our skyline, but I personally am peaved as all get-out here.

A tower is finally being built in the gap between tower clusters, and they're keeping it the same height and making another flat-roofed building. Something tall, pointy, and beautiful could be built instead and be a beautiful centerpiece for our city.

But it's not.

Is there a proper outlet to gripe about this to actually see something truly awe-inspiring go in its place? I'd rather have the space be empty and have a more unique skyline like we currently have than to just fill it with another flat-topped piece of infill.

I like the look of 111 S Main, but yes I wish we would break the glass ceiling of height.

Something I don't think we've considered on the forum yet. The towers being constructed in Downtown Metros are preferably class A. These days throughout the modern world it's often necessary to build a heliport on the top of a tower in order to give certain occupants that prestige and accomodation they demand. This is a given before placing their company within a major portion of space in the tower. While I like pointy tops, it's not going to be practicle on a lot of these future corporate towers in downtown Salt Lake.

I don't really think the lot where 111 is going is the best for a signature tower anyway. When a tower is built on the lot across the street to the west it will cover up 111 from that angle. I'd rather see a signature tower built there and I love the density that 111 will bring.

So I am in the process of writing a paper on Daniel Libeskind architectural style. I Really really wish we had him design something in Salt Lake. The Michael Lee-Chin Extension of the ROM is great as well as his Crystals at CityCenter, Las Vegas.

I am aware that some may pose the argument that his designs is a reproduction of itself, however, it is his signature style and we already have the Public Library which is the 2.0 version, if you will, of Moshe Safdie's Vancouver Library.

I WANT A CRYSTAL IN SALT LAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I respect your opinion I DO NOT want a crystal in Salt Lake City.

I too like the design of 111, and as far as a place to go to complain I'm not sure what you'd be looking for. It's not as if the city is the one designing it or has a book with design options that the developer has to follow. It's the developers money and because of that they get to design and build what they want, as long as things like height and setbacks are addressed. Would I like another pointy topped building? Sure, but I think flat roofs can give the city a unique look as well, particularly in areas such as the crown design and lighting of the crown, for instance 222's crown was light with orange this week for Halloween. While I do care about the overall design of the building and it's height, I am more into how it interacts at the pedestrian level, 111 seems to be designed to do this nicely.

New Marriott Courtyard Hotel south of ESA to be 10-stories?

Something interesting Stenar posted under the "Rumor Mill: New Hotel in Salt Lake City" thread about the new Marriott Hotel south of ESA that is under construction.

""Marriott Courtyard and a Hyatt Place Residence Inn
Construction has begun on the property just south of Energy Solutions Arena, facing 100 South and 300 West. Two hotels, a Marriott Courtyard and a Hyatt Place Residence Inn, will be constructed in the area that once contained an unused warehouse and a parking lot. The first phase will be the 10 story Marriott Courtyard Hotel.

Source: Bill Knowles, Construction Mitigation Ombudsman"

from the Downtown Alliance newsletter"

In the past this hotel was reported to be either five or six stories. There was a rendering once ( can't find it now. ) that showed a five-ish story stucco looking hotel. But if this is true and that if somewhere down the line the plans have changed, then having a 10-story hotel instead of a five story hotel is great news. Can't find any renderings. But just thought I would share the news.

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for getting on top of or high up in buildings along main. I was walking around in the alley behind the Walker Center that parallels Main and terminates behind O'Shucks, before turning and emptying out onto Regent St.

But what I really wanted to do was see this area from above. Any suggestions for buildings that might have public access on the east side of main? Anyone know of ways to look down into this alley?

Some of the buildings back there seem to be mid block add-ons, or totally separate from the buildings that front Main and it looks like there's many layers of history there. I thought it would be cool to see, especially because it will probably change a lot with the PAC/tower.

That is great news, and quite a jump in height. Something of that height for that particular brand shows that Salt Lake's CBD is really advancing quickly. Usually I think that height for that brand would be more typical of say Denver. Nothing bugs me more than when at this stage of Salt Lake's buildup, someone proposes a surburban style hotel for Salt Lake's CBD.

It looks like the apartments that will go in on the old Kiwanis lot on 900 East and about 440 South are moving forward. They are going before the planning commission on the 13th. Here is the summary from the meeting agenda:

Eco Lofts Apartments at approximately 440 South 900 East - Jeff Lonardo of Method-Studio Architects, representing Salt Lake City Housing Authority, requests approval from the city to develop a mixed use (retail / residential) 74-unit apartment project located at the above address. The proposed building would be located further from the street than is required. Currently the land is occupied by the vacant old Kiwanis Club community center building, and the property is zoned TSA-UN-C (Transit Station Area Urban Neighborhood Core). This type of project must be reviewed as a Planned Development. The subject property is within Council District 4 represented by Luke Garrott. (Staff contact: Casey Stewart at (801) 535-6260 or [email protected]. Case number PLNSUB2013-00528).

Thanks Stayinformed and H4 for finding that news and digging up the renderings. That's an attractive building, finished in quality materials. I was wondering about the street engagement, since you had mentioned the request to locate further from the street. Seems to be a fairly good placement though for that 900 E. location, (off about a half a block from 400 S, not right on 400 S). I especially like having that space along 900 E. for the sidewalk dining. Also, like the roof terrace and second floor terrace features. There seems to be ample parking under the building, and not too much surface parking at the side. What do you guys think about it for that particular plot? That area certainly needs more density. Great location for those who will live there.

I've been looking at the plans for the 'Union Station Courtyard Marriott' and I'm pretty sure it is only 6 stories. It bids out in November. These are preliminary architectural drawings but I doubt it changes much from this.

I heard this morning on an ad by Kevin Paulsen that he not only opposes 11th East Streetcar, but also the entire UPAC project.

I was shocked. I heard his ads on the radio before, but never his stance on the UPAC until this morning.

Today is election day folks, get out and vote FOR the BEST candidate—especially if you live in SLC.

You're kidding, what a narrow so and so. He probably would have opposed the Salt Palace too. Some people seriously can't see the forrest for the trees.
