As for the Drexel hotel at 33rd & Chestnut, they are building that as a smaller - boutique if you will - concept that is indeed needed for campus (and for W.Phila for that matter), but with future intentions for a larger, convention-oriented property next to 30th street.

It probably will be tied up in court for years. Second, Philadelphia does not have the job growth to support a lot of new office buildings and there is plenty of other desirable space to build on. I agree it is a gateway from 30th street station and one day it will be able to support offices or mixed use development. Also, one of the family members wants a large memorial park where the Salvation Army was at 22nd and Market and we all would be hard pressed to deny them this taking into account their losses.
A memorial park? There is already enough park/plaza space in the area. A placard or some sort of sidewalk item should be sufficient enough. I don't think you need to line the area with office high-rises just now. Small, temporary retail structures would fit well till when (and probably soon) taller structures could be built.

I think they're great as well. I feel like when things are too traditional people bitch and when they go too avant garde people still bitch. No pleasing some of these folks.

I was actually talking to a papa johns dude in the elevator. He said they closed their location and relocated. Said they want to build office towers and stuff. Obviously not some awesome source, but they didn't close, they relocated.

As for a memorial park, no thanks. Put a plaque up just like for the firemen that died fighting one meridian. Hopefully we'll see that side of market built up as it sorely needs it.

From an Inquirer article from 12/26/12:

A city fire station stands at 2110 Market. Basciano hopes that will move, but Greenberger says it is staying.

"That is an important fire station. I don't expect it to be going anywhere," Greenberger said. He added, however, that he believed the station could be incorporated into any development.

It's fine if the fire station stays. There have been highrises built before that protrude out over lowrises. It can be incorporated into any development and have highrises built next to it on both side. Everything else in between 21st and 23rd on the south side of Market Street can be demo'd.

Interesting that this rendering shows multiple small retail spaces. If they were courting Trader Joe's, wouldn't the rendering show one large space and a generic "Grocery Store" sign? I am really, really hoping for a TJs in that space as my wife works nearby. TJs + RTM = heaven.

Also, I recall reading that article that Aaamazarite posted. A bit disappointing coming from the city's chief of economic development! While I agree it can be incorporated into a development, a firehouse on the ground floor really limits what one can do. Anything with residential or hotel brings up noise concerns. The neighborhood is sketchy as it is. I'm sure that they get around these things in NY but NY is a very different animal from Philadelphia or nearly every other city in the country.

Finally, this thread has really been heating up for the last few weeks - supposed Liberty/Comcast tower, Cira South, Dranoff towers, and now a potential 500 unit building. Philly IX will be here before we know it!

Philadelphia Homicides

Just an update to previous posts. Thus far, Philadelphia homicides stand at 210 since January 1, 2013. This compares with 286 for the respective range last year and 340 for the relevant period in 2007. Down 38%. Let's hope this trend holds.

That I highly doubt. But still a great year.

The city should be touting these numbers. While it's never good to brag that 210 people were murdered in your city, it couldn't hurt to see those posters in the suburbs touting a 38% drop. Whether we like it or not, many suburbanites still think Philadelphia (including center city) is what it was in the late 80s/early 90s.

What's the murder rate in Center City? That's what tourists and potential residents should be focusing on.

To give a little insight on whats being done to prevent murders: This past year there has been an on-going initiative to curb the gang violence in Sotuh/Southwest Philly. Police has gathered the names of many gang members "corner boys", in attempt to get through to them. The "corner boys" are the ones that exchange the gun fire. The police brought them in a spoke to them along with community influences.

It seems to be having some short term success, whether it can last really depends on the dedication of the community influences and the police having a visible presence.

I have to imagine that if this is truly having success, that it can be rolled out in other troubled area's where gang related gun violence is excessive.

More on that here (for those who didn't see it in yesterday's Inquirer):

It's very low. However, crime in center city - flashmobs, robberies, and murders, get a disproportionate amount of attention. Whether it's because of the color of the victim's skin, the randomness of the crime, or the fact it occurred in an area "perceived" as safe is an argument that anyone can make (and probably not appropriate for this forum).

And the suburbanites who think CC is dangerous, you'll never convince them no matter what. We've all read the comments on Philly.com. These people cannot be reasoned with.

Expansion of the North Broad Rodeph Shalom Synagogue has been approved. Now the parking lot behind the building just needs to be filled in

Maybe they can do something similar to the Episcopal church in University City and build an apartment building for profit of the Synagogue.

RE: 117 Spring Garden

Summer first let me thank you for all of your posts on here. However, I would have to say that 117 Spring Garden is a little painful to look at; ouch!

The NIMBY's were out in full force pm this project. They can not let anything of any height be built. They were complaining about shadows.

I hope there is some decks, balconies or patio's. Waterfront projects should have that connection to the outside, IMO.
