What difference does it make if the building is 52 or 57 floors? I mean, from NIMBYs' perspective? Naturaly for us SSPers it is a great deal!

It is partially due to costs. The higher you go the costs increase exponentially, not proportionately. I think they may try to squeeze the same number of units in the 48 floors as they would have had in the original 57.

It was to cut costs, not because of complaints.

After the success of phase 1, they probably realized they could make the taller buildings shorter and still achieve the same sales.

Unlike Downtown Vancouver, buyers in Burnaby probably aren't willing to pay that much of a view premium to be on the top floors...

The taller buildings in the renderings look good for marketing purposes and more dramatic than 30-40 storey buildings would've. (not that I'm implying they didn't actually plan on building the 50+ storey towers). Still, I bet they don't change the renderings on their website.

Well that's boring, as this will make less of an impact to the local skyline. Having different height towers makes for a more interesting skyline and for once they would have been allowed to go higher.

Sales for 2nd phase

Does anyone know when they will start phase 2 sales? When phase 1 sold out quickly, it was anticipated that Fall 2013 would be phase 2. However we are almost into winter and still no updates. It doesn't seem like the condo market slowdown is the reason there's no news is it?

Winter doesn't start for another 7 weeks, so we might see them announce something still in Fall 2013.

With the rapidly dropping temperatures around here and the snow on the mountains, they might do something sooner.

On a more serious note, there will be a public hearing for the rezoning application for phase 2 on Nov 26th, so sometime after then:

Nice. (apart from Sovereign)

Good to see high ceilings in the retail space (unless that's a lobby).

That really 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 about them not going through with the 57 storey tower but I guess with all the other recent tall towers around metrotown Ill let it slide.

Compare this old pic with the Jan 4 pics by Yellow Fever at SSC:

I wonder why they needed to demolish the whole upper level retail structure?

They re did it so that they get higher ceilings.

Higher Ceilings = Stadium style movie Theater

Could be to fix structural issue in the old building. I remembered 1 or 2 steel beams were erected outside the old eye glass shop to hold up the ceiling. Now some vertical support columns have been reinforced. Also the new steel beams seem to have larger diameter.
The 2nd floor above old Future Shop location was custom built for the theatre so the floor was not horizontal. Now they are preparing to make it level.

Interesting, thanks.
Thought a competitor might set up next door (SilverCity is a zoo)

I think with Brentwood and Marine Gateway getting brand new theatres, in addition to New West Landmark, will lessen the pressure on Silvercity Metrotown in the future.

What's up with that giant blank concrete wall facing the Metrotown Kingsway Parkinglot

Metropolis' surface parking lots facing Kingsway will eventually be built up with office towers, so it'll 🞵🞵🞵🞵 up to another wall - eventually.
That does look like a narrow sidewalk on Kingsway though.

This doesn't seem to match up with their model though, as you can see in the picture below there is supposed to be a smaller side-road beside that metropolis back alley road.. So either this is going to be a large standalone concrete wall between these two roads or this blank concrete wall is on the far side of the proposed road and will always be visible?? Unless they are deviating from the plans..
