NE a walk in the park compared to Beltline, claims resident who should know ...

http://www.calgaryherald.com/Safety+concern+residents+Ward/9035167/story.html

Quote:
As someone who used to live in Marlborough, Ian Krell has heard all kinds of jokes about the city’s supposedly rough northeast neighbourhoods.

Krell now lives just steps away from the bars and restaurants that make 17th Avenue S.W. such a magnet for Calgarians, yet the 27-year-old said living in the area has a down side.

“You get a lot of rowdy drunk people — and some of them are aggressive and yelling at you,” he said.

For all its charms, Krell said the area doesn’t seem as safe to him as the much-maligned east side.

“I go back (to the northeast) and feel a lot safer walking around at night,” he said.
Interestingly, people get most worried after the suburbanites leave for home:

Quote:
For others, nighttime crowds aren’t the problem — it’s a lack of people once suburbanites who work in the area head home for the day.

Mikaela Pydee said she often feels uncomfortable while walking at night near her home on the Beltline’s western edge.
And then the usual ...

Quote:
However, the concentration of agencies in the core that serve the homeless means they’re often out on the streets even when others aren’t.

“It’s a presence that can make you uncomfortable,” she said.

Pydee, 27, stressed she’s never been assaulted, but worries about the possibility when encountering someone who’s intoxicated or agitated.

“It’s a question mark,” she said.

Cool video of downtown Calgary from HAWCS. I like the flash when they go past EAP and when they zoom in on the roof of the Bow.

Other than it being suburia who posted this article, what's wrong with it? Are we to censor anything that might be remotely negative about Calgary?

He's not negative about Calgary, just the inner city. He always paints the inner city/downtown as some derelict, awful, crime ridden place. Look at the points he bolded and tell me in all honesty that he's not doing so.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread, just gets frustrating. I've put him on block, so this won't be an issue from me moving forward.

I never said he was being censored, I axed if we are expected to refrain from posting anything that might be remotely critical about Calgary.

I know he is and it is annoying when he post articles about an inner city incident, but tends to ignore the numerous violent crimes that happen in the burbs.

The article he linked to in his last post had some valid points. It was also poorly written and a bit sensationalist but I think I agree that the number of drinking establishments in the Beltline whilst vibrancy also introduce other issues. Such as loud drunken idiots.

I think one solution would be to decriminalize pot and only allow smoking lounges to open after 11pm. Nothing makes for an early night like pounding back 4 or 6 pints, followed by a few righteous bong rips.

Looks like a young kid was beaten to death in the beltline last night.

calgary sun tweet:
"18-y-o man dead after overnight assault at 10 Ave @ 2 St SW."

Murder charge against mother - 10 year old dead as a result:

http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/tamara-lovett-...eath-of-her-seven-year-old-son-1.1557197

Quote:
44-year-old Tamara Sophia Lovett is facing charges of criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life in connection to the death of her son, seven-year-old Ryan Lovett.

According to police, Ryan, who lived with his mother in an apartment suite in the 900 block of 17 Ave. S.W., contracted a strep infection in February of this year. Tamara is alleged to have provided her son with holistic remedies instead of seeking medical treatment for the infection.

He was stabbed, not beaten to death, and it was in the midst of a fight. This wasn't what you make it sound like, as if he was randomly attached.

Looks like more info is out now. I was translating the media's tweet, with assault in my mind more likely meaning beating (they usually do say stabbing when it is a ... stabbing).

I don't understand your comment about someone making it sound like a random attack. Are you suggesting it was a hit / premeditated?

Anyway, we shouldn't minimize the loss of a young man's life. It is a big deal.

Random attacks are akin to acts of terrorism. Two guys getting into a bar fight with one getting stabbed to death is not like this. Randomness is what makes the rest of us live in fear. Bar fights do not.

When I originally posted, there were only tweets to go by. No one mentioned two guys getting into a bar fight, and at the same time, no one mentioned random attack (other than you). Reality of the matter is that people are murdered and you make it out like a game. An opportunity to joust on the forum. That is a real shame.

Here's the latest ...

Friends have confimed the deceased man is Austin Lukas Strasser-Hird.

According to witnesses, Strasser-Hird’s injuries were the result of a chaotic scene in the alleyway, with as many as twenty people surrounding the victim. Members of the group kicked, punched, stomped and stabbed the man.

<snip>

Police say the beating was severe and detectives are attempting to piece together who was involved in the attack and at what point the victim suffered the fatal blows. Officers say the attack may not have been the only altercation the victim was involved in overnight.
I don't actually read anything about a bar, though I suspect there is a possibility Rusty's speculations might be correct. That being said, I point out that his statement that this was "two guys getting into a bar fight" is absolutely false. The media coverage of the police statements confirm a virtual mob beating this guy down while stabbing him to death.
