Was in Mount Pearl today and work is well underway on the new Swiss Chalet in the Pearlgate strip mall right next to Dominion. At least they have an official sign posted at the construction site with the Swiss Chalet logo on it coming soon.

Is it where Westside Charlies used to be? Or is that still there?

Agreed. It could be them trying to sway the public knowledge one way so it's a bigger deal when the pf changs logo goes up and more people will talk about it. Good PR.

But, given how reluctant they were the past year to actually admit that pf changs was coming, yet they were more then willing to comment on the legros and mottis restaurant leads me to believe pf changs was tentative and in the balance the whole time.

Jack Astors isn't bad but it's a huge downgrade from pf changs.

Pretty sure its in the west side charlies space. I was driving by and it was really dark so not completely sure. But its in that same strip.

At least Jack Astor's is better than Montana's, BP, etc. It's probably on par with Moxie's. If any chain would perfectly fit in downtown, it'd be Earls though. It's probably the best chain restaurant I've eaten at. Dem fish tacos...

Well in my opinion, Jack Astor's is popular enough (whether you like it or not) to pay for the cost of the the new building on Harbour Drive. Nothing against it but I have never heard of Earl's though. Looks like it's mainly a west coast franchise. Nothing east of Ontario and only a handful of locations in Ontario at that. Looks like a nice place though from the pics. Like the industrial design interior shots of it. I am sure Legros and Motti will do well too. The website looks pretty awesome.

I know a lot of people hate Taco Bell but I love it. I have fell in love with it during my last few trips to the U S of A. I also know that it wouldn't even taste the same if it were here in NL....anyways I see on the Taco Bell fb group that it's possibly rumoured to be setting up in CBS. Can anybody confirm or shed some light on this?

The ppl who own the rights to KFC in St. John's also own (some of) the KFC/Taco Bell's in Nova Scotia. I forget the name of the firm, but suffice to say that if we do see standalone KFC's in St. John's again, they will include Taco Bell's.

Also, a friend was in NS at Taco Bell and mentioned to the clerk that he was from NL and an older gentleman (franchise owner as it turned out) piped up from "out back" and said he was opening two taco bell/kfc's in NL in 2014.

Take that for what you will.

IMO, we'll see Taco Bell's here soon. This company from what I've heard is not in the business of operating KFC's by themselves as standalone stores, instead merging them with Taco Bell's and keeping overhead costs down.

CBS? Seems like an odd location for that. I would imagine if any location would be viable for Taco Bell it would be in St. John's where the population is larger. Though the Taco Bell at Empire Cinemas at Avalon Mall didn't do so well and closed eventually. Once KFC gets it act together and opens up new KFC locations throughout the city, the best bet is to have a KFC/Taco Bell combo store like in other cities as they are owned by the same parent company. At least that way they will be assured of the customer traffic into the store. NFLDers love their KFC.

The reason, I believe, the Taco Bell in the cinemas closed down was because of how out of the way it was. It was really only accessible to people going to see movies, most of which aren't in the mood for tacos anyway. Nobody would think of stopping into the theaters to grab a fast food lunch on their way home from work, even most regular Avalon mall shoppers wouldn't think of going into empire theaters to get a bite to eat. They'd likely choose from whatever was in the food court. I wouldn't judge the future of Taco Bell in the city by the failure of an out of the way, inaccessible location. I think they'd do great here

That is a very good point. It was really out of the way and I am sure lots of people didn't even know it was there unless they went to movies.
I sill feel somehow though that St. John's is not really a Taco Bell kind of town so if they were to come here, so a KFC/Taco Bell combo store would probably be the wise way to go.

To tell the truth, I don't think there are many stand-alone Taco Bells out there, at least not from what I've seen. I'd say if they were to come here it'd only be a KFC/Taco Bell combo. While I'm on the same thought, I heard that the new KFC in Gander will be a KFC/Pizza Hut combo. So it looks as if the new owner/operators are interested in bringing the combo restaurants to the island.
