That is correct. The "unoccupied" notion is completely false and pure guesswork. The majority of buildings even those downtown are occupied. Maybe not by owners but at least by renters. Are there some unoccupied units? Absolutely. But it is a minority.

update on the "renovations".. looks like they are only leaving a couple of walls and the floor from the old structure.

They are now working on the 2nd level basement on the first tower.

There is even less left of the south building complex now.
I wonder if they will take the portion between the Grand Corniche towers and the Holiday Inn down to ground level?

If they do, that's where the connecting road (Silver Ave?) is supposed to run.
Maybe they negotiated with the City to accelerate that phase?

That is a great idea, not sure.

Maybe they are 'just' gutting everything back to the first level concrete slab between Grand Corniche and the Hotel, and between the Hotel and the lane. I'm very surprised they can do that to a building at all.

I walked by the site today and found Station Square Dental and Save-On-Foods Pharmacy are basically behind fences.
There is still an opening besides the hotel entrance and it seems the stores are still in business. But the fence is quite an obstacle for customers to walk around.

My pics from today.
The rebar from Station Square I is now reaching above grade! The southern building is even more gutted, now even below grade near the tunnel to Metropolis.

I am still surprised how shallow hole they dug for the first tower. One would think that 5 towers this tall would require a huge and deep parkade, but based on the first tower that doesn't seem to be the case. I wonder if any of the new retail will have it's own parking?

I visited the site today (photos coming) and there wasn't much progress from the photos from end of July. They are approaching the surface, but it will take long before this building will start to make it's mark on the skyline.

They've moved the covered walkway along Kingsway into the road are excavating the sidewalk area:

Only one more level until this tower is above grade:

A look at the demolition on the other side of Station Square:

Looks like some bad news for this development - According to the Burnaby Council Agenda (page 35) for tonight, Station Square phase II is starting the rezoning process, but is being downsized from the original 57 and 35 storey towers to 48 and 38 storey towers. This means the tallest building in the development will be 52 storeys in phase IV (unless they eventually change that too).

That is sad to hear. Any reason given for the big decrease in height in one tower?

Probably in response to the complaints from people living in the nearby slums. http://www.burnabynow.com/news/sky-is-not-the-limit-for-city-buildings-1.409749
