New images are always added to this index before they appear in the gallery. Not really sure why, though.

Most people on this forum, it would appear, prefer the black towers black.
I don't, and I sincerely wish they could be reclad in something lighter, brighter, and more upbeat, be the cladding reflective (my preference) or not.

God the lack of the Eatons Center really changes the skyline. Every other photo I know of downtown has it sticking out.

Recladding the black modernist towers to be more "current"
- is the same as one of the reasons the Birks Building was demolished and cornices disappeared en mass during the 1950s...

For what reason? By the way, they're actually brown, not black.

Exactly. There are more than enough "current" towers in Vancouver; we need to respect and preserve our architectural heritage. Besides, we need darker towers to anchor the financial district.

The variation and contrast in colour and building material texture (glass, steel, stone, concrete, wood) defiinitely create a more interesting cityscape.

Different styles and materials create a "layering" effect and add depth to the cityscape, which is why cities like New York look so interesting.

This kind of contrast is why I didn't mind the original Eaton's building much (at least in its cleaner days, and sans the additional two floors which deviated from the original design). The huge, white horizontal slab set directly against the huge, brown vertical slab of the TD Tower was very interesting indeed (and no doubt intentional).
