Here's a bit of small news. The city has made application to demolish all of the buildings on the corner of 100 S. and Main to accomodate the construction of the UPAC. Demolition should begin in a few weeks.

When the CCH is built on the north side of that section of 200 S (I'm still that Royal Wood Plaza will be the site of the CCH) I would love to see another hotel, and a residential tower built on the south side of the street. Either a hotel or residential tower something in the 20-30 story range (something tall and slender sort of like the Cascade) would look really great on the SW corner of the 200/200 intersection and a 15-25 story hotel or residential building just to the west of that as well.

I wouldn't really consider that small news. That's huge news IMO.

Yes, Vosen's new place is on the ground floor of the Westgate Lofts. It looked like a space next to them was being prepped for construction too; not sure what's going in, or if they were just cleaning it up.

Nu Skin convention brings crowds, economic boost to Utah

By Jason Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/86558...rings-crowds-economic-boost-to-Utah.html

Women from Korea take a "selfie" during a break from the Nu Skin Global Convention at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013. This week, the convention will bring about 15,000 attendees from around the world to Salt Lake City, pumping in an estimated $14 million into Utahs economy in just four days. It is second in size only to the Outdoor Retailer market and is the largest convention in the state from a local business. Laura Seitz, Deseret News

...Stinson said Salt Lake City has hosted 16 direct marketing conventions this year, all but two of which have been Utah-based companies. The total economic impact of those events has been more than $57 million, he said...

On Wednesday, Nu Skin announced the opening of its $100 million Innovation Center and expanded U.S. headquarters in downtown Provo.

Designed by Seattle-based architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the expanded U.S. headquarters campus includes more than 300,000 total square feet with amenities such research laboratories, a state-of-the-art data center, office and meeting space, a gym, dining facilities, an auditorium, an indoor fountain and an atrium.

According to Nu Skin Chief Financial Officer Ritch Wood, the company currently employs more than 5,500 people worldwide, with about 1,300 workers in Utah — 900 at the new headquarters. He said the company hopes to increase its workforce by 10 percent by next year.

Over the past three years, sales revenues for Nu Skin have grown from $1.5 billion to nearly $3 billion, Wood said. The company's global sales goal for 2020 is $10 billion, he said.

Wood noted that the company is already at 90 percent capacity at its new facility and could be in line to expand even further in two years.

The company also announced that its new Greater China regional headquarters and Innovation Park in Shanghai is expected to be completed by the end of the year...

The thing that amazes me about all those Nu Skin tourists is how many seem to be going to the gateway. Every time I step outside of my office there seem to be hordes of people walking there. I wouldn't have guess that that would happen.

I wonder if they know it better, from their previous conventions here?

Considering it is at both the Salt Palace and ESA, I'm sure those coming out of ESA looking to eat, shop or just walk around are choosing Gateway, because of it's proximity. I'd guess the majority of those leaving the Salt Palace to do the same thing are probably going to City Creek.

Now just imagine when the CCH is built on 200 S on the RWP site with the hotel entrance on 200 S. That will help retail on 200 S and bring even more to that on 200 W. The more I think about it, the more I think the the CCH hotel in the RWP site will be the catalyst to connect 200 S from 200 E to 400 W. There are some small vacant spots between 3rd and 4th and Main and 2nd but the block between 2nd and 3rd is really the only big hole in the corridor. The additional of hotel and residential I mentioned yesterday on the South Side of the Street, combined with the Downtown Street Car and 2nd South is the best E/W corridor.

I don't think they're just at the Gateway... I think they're just everywhere! I couldn't even move around in Harmon's today. It was so packed with people wearing the little passes.

Great reviews on this place. Anyone been to their new Downtown location yet?

Park City grads open Spitz in Salt Lake City

Spitz is now open at 35 E. Broadway in Salt Lake City. Photo courtesy of Spitz SLC.

Josh Hill and Tanner Slizeski opened Spitz in Salt Lake City on Monday, Oct. 21. Hill and Slizeski, along with Bryce Rademan, have now expanded the Spitz franchise to Utah from California. There are four locations in Los Angeles, and Rademan, Hill and Slizeski opened the first one in 2006. The three of them are graduates of Park City High School, class of 2001.

Here's a photo of to be constructed towers in LA posted by Architecture Buff on the 8th and Main thread. Look at this. LOOK AT IT. Isn't this amazing? Cut it down to 600 ft. and it's the best tower in SLC. Great for the Plaza hotel spot or the WPR spot. We probably have to wait ten years to get something like this.... but i just wanted you all to be amazed.

I'd happily take the one on the left CCH as well, or the City Creek Harmons Tower.

Lunch central

I think last week was their soft opening. When I walked by at lunch Thursday the line was out the door so I decided to wait for things to calm a bit.

If you want to track new restaurant openings the best list I have found is the "recent restaurants" on the bottom of the left sidebar at www.urbanspoon.com Salt Lake page. The prominent "Talk of the town" shows places which have recently reached a critical mass of reviews from critics, bloggers and Urbanspoon contributors. Right now the top three there are all downtown : Bodega, Bistro 222, R&R barbecue. Yelpers are also quick to notice new things but since the site covers all sorts of businesses i find it harder to use as a restaurant guide.

The number of lunch spots now between 100 and 300 South and West Temple to State is probably a good indication of the density of workers in this central area. Their limited hours do mean the streets are not as lively as we would wish in the evening, however, a few of them ,like this new doner kebab place, are angling for the evening crew..Spitz is open till 10 mon-th , midnight fri-sat and serves alcohol. http://www.spitzslc.com

Here let me promote a very good lunch and pre-theatre place which deserves more patrons: Olive Bistro opposite Capitol Theatre (this is NOT the Olive Garden just west of it)

The La Prote project has some good progress over the weekend. They have dismantled the mobile crane that was being used to build the parking garages.

This will allow for the steel structure to rise above ground. I would imagine that a more permanent tower crane will rise from the site in the near future.

Haven't been by there lately, but you'll saying that all underground work is finish and this development is finally to street level? If so that's great news. Hopefully the building up will happen soon.

I've been keeping up with the 111 SM blog lately. No new news, but the project surprisingly has been getting some national attention. Check it out.
