New Flyer expands into new building in Transcona

New Flyer Industries is expanding its Transcona campus with the consolidation of its aftermarket parts business along with new product development.

The company will move those operations into about 100,000 square feet of space across the street from its production headquarters.

The new location will be home for the bus company's aftermarket parts business which now generates about $250 million annually.

The company has been operating its parts and product development divisions at another location in the city.

About 30 new jobs will be created at the new facility which will also include publications and customer training operations.

World Trade Centre reaching out internationally

Six months after the formation of World Trade Centre Winnipeg, the new Winnipeg branch of the global trade organization has been used to extend feelers on behalf of Winnipeg companies to Brazil, the Netherlands, Turkey and the Philippines.

Mulaire said it is hoped that a downtown Winnipeg location that is fitting to house the WTC and host international delegations and dignitaries will be announced early in the new year.

WINNIPEG is on a smart-city run.

For the fourth year in a row, Manitoba's capital has been named to the Intelligent Community Forum's (ICF) list of the world's top 21 smart cities.

Winnipeg's submission showcased the city's cultural landscape in three complementary capacities: culture as art and craftwork, culture as heritage and culture as attitude. Local features and institutions highlighted included the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Exchange District, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, the Composites Innovation Centre and the University of Winnipeg's Cisco Centre for Collaboration Technologies.

Yeah. Thunder Bay is ranked higher than us!!!! BS!. They blamed high taxes in Manitoba for falling nearly off this chart. I don't understand why governments think raising taxes is a good thing. If business and people paid less taxes, then that means more money in their wallets. More money in ones' wallet means they will spend more in the economy. It's not rocket science! Is it any wonder why so many flee West???

Yeah. It doesn't seem that the list is as doom and gloom as it was made out to be. Those three cities seem to be doing just fine, relatively speaking.

you don't see the hq. of new flyer expanding into a 100,000 sqft building in grande prairie.. Canadian tire opening their app. centre out of Shawinigan or cabella's Canadian hq. choosing to operate out of Bathurst.. Winnipeg is doing fine despite this list.

Denver picks New Flyer

New Flyer Industries has been awarded its first-ever contract to build buses for the Regional Transportation District (RTD) in Denver, Colo.

The contract contains a firm order for 52 60-foot diesel buses using New Flyer's standard Xcelsior platform, 12 of which will be built using its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) styling. The contract contains up to 140 options that may be awarded at a later date, with the option to build buses of diesel-hybrid, compressed natural gas or clean-diesel propulsion.

All the orders are for 60-foot transit buses. Including the options, it would be a total of 384 equivalent units (EUs). (A 60-foot bus is worth two EUs)

Ottawa announces $100-M fund for start-ups

The federal government has announced a $100-million fund for small business start-ups in Winnipeg this morning.

The repayable funds of up to $3.5 million per company are intended to target the critical period to take a company from the research and development phase to commercialization.

Companies with fewer than 500 employees are eligible.
Applications are being accepted from November 9 to December 8.

Big stake for Ont. developer
Wants rural investments, not just urban

A Mississauga-based developer is sinking some deep roots in Manitoba, with plans to open a regional headquarters here and to spend up to half a billion dollars over the next 10 years on new commercial developments in the province.

The bulk of the projects will involve the development of new hotels, condominium complexes and apartment blocks in Winnipeg and rural centres.

The new regional office for the Prairies -- the company is also looking to expand into the Saskatchewan and Alberta markets -- will be housed in a new three-storey, 9,000-square-foot building to be built adjacent to the Berry Street hotel. The hope is to have the building completed by the fall of next year.

The regional office will be housed on the top floor of the building, and the plan is to open a Turkish spa on the second floor and a brand-name restaurant on the ground floor.

MTS expanding WiFi services at arenas, rec centres

MTS announced this morning it is expanding its WiFi hotspot services to civic arenas and recreation centres.

At a news conference at the Jonathan Toews Community Centre this morning, MTS president Kelvin Shepherd said the hotspot service now at civic libraries and the Pan Am pool will be expanded to civic arenas and community centres.

Access to the hotspots will be free to MTS customers who already have high-speed Internet or wireless services. Non-MTS customers will pay for access.
