Interesting that Hamilton's stands are made of steel while Ottawa's are made of concrete. Anyone know why one would use steel and the other concrete?

Hamilton is the steel city. It was always going to be steel. It's sort of how when you live in Oshawa, you buy GM.

It's more so to do with costs. Concrete has always been the preferred base material in stadium construction. The one ones whom don't use concrete are cheaper stadiums you would see in high schools and colleges. You use steel when your cheaping out.

Hamilton is getting what it's paying for with that new field.

I don't know how true that is, re base material anymore.

Steel is likely more inexpensive but this isn't like it was 80 years ago when steel was more expensive than concrete, and labour was cheap. Now stadiums aren't meant to last for 50 years. Not because of the integrity of the structure but because of changing public tastes and growth.

The new Soldier Field for example: Stadium seats are supported on precast concrete risers that span between and are supported by the main structural steel rakers that are supported at 40 feet centers.

I also don't see how this affects the fan experience. If there is an attractive exterior shell to the structure no one should be none the wiser whether it's concrete or steel and it shouldn't matter. People just wanna have something to bitch about.

On the Ottawa stadium thread they're still bitching about the bid process and don't even mention the stadium.

I wouldn't say that....If you look at the new 49ers, Levi's Stadium, which is pegged at $1.2B, it was almost all steel

City of Ottawa
October 18, 2013

- Work this week at the south side stands focused on installing the precast concrete risers that the seats will be mounted on at the second and third level.
- Inside the south stands, the offices, locker rooms and other spaces at the lower levels are being finished.
- Construction of the Veil, the iconic wooden surround, is expected to begin as early as next week.
- At the north stands, seat installation continues as the red and grey seats continue to go in.
- Inside the arena, repairs to the roof have started.

The south stands are coming together as the precast concrete bleachers the seats will be attached to go in and the new stair well is built

At the back of the new stands, new walls are filled in and exterior sheathing is installed

Seats in the north stands continue to be installed, while work on the new roof is on going

At the top level of the south stands, the new precast concrete bleachers are installed

Lots of activity continues across the stadium as underground conduit for audio-visual cables is run, the parking garage at the west end of the field is finished and work on the stands continues

Wow, I would like to see your high school. This is an NFL stadium in one of the richest, most sophisticated, high-tech areas in the world. I am sure the stadium will be first class and not "high school". Who says a stadium has to be poured concrete to be top level anyway?

My point exactly.

The north stand at ol' Frank Clair doesn't look top level to me. Is it just me or does anyone else find that black and red seat colour scheme not very appealing. Obviously I understand the idea, but to me it doesn't seem to look that good (the colours), from afar it looks more rose and gray and kinda ugly. Maybe it will look better as a whole when finished. Just my opinion.

You know THF (The Coffee Grounds) had to be steel because it's Hamilton, wouldn't be right otherwise. I would be shocked if Heinz Field in Pittsburgh was not steel frame as well.

Things are looking good, exciting times but I'll be surprised if THF is ready for the start of the Ti-Cats 2014 season. It will be fun watching them try though.

Bear in mind that what Hamilton is "paying for" is actually being contracted by the Pan Am games via Infrastructure Ontario. The city is just contributing a share of the costs and really didn't have much say in the winning bid to build the stadium (which was also bundled with the York U. stadium and the Milton velodrome).

That said, I don't think the use of steel vs. concrete has anything to do with cheaping out, nor do I think it has anything to do with Hamilton's "steel city" status as others have mentioned. It's just the design that was chosen.

Lots of buildings have a steel structure, and lots have a concrete structure. In the end, it really doesn't matter so long as the purpose of the building is met.

I'd just like to say one thing if anyone is wondering why I post full articles and photos. Yes, I know I could save space and post a link but the idea here is to save the history. News sites are notorious for changing their structure and the links become useless. The Ottawa pages related to the stadium construction have little reason to stick around when the stadium is completed and the Hamilton photos are stolen from the webcam which is temporary as well.

So, save the history and also give credit to where the info was sourced. Peace out.
