Maybe all of the residents/developers that are constantly being criticized for suburban development in this forum are not the bunch of country bumpkins as characterized by many posters.
I didn't ever say it was limited to Saskatoon. What I was trying to point out is that there is already a large amount of space in the suburban market and if the city and was offering a hypothetical alternative to people of this forum. Like minded individuals. From what I have been reading, I honestly don't think the members of this forum are normally outright criticizing the developers. Perhaps they are questioned as the reasons are not entirely clear to us, but hey thats why its fun to discuss and speculate.

I understand that because I have an opinion that doesnt make it right nor is anyone elses opinion wrong. I simply say I agree or disagree. Never have I ever read that a developer was an idiot or out to lunch or as you put it a country bumpkin and I have never implied such myself. Please dont villainize me or anyone else. Besides im a house with a fence in a quite neiborhood sort of guy, but who says I can't enjoy a vibrant busy downtown too?

I work in Saskatoon remotely for a company in Calgary, that just relocated to a massive business park called Quarry Park - it's got engineering and petroleum heavyweights in there, estimating thousands of employees flooding into the business park daily. It's 130 blocks out of downtown. I believe it's because their downtown got saturated and there's such a glut of people living in the burbs but working downtown that morning and evening rush are a serious pain in the —. For this reason, they built Quarry Park, and now if you choose, you can live in any of the nearby neighbourhoods or even some of the bedroom communities, and drive to work against the traditional flow of traffic.

Saskatoon of course isn't where Calgary is, but people constantly complain about traffic here anyway, so maybe people are trying to do the same by setting up suburban business parks.

I certainly wasn't trageting your comments in particular - yours was simply the most recent post illustrating a common theme. I was just being a —-disturber with my bumpkin comment. No offence intended - the divergent opinions are what keeps this place interesting.

Stars landing

Saskatoon STARS helicopter tried to land on College Drive last night close to the University Hospital due to the condition of the person on board. When it couldn't it went to it's pad on the eastern edge of the city, then a ground ambulance took over. Today's news said it will be three years until a pad is built on the new Children's Hospital.
With all the empty land on the U of S campus, I can't understand why they can't find room to build a temporary landing site close to the hospital. The landing pad does not take a lot of room. Time can be a matter of life or death.

Separate bike lanes to be proposed

By Sean Trembath, The StarPhoenix October 17, 2013

Quote:
A cycling advocacy group wants to convince city council to try out dedicated bike lanes in downtown Saskatoon.

The goal of Better Bike Lanes, an initiative launched by Saskatoon Cycles this week, is to approach council this winter with a plan for temporary "demonstration" bike lanes as an experiment next summer.

The proposed plan would see new, bike-only lanes alongside car lanes on Fourth Avenue from 19th Street to 25th Street and along 24th Street from Idylwyld Drive to Spadina Crescent.

"The reason we picked Fourth (Avenue) is it's a fairly large, wide-open street with parallel parking down the sides," said Sean Shaw, coordinator for Better Bike Lanes. "Twenty-Fifth Street will be opening all the way to Idylwyld in the next couple months, and that's going to really take off a lot of traffic pressure from 24th." In September, the city released a report outlining goals to more than double the rate of bicycle and foot commuting in Saskatoon over the next 10 years. According to Shaw, separate bike lanes are crucial if the city is to hit those goals.

"The only way that study after study has shown that you can get more people on their bikes is to provide a safer perception of cycling in the city. Those same studies have shown that separated bike lanes downtown are the way to go," he said.

The demonstration lanes would be set apart with paint and removable dividers, allowing them to be altered or removed if they prove to be disruptive or ineffective.

Thanks. Just a little misunderstanding, no big.

The exterior of the Nexus Building on 2nd Ave N appears to finally be nearing completion as finishes such as black stone slab and what appears to be stainless steel (??) are being installed.

However, I am disheartened to see that the Modern Press facade is being refinished with the same details. The art moderne heritage of the building is being completely destroyed. Ken Achs has done so many wonderful and sympathetic heritage restorations in the city, why would he do this to the Modern Press?

What I cannot understand is why helipads were not installed when STARS first rolled out. You're losing a massive advantage of helicopters over airplanes by not having pads at hospitals/emergency departments.

Yes, I was quite dismayed to see the exterior of the Modern Press Building being altered. The only other extant Streamline Moderne building I know of is the Adilman Building. We have so few examples of these, why would anyone willingly destroy one?

Especially by someone who is supposedly so committed to built heritage.

I saw a sign going up, but I was really hoping this project was dead, seems so stupid to me.

I don't know anything about their actual construction plans, but it sure looks like its going ahead by the webiste: http://www.nadiec.com/.

As a note, I think their opening video with "Welcome to Saskatchewan" paints a pretty interesting picture of the province. Funny to think we could be a hub for international business in the next few years. I think its a great project, as long as it actually comes to fruition.

"Interesting" is one word. I rather think it is deliberately misleading, which only fuels my suspicion that our province is being flagrantly used as a backdrop on which foreign investors are to be duped.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not all nimby or doom and gloom, if the marketing was deliberately realistic about what SK has to offer investors many would see the true potential and ability to tap in to some of the abundance and wealth we are sitting on here. I just am completely skeptical that all flight paths lead to SK, like the company is claiming, and because of that I know this is just a sham, people like those who are behind Brightenview don't earn their wealth by being upfront and honest.

This project seems to me to be nothing more than a glorified outlet mall. Which if it does happen is not to diminish the impact it would have on the local economy in Dundurn and area which I can't see it harming anything to the contrary. Except for the usual mom & pop hardware stores and such. I'm just saying it's not another West Edmonton Mall and it's being proposed to be built in six phases. So if it does get off the ground expect something much smaller to start as you might see in the renderings. Unlike some here, as for the location I'm not too surprised at all they chose Dundurn. I'm sure they got the land pretty cheap and why Dundurn you ask? Did I say, it's an outlet mall.

Hey Saskatoonies ... I've said it before on this forum, but I was in your city on Tuesday night to see Joe Satriani at TCU and I just had a blast. I feel like the downtown is so much more ... "downtown" feeling than Regina. I wish I could put my finger on it, but I dig your city a lot.

Pre-game beers and snacks at Winston's and then a short walk to the show. Great times!

Cheers!

For this place to work as proposed would require international purchasers to come from around the world, would require vast shipping and cargo channels and would require vast improvements to the local hospitality sector.

Is brightstar planning international flights to Camp Dundurn airstrip? Or is YXE going to be ready for direct overseas flights? What exactly do we have that major centers like New York, Toronto, Chicago Vancouver have that would entice this business travellers to spend an extra 3-8 hours and 1-2 connections to fly here (after flying 6 plus hours over the ocean) plus the hour and a half return trip to and from Saskatoon? And if we are to create something to become such a spectacular draw then hotel rooms will be seriously hard to find, hopefully when this opens we also have a couple thousand new rooms between Saskatoon and Dundurn.

How about the hundreds of millions Brightstar (or the municipality) will need to build road and rail to accommodate all the cargo they plan to move? Probably more like tens of billions because the infrastructure capacity just isn't even close to adequate right now.

The local hardware store in Dundurn won't be affected by this at all because it's not as if locals can just walk in and buy things at the wholesellers price point, because they are not buying it by the warehouse load. But if it is, then yes local mom and pop shops better worry.

This whole thing is entirely ludicrous. I personally love ludicrous, it makes life really interesting, especially when watching someone else blow their own money. If this thing works, it will actually cause hardship for local taxpayers, but the potential benefits could outweigh it. I think that is the same reason several prominent figures have been willing to attach their names to it, because there is little risk if it goes bad, but potential glory if it works, it's a lottery ticket.

I would personally believe this thing was genuine if they were located nearer YXE - say the brand new Aerogreen business park being built, or the brand new Marquis industrial area that has already been prepped and graded for a venture such as this with direct arterial access to the airport and major roadways. Or even easier, locate it in the continental shipping hub being built in Regina. To generate the hundreds of millions of sales this place will need to make it all feasible, a couple million more to buy land in the city rather than dirt cheap land in such poor proximity to the actual ammenities they will need to use would save them hundreds of millions and could actually make this possible, rather than just a bald-faced lie.

I haven't been following this with a great level of detail but I think your way off on what this is and who/what will be coming to it.

The whole point is that the purchasing people won't have to make the 6 hours transocean flights to get to China. Instead they will make a connection or two to get to Saskatoon from LA, New York etc etc. The center in Dundurn will essentially hold demo units and sales people from various overseas manufacturers who will sell their products to the major purchasors. The products will still be manufactured and shipped from China, it's not like they have to ship them here to be sold and then ship them out to North America.

All in all if someone wants to dump money into this thing all the power to them as long as the government isn't one of them.
