Yup. And New Yorkers don't complain that the Jets and Giants are in the same league as Green Bay and Jacksonville.

I long considered the NHL to be a joint league like you do but over the past few decades I have lost this impression.

Not sure if others feel the same way, but it's always the imperatives of the American market that seem to carry the day, even if it is to the detriment of the Canadian market, teams and fans.

This comment made me LOL!

Well this came out of nowhere

Roy Singh is launching the professional Canadian Premier League T20 next August, and he’s looking around the GTA for a location to build a $200 million, 35,000-seat professional cricket stadium.

Although he has met with Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and others, Singh said he’s “pretty happy” with Brampton

Bettman treats the Canadian teams like an inconvenience that the league is barely willing to tolerate, but those teams sure are a cash cow for the league.

Just consider the fan experience in Florida as opposed to Winnipeg... people in Florida can get season tickets starting at $7 a game and watch road games for free. In Winnipeg you have to sit on a waiting list for years ($100 a year) to get a crack at $50 per game nosebleed seats. Oh, and want to watch games on TV? That'll be another $10 a month.

Meanwhile Bettman shows up to introduce the new owners in Florida and tells the fans they're building a Stanley Cup contender. When Bettman came to announce the new owners of the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, his only remarks were to threaten us that the team would leave if we didn't buy 13,000 season tickets pronto. Gee, we're really so fortunate that the NHL has deigned to give our unworthy city a franchise

Well to be fair, these are decisions made by the individual teams, not by Bettman himself. Of course, the constant bailouts and endless lifelines extended by the NHL to the loser American teams make this possible.

That's what I mean. How many chances have markets like Phoenix and Florida been given now? The league will do anything to make it work down there. It would rather play in front of empty seats in Columbus instead of a packed house in Quebec. Not exactly what I'd call a "Canadian" league.

So in Europe players would rather be a part of the "Irish/Belgian soccer league" than the EPL? Would they rather play in the SM-Liiga or the KHL/NHL?

It happens everywhere that there's a superior league close by.

The difference is that Canada could have its own league that would still be arguably the top hockey league in the world, if slightly less dominant than the NHL is now.

Right now La Liga is one of the top two or three soccer leagues in the world... would Spanish football really be better off if Barca and Real decided they didn't need to compete with their small time domestic rivals and took off for the EPL instead? That's basically the sports scenario in Canada. We want the "glamour" of playing hockey in an American league when in reality the NHL is an overlooked sideshow on par with tractor pulls in the eyes of the average American.

Who knows how big time this could get? What's the untapped market for pro cricket in large and medium-sized American border cities and beyond?

Oh boy, do you think Toronto can get a franchise in Major League Cricket?

Well it would certainly be easier than starting a whole new cricket league from scratch. I'd peg the prospects of a Canadian cricket league succeeding as pretty low.

TORONTO - The Toronto Sun has learned the Brazilian men's soccer team will meet Russia in an international friendly in Toronto at the Rogers Centre on Nov. 19.

The exhibition will serve as preparation for next summer's World Cup in Brazil after the Russians drew Azerbaijan in UEFA World Cup qualifying on Tuesday to qualify for their first World Cup finals since 2002.

Major League Cricket IS a whole new cricket league from scratch.

I meant that joining MLC would be easier than starting a Canadian cricket league from scratch. By virtue of population numbers, the American-based MLC would have a better chance of succeeding.

You and Acajack are mocking Toronto by suggesting that we would try to get a team in an American based sports league, MLC. The only alternative would be trying to create a Canadian cricket league from scratch, which would be a much larger endeavor and unlikely to succeed.

I don't know if anyone actually read the link I posted - but a Canadian Cricket League starting next year is what's being proposed

I genuinely hope it succeeds, but MLC is probably the safer bet.
