I hope this project succeeds. I'm glad it's being redeveloped rather than raised.

A few shots I took today in East Saint John. Includes a new apartment building under construction on Ellerdale Street, new parking lot for King Mazda, and a shot of the Roc Maura expansion. Also, a shot of the TD Insurance expansion which doesn't seem to have progress much for months:

Up Town Saint John from Harbour Passage Trail

I captured this time lapse yesterday at dusk. It shows the Saint John Skyline from day to night as a cruise ship leaves. Best enjoyed full screen in HD. Just 30 seconds long.

And a photo taken after finishing up the limelapse after the cruise ship left.

I noticed that the old King Square Theatre is now officially under demolition. Rather sad...

I'm trying to feel bad about the Paramount being torn down but it's really difficult. It would have been neat to see it be redeveloped but it was an eyesore for 7+ years. Just more parking space to be developed at some time in the future, one would hope.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cineplex receives Competition Bureau approval to acquire 24 Empire theatres in Atlantic Canada

Toronto, ON, October 10, 2013 (TSX: CGX) – Cineplex Entertainment today received a No Action Letter (“NAL”) from the Commissioner of Competition, enabling the company to proceed with an acquisition of 24 Empire theatres in Atlantic Canada.

The parties had requested approval from the Commissioner of Competition to allow Cineplex to acquire two additional theatres – in Whitby and Kanata, Ontario – but the proposed transaction was subsequently restructured and those two theatres are not included in the NAL and will not be acquired by Cineplex.

The revised cash purchase price is approximately $194 million, subject to certain adjustments to be made at closing, and the transaction is expected to close later this month.

“Today’s announcement brings us an important step closer to our goal of establishing a truly national, coast-to-coast presence for Cineplex,” said Ellis Jacob, President and Chief Executive Officer, Cineplex Entertainment. “We look forward to providing our Atlantic Canadian guests an exceptional entertainment experience.”

On closing, Cineplex will remain Canada’s largest theatre exhibitor, operating 161 theatres and 1,635 auditoriums from coast to coast.

About Cineplex

Competition Bureau approves sale of Sobey-owned Empire Theatre cinemas

Canada's Competition Bureau has paved the way for Cineplex Inc. to take over two dozen movie theatres in Atlantic Canada owned by the Sobey family, an acquisition that will give the company close to three-quarters of the cinema business in the country.

"The Competition Bureau announced today that it will not challenge the proposed acquisition by Cineplex Inc. of 24 movie theatres from Empire Theatres Ltd.," the federal competition enforcement agency said in a statement.

Cineplex originally also sought two Empire movieplexes in Ontario, but Competition Bureau concerns prompted the company to pass up those theatres.

"Following a three-month review, the bureau determined that the proposed acquisition of the Empire theatres in Whitby and Kanata would likely lead to a substantial lessening of competition in those markets," the bureau's statement said.

"After the bureau advised Cineplex and Empire of its concerns, the parties revised their transaction to exclude the two Ontario theatres. Empire subsequently found an alternative buyer."

The sale and closure of 50 Empire Theatres locations comes as the Nova Scotia-based Sobey family, which controls parent company Empire Co. Ltd., gets out of the movie-theatre business to focus on its grocery stores. Earlier this year, Sobey bought up more than 200 Safeway stores in Western Canada in a $5.8 billion deal

The Cineplex acquisition is valued at $194 million and will give the corporation 161 theatres across Canada.

Landmark Cinemas is buying 22 other Empire locations, in Ontario and Western Canada, and four more will be closed or sold.

TORONTO - Cineplex Entertainment (TSX:CGX) said Thursday it can go ahead with its acquisition of 24 Empire theatres in Atlantic Canada.

Canada's largest chain of movie theatres said approval from the Competition Bureau means the deal will proceed and was expected to close by the end of the month.

The acquisition is valued at approximately $194 million.

The Toronto-based company said its original proposal also included the purchase of two theatres in Ontario — located in Kanata and Whitby — but it will no longer buy these properties.

Empire Company Ltd. (TSX:EMP.A) announced in June that it was getting out of the movie theatre business to focus on its Sobeys grocery store chain. In addition to the theatres sold to Cineplex, Empire sold another 20 locations in Ontario and Western Canada to Landmark Cinemas.

With the purchase, Cineplex will operate a total of 161 theatres across the country.

Good riddance to the Paramount eyesore. I'm glad we finally have closure on what's happening to the building. My only issue is it will now be an empty lot. It's prime real estate so hopefully somebody builds there soon.

I've never really understood the outcry of tearing down the Paramount. Compared to many other buildings in the city, it isn't even that historic - it was just a movie theatre that, once again, comparatively with other buildings in the city, wasn't even that old - it was only 70-ish years old. What's the historical value in a 70 year old, decrepit brick box?

Will there will be similar outcry when the Empire Theatre out east is eventually torn down?

There is an interesting article on mixed-income housing construction on CBC today that mentions that the Catholic Diosese is looking to renovating the old St. Vincent's High School on Cliff Street into housing, which I personally see as one of the more exciting possibilities in that area in years! It's too bad they didn't explore that idea for the other buildings they owned next door before they tore them down...

Good news for Saint John's unemployment numbers that came out yesterday. Steady job growth reported since April and the first time since then the rate has dipped below 10%.

I'm wondering what makes you say this..? Unless you're just referring to some time way in the future re: comparing to Paramount. In that sense, Empire out east is just a cookie-cutter theatre like every other suburban theatre. The Paramount was build in an era with balconies and stages and where there was at least some diversity and interest in the design.

It's not the exterior that people are lamenting; I think we can all agree the Paramount was ugly as sin on the outside. It's the beautiful art deco interior.

On the bright side, we still have the Imperial, which actually looks nice on the outside and has a far more beautiful interior than the Paramount ever did.

Reading further into the article its says:

"Statistics Canada says Saint John had a participation rate of 65.6 in September, up from 65.2 in August and 65.1 in July."

“It’s saying that the unemployment rate is falling but at the same time, it’s not because people are tuning out of the labour market,” Bourgeois said. “People in fact are re-entering it in good numbers. It’s a double positive.”

The new draft zoning bylaw has been released for public comment! You can find the draft bylaw, along with a 22-page summary document, here: http://www.saintjohn.ca/en/home/cityhall/developmentgrowth/communityplanning/zonesj/default.aspx

There will be a series of open houses concerning the updated bylaw coming up at the end of this month and into November:
