No clue. I think they just pulled it out of their asses. Maybe they're big fans of How I Met Your Mother or something.

U.S. outlet mall to take a little from everybody: Bayshore exec

Mark Brownlee
Published on October 29, 2013

A large U.S. outlet mall’s expansion into Ottawa is going to hurt all local retailers once it arrives next year, the executive responsible for Bayshore Shopping Centre said.

George Fiddler, who is responsible for Bayshore as vice-president of leasing with Ivanhoe Cambridge, is not excited about the prospect of U.S. giant Tanger Outlets opening 350,000 square feet of retail space close to Canadian Tire Centre in 2014.

“In a perfect world, I’d rather not see it happen,” said Mr. Fiddler, speaking as part of a panel at the Ottawa Real Estate Forum earlier this month. “Realistically, I know that it’s going to.”

However, Bayshore won’t be any worse off than other retailers in the area, he said, in part because outlet malls tend to draw customers from a much larger area than a traditional shopping centre.

He pointed to an outlet mall in Vaughan Mills, outside of Toronto, which on average brings in shoppers from 45 minutes away. That’s in contrast to most shopping centres, which usually draw customers from 15 to 20 minutes away, he said.

”It’s taking a little bit from everybody,” said Mr. Fiddler. “Is it going to hurt? Yeah, but it’s going to hurt everybody a little bit. It’s not just because Bayshore’s the closest that I think it’s going to hurt.”

The Tanger outlet mall is just one of several new retail spaces set to arrive in Ottawa during the next few years. Both Bayshore and the Rideau Centre are undergoing multimillion-dollar expansions, while a large new shopping space is also on the way to Lansdowne Park.

Despite concerns about what Tanger’s expansion will mean, members of the panel said that Ottawa still has plenty of room for growth in retail space.

Cindy VanBuskirk, the general manager of the Rideau Centre, said Ottawa shopping centres are finally starting to catch up with the demand from big-name retailers who have wanted to expand into the city.

“There’s no shortage of people lined up to get in the door,” she said.

She viewed her competitors’ expansion plans as a positive. One shopping centre getting the first store for a major retailer in the city – Swedish clothing retailer H&M opened its first location in Ottawa this month, for example – makes it easier for others to get them in the future, she said.

Glenn Featherstone, who as vice-president of retail leasing with Morguard is responsible for the St. Laurent shopping centre east of downtown, pointed to a recent deal to bring in retailer American Eagle as an example of why he doesn’t think Ottawa is stretched too thin.

St. Laurent had been negotiating with the company for some time but couldn’t accommodate it due to a lack of space. The retailer was set to open sometime in October.

He also hinted that changes may be on the way for St. Laurent.

The shopping centre “needs a bit of polish,” he said. Morguard has also acquired the land around the facility, opening up the door to a potential expansion in the future.

Nordstrom Rack is also on the hunt for Canadian store locations and is in talks with several landlords. We've been informed that a deal has likely been finalized for Canada's first Nordstrom Rack store at Ottawa's Trainyards, for example.

Does anyone know how large these store tend to be? (square footage wise). I ask because I'm wondering if there is an existing building for it at Trainyards or if they will be constructing another pod.

I'm really hoping for more development at Trainyards... There is still a very large central plot undeveloped in the middle of Trainyards and almost everything on the other side of that street (industrial) is begging for development.. it's all a bunch of old dilapidated warehouses.

What I think they need at Trainyards is more residential... There is none right now other then that senior community they just built across from it. It is relatively central, close to the 417, Riverside Dr, St-Laurent Road, lots of retail and close to the future LRT station.. Why not put a couple of appartment or condo towers? This could really become a nice and vibrant area...

**Btw, I live just 5 minutes away on Riverside Drive and complain that theres nothing or no retail close (can't just walk out and grab a cup of coffee somewhere, that's why I think Trainyards could be really interesting.

Nordstrom Rack will be about 5km away from the regular Nordstrom? That is a very short distance.

It would be nice if a store like Nordstrom Rack was in a pedestrian friendly environment. The Trainyards is hard to navigate. If I want to go to more than one store I gotta drive around to the different stores. Quartier DIX30 in Montreal was designed pretty well.

I was in Boston over the long weekend and they have a Nordstrom Rack right on the main high-end shopping street, but no downtown full-line Nordstrom, which seemed odd.

But, as kevinbottawa said, it was nice to have a walkable one to go to.

Nordstrom Rack is really just a Winners/Marshalls with nicer stuff, experientially, there's little cross over between it and its full-line store.

Bass Pro Shops

Announced that Bass Pro Shops will open their fifth Canadian store beside the outlet mall in Kanata in 2015. It will be at the 417 & Huntmar Dr. This is BIG news. I love Bass Pro Shops. Frequently visited the one in CrossIron Mills in Calgary when I lived there. Should be great for all the outdoors-men in the area. And I think the location is perfect for people leaving the city heading up to cottage country/hunting area in Northern Ontario. Plus it's directly off the highway.

Hallelujah!!!! I definitely love that place too. I think it is in the perfect location there too, catching people en route to the Highlands and Ottawa Valley from Highways 7 and 17 (and a lot of their clientele will likely live out that way as well).

Meaty addition to Gladstone Avenue
BY LAURA ROBIN NOV 20, 2013 IN FOOD & DRINK

Seed to Sausage is coming to the city.

The award-winning Sharbot Lake charcuterie company which makes chorizo, bacon and sausages that are snapped up by top chefs and home cooks has leased a space on Gladstone Avenue, just west of Bronson, and plans to open the Seed to Sausage General Store by mid-January.

“While lots of shops carry our products in Ottawa, there’s no one place that carries everything we make,” says Michael McKenzie, who started Seed to Sausage three years ago. “This will also give us a chance to experiment and feature new stuff, like the water buffalo salami with bacon and cranberries that we made for the Wine & Food Festival.”

But until now, unless you travelled to Sharbot Lake, about 125 kilometres west of Ottawa, you couldn’t find the whole range of products in one place.

And the new shop, like the Sharbot Lake one, will also carry steaks that have been dry-aged for 70 to 80 days, about 20 types of artisanal cheeses, including some that Seed to Sausage will smoke, and a range of gourmet food products from teas made in Perth to salts from Vancouver Island.

Seed to Sausage products, which include fresh sausages, dried salamis, bacon and cured meats, are sold at about two dozen stores in Ottawa, 15 in Kingston and as far away as North Bay, Collingwood and Toronto. They are also on the menu at such top restaurants as Beckta Dining and Wine, Murray Street, John Taylor at Domus Café and Wellington Gastropub.

“It’s a small space and I like that,” says McKenzie of the Gladstone Avenue corner building that was once a general store, but which has been an apartment building for the last 18 years. “I’d rather carry a limited selection of really great stuff than a huge range of things that are just confusing to the consumer.”

The new shop, at the corner of Gladstone Avenue and Cambridge Street, is co-owned by McKenzie and Ross May, a representative for McAuslan-St-Ambroise brewery.

“In the brewery business, you get a lot of experience putting on special events,” says May. “I’d love to put on something monthly at the new store — like a man’s charcuterie board for Valentine’s Day, or a cheese board for Canada Day with a cheese from every province, or pizza Saturdays where we’d bring in a wood-burning oven.”

McKenzie says he hopes that the area will become a food destination, with Tacolot (formerly Hang Ten) next door, a new spice shop to be called Cardamom and Cloves hoping to open across the street, Pressed sandwich shop half a block west and Red Apron and True Loaf just east of Bronson.
“I think this is going to be like a tipping point for the neighbourhood,” said Jeff Stewart, owner of Pressed. “I think it’s great.”

I think cost is a big factor - Gladstone is relatively cheap in terms of rent, yet there is a decent amount of traffic and good bus service.
