Canada has zero chance of hosting the World Cup in the next 30-40 years. A massive country, with low population, with no football relevance in the world, no star players, no potential to even qualify ever, no great stadiums, really bad train service, really expensive air service, little media clout in the world, and the list could go on.

I'm a huge football supporter so I'd love to see the World Cup, but it ain't happening. The US of A has a much better chance of hosting.

Ever heard of Qatar?

If I may quote ZeDgE "what a crock of shit" Obviously you know nothing of the Canadian soccer situation or apparently the Canadian scene in general.

Why would we need train service? This isn't little Europe.

Why do so many supposed "Canadians" here want to belittle their "own" country? I could understand the haterz but the ignorance of their own country's situation is truly mind boggling.

As for little media clout, seeing as I used to be in the news biz, a hundred years ago, perhaps you should know that Canada was the number two producer of TV productions in the world behind the USA and ahead of UK. Thought you should be enlightened. Haterz post your poop, you will be corrected.

Owen Hargreaves says hi, but I guess he's pretty much done now. I agree that it's highly unlikely that we would WC anytime soon, however. There are much bigger soccer countries that should get it before us.

BC Place Vancouver
Commonwealth Stadium Edmonton
New Roughrider Stadium expected opening 2017,2018 Regina
IGF Field Winnipeg
Tim Horton's Field Hamilton
Frank Clair Stadium Ottawa

Now the costly stadium improvements or new ones to be built would be: The Big Owe in Montreal could be the host to the World Cup final with $500million plus in improvements

Calgary would need a $150 million makeover for McMahon Stadium or a brand new stadium for $250 million plus

Halifax would need a brand new stadium $200-250 million plus

Toronto could use Rogers Centre as a semi final home in it's current capacity or it could remove the hotel out of the stadium and expand the stadium to host the Final.

Overall Canada could host the World Cup for between 2 and 4 billion dollars which is quite cheap compared to what Sochi Russia spent on the 2014 Olympics for friggin $50 billion
I agree with your ideas, If a country like Qatar with 2 million people can build a dozen 45 thousand+ seat stadiums with largely temporary seating than we may be easier off than starting from scratch..

How about expanding Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton to 80 or 90 thousand capacity for a more reasonable price would make the need to spend half a $billion on Montreal Stadium or Rogers Centre not necessary for Final, I know this goes completely against the demand for Final to be held in one of the top 2 most populous cities in Canada..
..but if it saves us 1/2 a billion mulla, well..i'm ok with it..

I don't see why, South Africa got it. It's not like it is a who deserves it contest. If that was the case UK and US would be permanent hosts.

There are a lot of criteria at work as to who wins a bid (that is if it was conducted fairly)

That would be a helluva admission of failure. Can't see it, unless they demand to play it in winter. Then I can see it being moved.

Self esteem and knowledge for starters but that comes from not hailing from a metropolis that doesn't subjugate itself to a place like Buffalo and has a hate-on for its own.

I think 2026 is a very real possibility. With Fifa's rotational system, no country from a soccer federation can host a World Cup if it's soccer federation has hosted one of the previous two World Cups. With 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar, that means European and Asian countries cannot bid on hosting 2026. Also from what I understand the 2030 World Cup is likely to be held in Uruguay commemorating the first World Cup held there 100 years prior, so South America may be out of it as well. That leaves Africa (who hosted 2010) and Australia as really the only competition to the World Cup in North America. Considering North America hasn't hosted since 1994, there is a very good chance of the World Cup being in North America in 2026. The only realistic options are Mexico (which has hosted twice), USA (1994) and Canada. Given that Canada has hosted the U20 World Cup and will be hosting the Women's World Cup in 2015, the next logical step is the bid on 2026. If the political will is there to get the stadiums in order, I think Fifa would love to have it in Canada.

Owen Hargreaves was a major flash in the pan. He is completely forgotten about in the UK.

Also, to the person who said train travel is not an issue. I can tell you efficient travel is a MAJOR issue.

Canada is completely non existent on the minds that matter about football. That's reality. Cheerleading that Canada is great doesn't change reality. I wonder how many Canadians have been to Europe to see how others view their country. Don't get me wrong, people like Canada, but just because they think it's a good country, doesn't mean they would give a sympathy vote to Canada to hold the World Cup there.

From a European perspective, Canada would be far better going after Rugby World Cup. Canada at least has a bit of respect in Rugby.

If Canada was given a rugby world cup I would never ask for anything again

We have everything to host big events. That's what we do best. It saddens me to see "defeatists" in Canada (for lack of a better word) who seem to be too young to have experienced the time when we sought out big projects and succeeded (save the 2010 Olympics being recent)
It would be politically toxic to justify pumping $500 million into a dumpy Big O which was a mistake (execution wise) to begin with. It would be cheaper to blow the thing up and build it again then "renovating" it. It's been in a state of renovations for close to 20 years only ending a few years back. The Big O is simply a mess and it's either used as is or blown up, no renovations aside from modest ones will ever take place there.

Glad this is not lost on others. The Big O's capacity was much greater for the 76 Olympics, but was reduced to accommodate baseball. There is an entire end blocked off by the jumbotron (which sorely needs replacing). It's entirely possible to remove the antiquated screen, and install temporary seating to bring capacity up to 80,000. After the Cup finals, the seats can be removed, and a new screen installed.

But lets be honest with ourselves, the Stade Olympique needs a LOT of work just to get it up to code - several hundred million dollars worth. Which is why any bid that includes Montreal would require federal support. Not impossible, but it will be tricky convincing taxpayers to double down on a facility that is a notorious money pit.

Olympic Stadium is one of the largest concrete structures on the planet. It isn't a matter of blowing it up or not, you'd have to take it apart piece by piece. I think the Globe and Mail pegged demolition costs for it at something like $600 million dollars.

Apparently the Metro runs directly under the stadium as well, so any attempts to implode the Big O would also collapse the tunnel. So for the price it would take to demolish, it would still be worth the expense to refurbish.
