How did I not notice this before? There are a few more details in this story regarding another massive development in Brentwood.

Looks like this Richmond project is moving ahead:

A $150-million development proposed for north Richmond could become an international hub for education, boasting a potential to accommodate 600 foreign students, along with language schools, colleges and universities.

Dubbed Global Education City, the development would occupy a site on the west side of No. 3 Road, between Bridgeport Road and Sea Island Way, near River Rock Casino Resort.

Wensley Architecture Ltd. has submitted plans to city hall for a nine-storey office and campus building fronting Sea Island Way, a 15-storey dormitory building at No. 3 Road, and a six-level parkade and amenity building fronting Bridgeport Road, according to the city.

Planning staff are reviewing the proposal, which has yet to be considered by city council.

An online promotional video sells the project as “Canada’s premium education super centre” with space for children’s education centres, language schools, career and technical colleges and universities, along with student residences. It suggests a completion date of spring 2016.

Realtor Joyce Soo is helping market the project. She said it’s “the first of its kind in North America,” adding it would serve as headquarters for CIBT Education Group.

...

Soo’s website, advertising a pre-sale of rentable units—office space and 500-square-foot student residences—said the project responds to growing demand.

^ ESL schools can barely make a go of things in C class office space, and they think they can get them to pony up for new construction?

Why is Richmond the seeming dumping ground for every hare-brained scheme these days?

Why are projects outside of the City of Vancouver usually of better design?

Expansion plans at Hemlock:

http://globalnews.ca/news/876785/owner-o...n-small-ski-hill-into-major-destination/

http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/mountain_resorts/resort_plans/proposed/index.htm#hemlock - Also contains the master plans for Whistler - Blackcomb with later phases having lifts right down to function junction. There are also plans for a new resort at Garibaldi to Brohm Lake on the Highway 99.

For the Hemlock plans I am concerned with the low elevation of some of the runs, right down to 600m. It is too bad Hemlock wasn't built on the mountains to the east of Harrison Lake. By the looks of it there are some nice ones for skiing to 1800 m in elevation.

Polygon received 4th Reading & Final Adoption for their 37-storey tower at 5821/29/45/53/61 Barker Ave & 5808/26 Patterson Ave. Just north of the Patterson Station, bordering Central Park. Arguably the best Metrotown tower location available as there will be nothing blocking it to the west.

Fire destroys buildings in downtown New Westminster
Traffic shutdown for several blocks around Columbia and MacKenzie streets

CBC News Posted: Oct 10, 2013 5:46 AM PT Last Updated: Oct 10, 2013 8:12 AM PT

A large fire that broke out on Columbia Street in downtown New Westminster, B.C., on Thursday morning has destroyed several buildings and businesses in the area.

Police say the fire broke out sometime before 3:40 a.m. PT at the building on the corner of Columbia and MacKenzie streets and by 5 a.m. the building was engulfed in flames.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and by 6 a.m. the building that once housed the Copps family shoe store had collapsed and a new bridal shop and a restaurant in the building were destroyed.

For a short time the fire appeared be under control, but then by 6:50 a.m. the flames had broken out again in at least one neighbouring business, and firefighters were once again battling to get the fire under control.

Initially about four fire trucks were battling the fire, but around 7 a.m. several more fire trucks arrived by police escort.

By 7:30 a.m. the fire appeared to have destroyed several more buildings on Columbia and Front streets, but firefighters once again appeared to have the flames partially under control. .......

I live a couple blocks from there and I'm pretty gutted. The building the fire started in is basically gone, and was one of the more prominent and iconic heritage buildings on Columbia. And it sounds like at least one other heritage building is a write off (luckily not one of the most picturesque ones...). Baically half a block of heritage buildings in the heart of New West are gone. It really sucks.

That is terrible news the 600 block is really basically at the heart of the Columbia Street area.

Not to belittle the loss, but it is too bad the fire didn't reach the front street parkade...

This goes to show that we need more concrete buildings rather than wooden ones. In my opinion, there would be way less destructive fires if more buildings are concrete.

Considering that this building was built shortly after the great fire of 1898...

This ain't Coal Harbour here, so I'm surprised at seeing travertine depicted on a project that can't seem to afford full glazing for the penthouse floors (especially considering that the ceilings appear to be sloped)...

Can't help but have a sneaking suspicion the fire was caused by arson. Developer wanting that land that went to great lengths perhaps?
