That was far from the only issue with this house.

Is this the architect's own house? On Google, this address is on an architect's CV as their home or contact address.

It was really something to see this house being moved this morning. It was beside the Spiral House on the escarpment (1A St SW) and was moved to a lot near Mission Road.

There hasn't been much going on in Parkhill but I was out for a walk in the winter sun and here is a little camera phone update.

2 new houses at the south semi-dead end of 1A St SW overlooking Stanley Park.

I like this house at the end of 2 St SW, but I would want windows on the south side of the house, not an almost solid stone wall.

Soon to be a Maillot Homes home. I wonder if this house will get knocked down or moved?

I was at a soiree in Varsity Estates before Christmas and ended up by coincidence chatting with the (understandably) angry neighbour. He said the house being built encroached on his property as well as being too tall and it has been pretty much at a standstill ever since.
I guess my neighbours aren't so bad...

Looks like it's encroaching on both sides! How does this even happen? Is it getting missed by the architect, the construction company, or by the city planning staff?

Ultimately it would be planning in the approval stage. After that, it would lie with the contractor to build it as per APPROVED plans. That said, did it go to SDAB for any variances?

Don't know the details, sorry, just that it cost the property owner I spoke to $20,000 in legal fees to stop the encroachment from continuing.

The perimeter construction fence is finally down at the Spiral House. Not sure if the house is occupied yet. Hopefully they start landscaping soon.

There are a couple of houses on 33 Ave that are taking just as long to finish.

It must be quite rare to move a house that new. Amazing what people will do to get what they want built in the right location.

I have to say I do like the 'modern' infill style going on in Calgary. You know what I mean, houses which all more or less sort of look like this:

https://maps.google.com/?ll=51.071525,-1...Dh-5E_EbA597pAclw&cbp=12,152.83,,1,-5.95

Some are more interesting to look at than others, but what I prefer about them compared to infill styles which have shown up in the past decade in Calgary is there is a definite "style". Much of the previous infill iterations just seemed like a collection of random elements which didn't go together at all, all combined on a canvas of cheap looking stucco, usually with larger than desirable blank stucco'd wall portions:
Here is an example only 8 years old which shows how terrible things were not long ago:

https://maps.google.com/?ll=51.071528,-1...VMVaM_dg_Iy7ganieg&cbp=12,233.7,,1,-4.01

No sense of a distinct style, just a mess, and with a cheap look.

This new style has enough additional facade articulation to make it somewhat interesting to look at.

I feel that decades in the future this will be a style that will be recognizable as being from this era. One thing I'm curious is how widespread this particular style (one or two colours of stucco, multi segmented aluminum windows, sections of 'stone siding') is? Calgary? Alberta? Canada? North America? Anyone know?

Definitely different than the west coast look of Vancouver house design, but I don't know if Calgary architects are copying other urban areas or where this look originated.
