What an inane piece of crap that was. Don't know her, but hate her.
I thought it was a funny take on consumerism and society. But, then again, I'm not very SERIOUS.

There's an advertisement for a Milestones restaurant franchising opportunity at Lansdowne Park in the latest Ottawa Business Journal.

Hmmm. That's not new to Ottawa.

I do enjoy the Milestone's downtown (although that might have a lot to do with their clever kids menus, which I freely acknowledge is a bit sad.) Not sure there is much need for one in the Glebe.

What the Glebe needs is an honest to God steakhouse.

Unfortunately, just another example of the very UN-unique restaurants and shops that will be able to afford a spot in the Lansdowne Mall.

What is that plan that you posted? Is it an updated version?

Also, do you know what is happening with the portion of the retail that has been reserved for local retailers? Are the rents to be lower for those spaces?

Oh, look, you're back. Clearly hoping to retain some shred of credibility through a micron's worth of criticism at a single facet of this plan. That doesn't reek of being "washed up".

First off, we simply know that your statement isn't true. Whole Foods, Sporting Life, Il Fornello, South St. Burger, and JOEY will be unique to Ottawa. These are five confirmed (remember, we don't have all the details yet) tenants for Lansdowne that will be the only locations in the city of Ottawa. As for things like Rexall, Jack Astor's, Milestone's, BMO, etc. there's a part of an article that puts it in perspective.

Quote:
Rexall claims 40 stores in Ottawa already, though none in the Glebe or Old Ottawa South, territory heavily covered by Shoppers Drug Mart. The Glebe has a Scotiabank and a Royal Bank but no TD or BMO.

...

...OSEG has promised a shopping experience unique in Ottawa, but has added that Lansdowne’s shops will have to include less exciting things, too, that will fill in the gaps in the Glebe’s established retail strip on Bank Street. People going to football games at the fixed-up stadium, for instance, need places to eat, and they won’t all be Michelin-starred bistros.

“I wouldn’t call them unique,” allowed Councillor Rainer Bloess, who has voted for the Lansdowne plans, about the newly announced tenants. “But that doesn’t mean they’re not appropriate. In order to make the experience whole, you need certain types of services and goods that might not be exactly unique.”

Although, I wouldn't expect you (probably a Glebe resident) to understand, let alone have done their research and offered a fair and non-partisan opinion.

Jam-Pho, what's that in your sig? "name calling is what they do when good arguments can't be found - don't sink to their level." Maybe you had better follow you own advice and keep your arguments sharp, and your snipes to yourself.

Anyhoo, thank goodness now I'll have a Rexall - so much different from the 3 Shoppers' nearby. Hip hip hooray! Callooh callay! And I think the neighbourhood could survive without a BMO branch.

BTW, you should be more careful to do your research too. Despite the article's assertion that there is no TD bank in the Glebe, there is, at the Isabella Loblaws. There's also one just over the bridge in Old Ottawa South. I'm frankly surprised they would open another branch when there are 2 others nearby.

I'm curious whether the likes of Jack Astors, Joey's Milestone's, and all of the rest of the suburban parking lot-dwelling, chain, crap restaurants were clever enough to demand a clause in their leases that might let them wriggle out in the event that the movie theatre doesn't open (since for the time being we still don't know who, if anybody, will be picking up this last of Empire's sloppy seconds).

As for being "fair and non-partisan" (sic, I think you meant to say "impartial") apart from a few posters here I can't say that I've noticed much impartiality on display here (least of all from you). As much as I may keep futilely flinging criticism, there seems scant willingness among the Lansdowne-huggers to seriously consider the concerns raised by the critics.

I for one am always glad to see my actual bank in an area I visit to save on service fees. Those creep up fast.

You can't say that the idea of a movie theatre was bad. It is not the City's or OSEG's fault if Empire backed down. Also, the proposed chain restaurants are still a step up from, say East Side Mario's or Boston Pizza. Like we've heard before, we can't expect Michelin stared restaurants.

What sort of retail/entertainment/eating establishments were you expecting or would you like to see?

That looks like an old plan that showed the type of clients Trinitiy hoped to attract. I'm basing that on the fact that Miss Tiggy Winkles is in there. When the plan came out Tiggy Winkles were very vocal about the fact that they'd never spoken to Trinity and had no intention of moving into the development.

Yeah, now I KNOW you're John Martin. Trying to abbreviate my username in a playground-level insult attempt is typical of him/you.

As for the Franky quote, you don't know the whole story. He was a lot like you; ignorant, and refused to see other people's perspectives, let alone acknowledge that they had a point, and often failed to answer their questions. The quote from him is quoted for the sheer irony of that statement coming from him.

Additionally, I'm not insulting you. I'm merely speaking out loud about what I am objectively observing. It's part of the scientific method.

Yes, completely ignore the merits of such a thing for people in your own neighbourhood! As we all know, it's clearly all about YOU.

"Subject is incapable of comprehensive reading and picking up on inferred information."

If you even bothered to read the full article (I'm hoping you did, but hope rarely gets me anywhere in this forum), you could see that the writer was inferring that there was no TD on Bank Street, which is true.

Furthermore, you are not qualified to determine whether a locations merits something or not. These are businesses that try and grow themselves. If TD is willing and wanting to put another TD in the Glebe area, then it means they've done some research and found it to be a sound business venture.

No, I meant non-partisan. I thought you'd be able to understand that given your "us vs. them" glasses you see this development through. Also, you've even implied political and legal meddling in the past, so I figured it was appropriate. I guess I need more lessons before I can say I am able to speak "John Martinese".

Hey everybody! Have I been impartial, or is "aleczdad" right for once with regards to one of his claims? And John, your "criticism" is often unfounded or invalidated by myself and others; you just refuse to accept or acknowledge it.

I think it's hard to be impartial at this point in time. The time for debate was ages ago and I was far more receptive to opposition at that time. The fact that we are really well beyond the point where we should be moving on, and the fact that opponents to Lansdowne have shown an unwillingness to move forward in any sort of constructive way means that I just try to tune them out and ignore them and refuse to let them dampen my anticipation.

If only they had devoted their time to trying to improve the project rather than fight against it, even after it's been approved.

Wasn't there a percentage of "uniqueness" that had to be reached?

Some opponents (not necessarily alecz_dad, I don't recall) acted as though not only should every store be new to Ottawa, but they should also sell products that can not currently be bought in Ottawa. That's a little extreme.

I think the actual agreement is something like 35% of retailers or some such. It may be mentioned in the article that is linked above, but I can't view it because I've gotten all my Citizen freebies for the month.

Hmmm... Perhaps its wishful thinking, however given the fact they continue to build the cinema makes me think they might be waiting for a bigger separate announcement that Ottawa will finally get a Paramount/Scotiabank Theatre.
