My preference, particularly if RWP is the CCH location, would be something around 25-30 stories. I would add a great deal to the skyline and create some pedestrians in that area of town, and go a long way at connecting the urban fabric along 200 S. In the future I would then possibly like to see something around 15-25 stories on the NW corner of that same block, another hotel would make sense in that location, as it is next to the SP, and kiddy corner from ESA.

While I too would like to see Salt Lake City eventually get a signature 40-50 story tower I would actually prefer the addition of two 20-30 story towers. While the 40-50 would add to the skyline, two 20-30's would add to the urban fabric of downtown, eliminating "missing teeth" ie parking lots, and adding street presence that helps to continue and extend the areas of walkability.

If were to pick a desired location for a 40-50 floor tower my two preferred location would be one of these two:

1) 100 S and Main, SW corner, with the lobby space surrounding the white Zions Bank building and a shorter 10 floors or so on either the Main or 100 S face and the 40-50 on the other face, or possibly something set back a bit, 10 floors at the sidewalks, step back 5-10 feet, another 10-20 floors, etc. This location would complete the urban street fabric on Main from S. Temple all the way down to 4th S, with the exception of the small parking lot south of the JC Penney building. As well as the urban fabric from State to W. Temple.

2) Carl's Jr site. This would nearly complete the area surrounding Gallivan, less the Eat-a-Burger lot. This location would complete the corner of State and 200 S, and would fill in the last surface lot between S. Temple and 4th S, on the west side of State.

Both those locations would work well with the height, as there is already plenty of towers surrounding them, to provide a more stepped look.

As for 20-25 story towers, my preferred locations would be the following: Pierpont and W. Temple SW corner; SE or SW Corner of W Temple and 300 S.

I'm with you for sure on the Carl's Jr. spot. I think there is no better place in Salt Lake for signature tower.

That lot is crying out for development. I can hardly believe it's gone undeveloped so long.

What are your thoughts about a CCH more in line with the Gaylord National Harbor hotel and convention center going into SLC? just the hotel part that is....18 floors, but 2000 rooms.

I Got Mail (e-mail). My friend sent me the sketches and renderings of the possible Convention Center Hotel on block 67, which also has a Office Building and two apartment buildings.

The hotel appears to be about 23 floors and the office building appears to be a little taller at about 25 floors. While those are nice, together they do make a wall. Being separated from the core of towers and to the west of them I fear that they would block much of the core buildings. But the concept is nice.

I'm sorry. But I hate it. Just a bunch of short walls. No more than two buildings for the CCH are necessary.

I don't think anyone has posted any rendering for it, but the American Cancer society is building a "Hope Lodge" on the site with an abandoned church at 100 South and 400 East.

There's parts I like about those plans and there's parts that I dislike. First the dislikes.......the hotel is a lot shorter and longer then I had hoped for.i fear having a longer building there will block the north end of our skyline. I think a thinner taller building at about say....30-35 stories would work. And why is it that we just keep ending up with buildings in their 20's. when are we ever going to break that peak of having something 30 plus 422 FT plus? How the hell can Lehi or Sandy dare to come up with dream towers of 40-45 stories towers, but in the one city where a tower of that height would work nobody dares to come up with anything pass 25 stories. If Lehi can vison a 45-story skinny hotel at over 500 FT in a area with by far more open land and where it's not even needed why can't we see that same kind of vison here in Salt Lake where that kind of hotel is needed?
Ok now for the likes.....I like how there's a group of buildings that are between 15-25 stories. Should really help expand the skyline to the west and expand downtown as well. The west side could use some more taller buildings. I like the outdoor retail area there. I really like the shape of the office building since on one side it isn't boxy.
With that said I wonder if these plans are even for reals or is it just more of a vison? Seems like for a group of people who have been working hard on this hotel and trying to keep it hush hush to only see that somebody has spilled the beans I would be pissed. Are these even the final plans?

I think bringing up Sandy and Lehi towers is a moot point. It's easy to dream up tall towers when there's not chance they'll ever be anything except a dream. I can dream up a tower that goes to the moon. Won't happen though.
Again, the reason Salt Lake gets a lot of wide, squat towers is because of the size of our city blocks. Towers go tall because of demand and limited space. Unfortunately, we have plenty of space to suit the demand.
I don't dislike this concept. I certainly like the density of it, but it seems pretty ambitious, and like the Sandy and Lehi pipe dreams, I wonder about how likely it is to come about in this incarnation.

Hey Bob, Thanks for making the effort to get your hands on those renderings and posting them. It's definitely appreciated. Whether the final outcome is the same, something similar or completely different, it will make for a lot of stimulating discussion. I hope everyone will put in their two bits.

An underground tunnel from the convention center to the ESA plaza is an interesting touch. I know that OR has used ESA as overflow before and didn't really like it but if there was a connection then maybe it could be used as a long term solution.

I like the overall ideas in the concept, and while the hotel is long and slightly short, it's curved nature seems to lessen the giant wall effect. I really like the mid block street and I would hope that whatever the final concept is will end up including a new mid block street. There are some things I'd like to see changed, but it's simply a concept.

My jury is still out on that concept...but if we're seeing even tentative concepts/renderings, I see it as a good thing. Honestly, for me I don't care if the CCH is a new tallest or not--I want to get the hotel built and get the rooms occupied. It will be such a boon to conventions, tourism, business, and future efforts (trying for the Winter Olympics or other international events) to bring people to Salt Lake City that we've got to get it built. I want the rooms, I want the added convention space; if it's a gorgeous building or a new tallest for SLC, that's just gravy.

Delts, if that's where I think it's going, the LDS Church on the site is still standing. No idea if they've stopped having meetings there or not, but as of two weeks ago, the old building was still there. So...no.

This isn't terrible or anything, but why don't they just convert the existing building?
