hahaha. That is the funniest thing I've read. Thank you Arkhitektor for posting the pic of the Grand Lisboa. I haven't figured out how to post pictures on here. I found that hotel while trying to find a Structure for a school project. I was surprised someone said okay to building it.

Always find it amazing that a development that started a whole year later then another development has already topped out while the other is still a hole in a ground. I swear the developer must have only hired two workers for the state street project.

For those counting steps to constuction of the Performing Arts Center and tower.. Bennion Jewelers has removed its pretty shiny things and put up a sign that they are in transit to their new home on West South Temple. That space, next to Deseret Books, looks not quite ready.

That's a cool building. But as for me, I'm much rather see a plain building that sits right up on the street like an urban structure ought to.

A building like that — and a lot of these flashy, starchitect buildings — include tons of empty space/"plazas" and bizarre street engagement. In bigger cities that's fine because there's so much building density elsewhere.

But in SLC there's a crushing amount of empty space. All of our high profile buildings — the library, the PSB, the federal courthouse — also aren't urban in the way they engage the street.

All of which is to say I'd rather see a bland building that looks like it belongs in a city than a beautiful building that looks like it belongs in a suburban office park.

Though it would be very easy to have both the interesting aspect of the Marina Towers and an excellent street engagement. The two are not mutually exclusinve. Both the The Regent and 222 have excellent street engagement. I think we all agree, if they place the CCH Tower on 2nd S., they had better give the street presence a lot of progressive urban thought. For that matter, wherever they put the CCH Tower.

Along with SLCProjects and many on this forum, the one additional element I would like to see with upcoming towers is progress in the height department. As SLC grows and expands it's CSA, it would be nice to see 40-50 story towers begin to crop up at it's core.

Ultimately, I would much rather have both additional attractive towers such as The Regent, 222, Westgate, 99 West, upcoming 111, along with the Conference Center, Temple Sq. Campus, Safdie Library, Gallivan, PSB, City Hall etc. The really interesting and beautiful city cores have both, and I'm very pleased with the way SLC is developing. Salt Lake City's Public Spaces are making it so much more attractive than the typical Western U.S. city. Very much agree though that we should continue on with additional Urban density, such as the Regent.

A couple of elements that would really advance SLC's climb to World Class, in addition to the continued development of it's inner blocks, would be to target some of it's massive intersections downtown. Where the corners are relatively undeveloped they should be cut back. Then the center of the intersection needs to be given a good dose of Europe. You know what I mean, those fountains w/sculpture that all the tourists go gobsmacked over.

I can't remember the date announced, but have they started the redo of the old Univ. Tower yet?

...And FYI, I see where Steve Forbes comments are coming from beautiful Salt Lake City this morning.

I got a new job in a shiny new tower downtown. Much better than my old location out in the burbs. Here a few pics I took from around the office.

This shot turned better than I could have imagined. It will be fun to see the La Porte project rise from here, eventually.


Really excited to watch 111 S rise from this view. Maybe once construction starts I will take a picture every week so I can create a time lapse of the progress. Also, you can see Boyer101 as well as the parking structure next to the future Boyer 151.

You can make out the ESA hotels in the distance. Hopefully one day I can watch the CC hotel rise from this angle too!

Great Photos from 222 South Main. Has work started on the Boyer Parking Garage? If you look closely in the 2nd pic you can see the site being cleared out.

Regarding the convention hotel, i always thought that it would be cool if the Marriott hotel (a wall) at City Creek got replaced with a 30-40 story Marriot with a sky bridge going over the road tothe convention center; with some restaurant s at at the bottom.
That being said, it sound most likely that the hotel is going to be at block 67, which is the block south-west that the convention center boarders at the north and east. I have contact that showed me some early site sketches and renderings. It showed a 18-20 story hotel, restaurant s and retail, about a 15 story office building, and a future apartment building at around 10 floors.

I will try to get something from my friend at post it here.

Wow, great info. But if true about the CCH is only being around 18-20 stories then that will be a big disappointment. If this is just a simple Hotel with other buildings to be added around it then this is great news for the area, but please don't tell me that our CCH will only be 20-stories.

If the convention hotel is going on the RWP site I would actually prefer it not be a new tallest. At that location a new tallest would really look out of place and because of zoning it would never be surrounded by other tall buildings. An average sized tower would look fine because as downtown grows it will blend in.

Maybe I'm not understanding the whole picture, but a 20 story hotel of 1000-plus rooms translates into a GIANT WALL.

Bob, please explain further the massing and placement of the Hotel. If it wasn't a giant wall at 18 to 20 floors, then there's no way those early sketches were anything more than a fanciful first stab? Was it at least a highly stylized wall, engaging the street in an attractive urban set-up ??

Pleease, anything but a long wall that resembles the Phoenix CCH!
