I'm very impressed about this first phase of U2 replacements. Rode in a refurbished Edmonton U2 yesterday, and Calgary made the right choice!

The $3.4 billion number for that Maglev sounds really really low.

considering it cost the Chinese ~$1.2B to build 30km of track for the Shanghai Maglev (even with their ridiculous supply of cheap labour), yeah I'd say the ~300km trip to Edmonton would cost a helluva lot more than $3.4B

^ The picture on their website is for much lighter vehicles, so lighter guideway. Betting on new tech is a huge risk. The government likely won't put any funds into any potential highspeed project besides maybe some assistance with land acquisition. If they can do it for that price, it would be profitable even without government dollars for right of way.

I like it because MAG sounds like MAGpie. Our unofficial regional bird. According to me.

On a 4 car train, there are currently 8 cabins. You need 2 at least (have to be able to reverse a train in an emergency, from the other end). So you could in theory take out 6 cabins, and add 12 more standing bodies. Out of 240 passengers.

A 5% capacity increase, at the cost of incredibly reduced flexibility - cars couple and uncouple all the time - as well as increased cost because now you'd be designing several models of car. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Also, the Buffalo design is the only one worth doing.
Crush load on the SD160s is 226 IIRC. So, almost quadruple your estimate.

Dadgum, I'm out of town the day CT announces new trains.

Very nice designs, all three -- though I concur with the general feel of the forum in ranking them Buffalo/Bow/Mask. Still, a slick set of equipment, and I'm thrilled about better side seating.

I figured as much. Going conservative is easiest.

Either way, you're not going to add much capacity by expanding the standing area by 2-3 feet in either direction. Not on a 60 (I think?) foot long car.

I once again appeal to CPS and our society as a whole - we simply cannot hold up our entire transportation grid because of a single accident. Take some quick photos, remove whatever damage exists, and get the damn system working again. Sorry if we don't always know the second-by-second details of why yet another person was foolish enough to walk onto train tracks.

The capacity gain by having married pairs of cars (i.e. removing one driver's cab per LRV-of-current-dimensions) is in the 5-6% range.

When weighed against the reduction of fleet management benefits as they exist with the current size of the fleet and also the fact that Calgary will be regularly running consists with an odd number of current-dimensioned LRVs (3) for quite some time, it's not that attractive an option at this time.

Harper says Ottawa will help extend Toronto’s subway system.

So Prime Minister Harper, what about Calgary?

I doubt Toronto is getting any special funding more than the normal per capita grants. Things just don't work like that.

Edmonton is actually extra special funding for its SE LRT through P3 Canada.

I did a photo tour of the West LRT yesterday and posted it in the Transit Thread in the Canada Section. Should I post it here too?

Has there been any thought at Calgary Transit to having the 301 follow the potential future path of the combined NCLRT and SELRT?
