As far as cycling is concerned there needs to be serious upgrading of the networks outside of the crossing. This project will be unacceptable if they just throw $2 million or so to upgrade the networks. It is not enough considering this project will likely cost another $3-5 billion if it is like the Port Mann. Surrey has a plan for a greenway pathway parallel to the 99 on the east side of the 99. This project should fund the entire length. At the same time the route though Delta should be done properly, ideally a multi-use path separated from the 99 or highway 10. The path on Shell Road in Richmond should be upgraded and extended and connected to the Canada Line bridge and to the tunnel.

My Proposed Cycling infrastructure routing and upgrades
This is what is needed and should be provided by this project. This is what should have been provided with the the Gateway projects.

What the Gateway project delivered is not good enough. More should be demanded with the 99 corridor project. Connecting to existing bike networks is not good enough.

Having cyclists use the shoulder of highway 17 is stupid. A bike *path* alongside the entire route would have made a lot more sense. Cycling on a freeway is not pleasant or safe - for either cyclists, or motorists. I agree this should be part of the project.

Press Release ("Scope" (i.e. number of lanes?) to be developed):

http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2013-2017/2013PREM0095-001430.pdf

Quote:
Engineering and technical work is now underway to develop a project scope and business case for the new bridge and associated Highway 99 corridor improvements. This work will be presented for public discussion next spring, ensuring that the project remains on track for construction to begin in 2017.

In the interim, the ministry will proceed immediately to lengthen the Steveston off-ramp on Highway 99 at the north end of the George Massey Tunnel. This will improve safety and reduce Highway 99 congestion for motorists at this location. The project will go to tender by the end of September.

"Concept" video flyover showing 5 lanes (1 HOV, 4 general purpose) each way,
and strangely, it shows a flyover ramp from old Hwy 17 (rather than SFPR):

Also some good news contained in the press release:

And an interesting quote in the Vancouver Sun article:

Quote:
Clark said the tunnel has become the worst bottleneck in western Canada and it is impeding commerce.

It's too bad that by the time this is built I (hopefully) won't be living in Ladner, but this is a much needed improvement. Still very excited about this.

LOL I think there will be a provincial election before construction even starts. Who needs a referendum anyway?

Tell that to the people looking for the Province to step up to the plate on Translink funding. 20 lanes of bridges and barely a dime for Translink. The best they could do was grudging support of the Evergreen line that had been languishing for over a decade.

Funny. Construction starts in the year of an election. Don't you think this is a way to give people an excuse to vote them back into power in 2017? The dating is clever.... clever....

And I think I hear Gordon Price's head exploding somewhere.

Is it my eyes, or is there not a proper interchange at Steveston Hwy with this new proposal?

Isn't any new crossing going to be tolled anyway?

I know there were no toll gantries in the video, but you can bet that part will be revealed later.

The music, yes! ukk! That's what struck me first, even before the video got rolling along very far!!

Seriously, that seems like a fairly wide bridge. How will they narrow the freeway back down so that traffic lanes can be squeezed onto Oak Street? Or is there some other road / lane configuration in planning?

Probably a lane drops at Steveson, another lane drops at Highway 91 to connect to Knight Street, and then another one at Bridgeport.

Other direction, I could see 6 lanes from 16 Avenue to 32 Avenue, 8 lanes from 32 Avenue to River Road (HOV lane included) and then 10 lanes over the bridge.

And this video shows the extent of what we would get for cycling, a connection over the bridge. The rest of the corridor for cycling will rely on the existing horrible network. Cyclists can use the shoulders of highway 17 (SFPR) and can come from Steveston Hwy which doesn't even have bike lanes. How about a corridor long bike path? Peace Arch to Vancouver?
