Much better; the first proposal looked like SimCity 2.

A new render for the Belvedere Convent and Orphanage condo project.

The green building already exists, but it is literally just a shell with nothing (no floors, no walls, anything) inside.

The pink building also exists and currently houses the province's MCP office.

The grey building in the back doesn't exist - but there is a hideous, pink concrete addition to the pink building already there. It's going to be torn down and replaced.

All three buildings will be condos, the parking lot is going to be landscaped into a public garden as it was originally.

This convent is at the end of Margaret's Place, which is lined on both sides with a new rowhouse development. There are two large condo buildings and a school surrounding the convent already.

It's going to be a nice little neighbourhood. And this is far enough away from downtown (well over the first hill) that it pushes the more urban area of the city a little farther.

Montreal's downtown footprint continues to grow. What Montreal lacks in height it more than makes up for in density.

Centre for the Arts and Communications
Edmonton, AB
A dynamic new addition to MacEwan University’s City Centre Campus, the Centre for the Arts and Communications (CAC) will be a consolidated, functional and sustainable new home for the Faculty’s existing programs. Located on a major thoroughfare at the western edge of downtown Edmonton, the CAC will be an elegant entrance landmark for both the University campus and the city.

The building will house performance and educational spaces including a proscenium theatre, a recital hall, a black-box theatre, galleries and a wide range of visual arts, digital and sound studios. With state-of-the-art instructional facilities, the design emphasizes the CAC’s identity as a hub for converging ideas and social interaction. Informal learning, performance and gathering spaces are playfully woven into two main atria, which will showcase a spectrum of student, staff and visitor activities. Natural daylight will penetrate these vibrant cores, enlivening them with changing light qualities throughout the day.

The exterior is a modern, sleek curtain wall façade with wavy forms subtly referencing the image of a stage curtain, an apt metaphor for the dynamics and function of the building. Latest energy modelling techniques optimize the composition of the façade and the mechanical systems to achieve high energy efficiency, which is crucial for Edmonton’s cold winters. The building is targeted to attain LEED® Silver certification.

Only a year? Really? Wow, it's so huge I thought it would be more established than that. Or was it just a college before?

That area around Elbow Drive is actually pretty neat - I've always liked the small retail strip on 49th. It's a great neighbourhood amenity. With more infill like the office above I can see the area becoming a node similar to Marda Loop in scale.

MacEwan is kind of Edmonton's equivalent to Mount Royal College turned Mount Royal University.

Exactly. It is in the process of a 'one campus' consolidation to bring everything downtown, thankfully.

Oh okay! Right on! Except both of your Universities are connected to LRT! *wags fist toward Edmonton* Grrr!

It's neat how both cities' secondary universities are undergoing large expansions/reformatting.

Not to mention Norquest College's, a block south of MacEwan Univerity, expansion also connected to the LRT.

NAIT will be connected this April to the LRT line as well and is building a large new addition as well.

With this boom, and the coming office boom for Edmonton, hopefully that will no longer be the case (at least not as much as it is at present).
