City pay ranks third in country
Survey shows hot economy

Andrea Sands
Edmonton Journal, Postmedia News

Thursday, September 12, 2013

New statistics on Canada's income levels and housing show Edmonton's economy is one of the most successful and dynamic in the country, says the city's chief economist.

That doesn't mean, however, that some people aren't left behind, John Rose said. A small number of Edmontonians earning extraordinarily high incomes can skew income numbers, "soI'malittle nervous about incomedistribution issues," he said.

The 2011 Statistics Canada National Household Survey, based on data collected in 2010, showed the biggest wage earners by province were in Alberta, where the median salary of fulltime employees was $55,507...

Brick by brick, the Kelly-Ramsey Block comes tumbling down

EDMONTON - Ledcor Construction is overseeing the demolition of several Edmonton buildings this year, but no other job is as challenging as taking down the Kelly-Ramsey Block. It is the most complex demolition project that Ledcor has ever managed in the city, said Bob Walker, the company’s senior vice-president for Alberta.

Workers are painstakingly dismantling the east and south walls of the historical four-storey block brick by brick, numbering and storing them to be reassembled as the lower facade of a new office tower on the site on Rice-Howard Way in downtown Edmonton.

“We’ve never done this before,” Walker said. “This would be a first for us that I can think of in our 65 years.”

It’s not the first time in Edmonton that a historic facade has been recreated in a new building using original materials. The Alberta Hotel was recently rebuilt using, in part, 2,000 chunks of stone that were numbered and saved when the old hotel was demolished in 1984.....Developer John Day said his company is building a 25-storey tower on the site at a cost of about $250 million. It would be downtown Edmonton’s first new office tower since the Epcor Tower — itself the first new office tower in 20 years — was completed in 2011.The first two floors will house retail with 23 storeys of office space with good progress on leasing, Day said.....

Looks like the hotel aspect of it might be gone? Perhaps Day has found enough leasing interest that the offset of a hotel isn't warranted?

As has been discussed, the hotel was killed because it's uneconomic to build it, not because there was more office interest.

It's not that the hotel was uneconomic, but that office presented higher returns. A risky move, but obviously he had enough interest in leasing space that he felt comfortable doing this.

The backers were not keen on the hotel at all. And hotel margins are terrible.. it's a rotten business to be in generally speaking. Commercial office is a risk in this city too, but I think (and I'm sure the developer thinks as well) that it won't be too hard a sell.. and a lot less riskier than a hotel

Not to mention the fact that the Katz Arena District hotel is likely all the new capacity we need.

I know of one potential four-food-group investor with related-party hotel in tow, and the uneconomics of the hotel component caused that investor to walk away.

Except the interaction/integration of tower and podium is < 0. They could be two completely different project renderings slapped together and given a similar colour scheme. Fail.

Maybe the project's called Sleepy Hollow.

What a 2-bit render job.

End is near for historic airfield
Report recommends closing last City Centre runway Nov. 30

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Friday, September 13, 2013

The historic City Centre Airport could soon be just a memory following a recom-mendation Thursday to close the last runway Nov. 30.

The move marks the end of an often bitter four-year battle over plans to shut Canada's first licensed air-strip and convert the site into the environmentally friendly Blatchford community that will eventually house 30,000 people...

Had a glimpse of the Winspear expansion last night...

Reminded me a bit of the Toronto Performing Arts Centre if looking from 97st/102ave north. Retail along 97st and a cool car elevator on the north side for a few hundred cars.

Apparently 2016 start, 2019 finish.
