I meant post secondary students. They don't have to pay for any transit fares.

No they do pay for it up front through their student fees. Did you read the link??

It's $10.00 cash fare for me, $9.16 with presto (which I have) and $8.37 as a student with presto, $325.20 monthly. I live in Uxbridge, and it takes between 1:10 and 1:45 to get downtown depending on the time of day. (50 minute drive provided there is no traffic, which essentially only means 10pm-6am)

55km is straight line distance, I think it is about a 70km route.

With that amount of time & money, you might as well just move downtown. Between the $400/month for GO + TTC, and the 3 hours per day spent commuting that could instead be spent working, you're essentially paying a month's worth of rent for a month's worth of long-distance commuting instead.

(this is assuming you're doing that commute every day and have no household expenses in Uxbridge - if you're paying for accommodation on top of that though, then the economics work in even greater favour towards living downtown)

Again, according to the official website they pay for it as part of their student fees.

DIRECTLY from the city of Hamilton transit fare Website:

Quote:
McMASTER UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE AND MOHAWK COLLEGE STUDENTS

If you are a full time undergraduate or graduate student at McMaster University, or a full time student at Mohawk College, your bus pass is included in your student fees. The pass will entitle the holder to unlimited travel and is valid from September until April for McMaster Undergraduates / Mohawk College students and from September until August for McMaster Graduate students. ... Fall/Winter 2013/2014 stickers do not entitle students to ride HSR until August 19, 2013.
...

2013 UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER SEMESTER PASS

McMaster Undergraduate students have the option of purchasing a Summer Semester Transit Pass for students enrolled for the four (4) month summer semester, beginning May 1, 2013. This Pass may be purchased through the McMaster Students Union only for $284.00 for the four (4) month period May 1, 2013 to August 31, 2013...
So according to the official website, students at Mac or Mohawk pay $468 as part of their student fees for the bus passes.

As to your assertion that "students don't pay" what happens when a student wants to ride a bus in July? According to the website, they do.

BTW, the only reason I as a Calgarian am interested in this is that over the long weekend my friend's son (Mohawk student) was complaining about paying for transit though they never used it.

65$/month for a pass here in Fredericton. Or 20$ for 10 rides, or 2.25$ cash.

Of course Freddy Transit is only 12 routes (really only 7 routes since 5 of those routes are another route backwards), with limited Saturday service and no Sunday service. *sigh*

Transit fares as in tickets, passes, coins, etc. They don't pay for transit fares. Flash a student card and take a sit.

They pay a whopping $121.80 for transit from Sept-Apr, so that's $1.98 for unlimited transit service per day. The City pays the rest for the students. So your friends son's shouldn't be complaining that much.

Lets just put it simply to avoid showing too many personal details, I am paying $273 a month for all living expenses. I quite literally cannot do that anywhere else. and if you are smart, those 3 hours can be used for something other than looking out the window. Besides, the TTC pass would be necessary regardless, so really it is only costing $167 in "rent"

Wow, you must either live in a broom closet or have a ton of room mates. Unless rent in Oshawa is cheaper than I could ever imagine...

So is it free or does it cost $121.08 for 8 months (plus another $484 for the other 4 months)??

I can never remember what the dollar cut-off is for something to be free

Evidently, this list is just a man's opinion but still...

Quote:
The most walkable cities in the world

"A major theme that will run through TEDCity2.0, our upcoming one-day conference about the future of cities: the joy of using one’s feet to get around. During the event, Janette Sadik-Khan, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, will talk about why she’s put pedestrians and bikers at the center of the department’s policy. Enrique Peñalosa, the mayor of Bogota, Columbia, will talk about his push to increase the “high-quality public pedestrian space” both in his city and worldwide. Meanwhile, the self-described “pedestrian freestylers” of Bklyn Beast, who combine parkour, capoeira and dance to incredible end, will show off a new way of walking through a city.

[...]

1 -Venice, Italy. Proof that cities really are better without cars — also without (too many) tourists. To be avoided April through September.

2- Amsterdam, Netherlands. Yes, I’ve got a thing for canals — and bicycles. Much safer once you’ve learned how to avoid stepping into either.

3- Marrakech, Morocco. The one hitch to navigating this city’s bewildering medina is to know that, unlike almost everywhere else walkable, Arab urbanism includes dead ends — the result of families joining houses across streets.

4- Antigua, Guatemala. Along with San Miguel de Allende (and Marrakech), it is a triumph of the Courtyard House type, so each doorway reveals a hidden world. Trespassers delight.

5- Quebec City, Canada. In winter, it ties with New Orleans in summer. Proof that good urbanism begets walking whatever the weather."

The absolutely gorgeous new model of train that Calgary just spent $200 million on. Delivery starts in 2015, full delivery by 2016/2017.

Here are the livery choices, so far on the online poll on CTV.ca, the "Buffalo" design is winning.

Bow livery

Buffalo livery

Mask livery

Yes, we have for quite a while. Calgary's city colours have always been red and white.

However, our old livery used to be a hideous pink, grey, and blue stripe along a white train. Bleh. It has been red and white for like 13 years though, I think.

How many cities in Canada use red and white in some official capacity? Quite a few I would imagine.

On another note, wow, Port Moody and Coquitlam's Evergreen Skytrain Line is moving along really quick. Great work!
