Let's get some ideas going for 13/14 winter...

1. What about a community winter olympics: snowshoeing, x-country, skating, etc?
2. Snow fort building competition
3. Outdoor patio party
4. A winter light night where people are encouraged to light up significant buildings, places etc.
5. A guide of the top 10 things to do this winter.

How About reviving the Mukluk Mardigras.

We also need a mdia Buy in. To many complain about the cold. Lets make "cold" not Coldrx, real. say if the temperature is -25C then we say its cold and -30 is fridgid. not like now if the temp hits -5 its cold and -10 is fridgid.

Brother is working on an outdoor winter market for TO similar to that in Warsaw around Christmas. Tents and Heaters thats all you need.

Being from Ottawa I don't know what Mukluk Mardigras is but it sounds interesting. You are absolutely right about people's inability to handle cold. We have gotten spoiled and sold a bill of goods by the travel industry to go south all the time. Now here is my suggestion having lived in Edmonton for a few summers back in the 70's; close Groat Road and have the Red Bull Ice Races like they have in Quebec City or else use the ski hill ( if it still exists ) by the Muttart Centre, create a speed skating oval at the Municpal Airport or any Walmart parking lot. I do like the snow fort competition idea, but one should not forget the traditional snow and ice sculptures which enhances Ottawa's Winterlude. One could play laser tag in a snow fort at night time as long as bozo's don't aim them at other people's eyes. You could have a hot chocolate and chili competition between all the pubs and cafes on Whyte Ave to see who has the best. Montreal has Nuit Blanc during the winter with some art installations outside and some inside. Anything that gets people out and enjoying the winter is great. The Rideau Canal in Ottawa is fantastic when you see 100,000 people of all backgrounds and abilities out enjoying skating on the Rideau Canal on a weekend. Enjoy winter, it is only a few months away.

^^ I think a Red Bull Ice Race would be better on McDougall Hill Road...it has the wicked curves and it showcases the Hotel Mac and other skyline highlights.

I watched some of the Red Bull Ice Race on TV last winter and couldn't help but think how well something like that would work in Edmonton, using our downtown and river valley.

Another event that could tie into a festival could be a track for racing snowmobiles - would be awesome if it could be done at the Edmonton Ski Club near the Muttart.

I think just about anything would go over well in early March, which is typically a very "blah" time of the year where not much is going on, except everyone waiting for spring to arrive.

Not enough. A generic winter market doesn't have the same identity as a Euro Chirstmas market. The one in Vancouver here is awesome. I'd be there every day if only it didn't rain so much at that time of year. Only drawback is that it's as expensive as being in Europe. (Talk about being authentic.)

I'll bite...

I like the idea, it would be very neat......but....

The City Market's goal right now is to firmly establish the winter market in City Hall. It's been a struggle, but based on the improvements over the course of last year there is excitement about the potential of this winter. To go sideways and bring in a third venue (outdoor with heated tents in fall/spring) is not something that is feasible at the moment.

There is potential for some of the vendors that cook food to be located outside as it is not allowed inside city hall.

There's a marked difference between in indoor farmer's market and a Christmas market. Huge.
