GMIA to offer direct flights to St. John's, Newfoundland

Starting October 10th, the Greater Moncton International Airport will offer direct flights to St. John's, Newfoundland, 5 days a week. The flights will be provided by Pascan Aviation Limited, and will run Monday through Friday.

Good news, but I would be more excited if the carrier were more established (WestJet, Air Canada, Porter).

I wonder what type of equipment they will be using? A Cessna?

and we were all wondering which airline and destination, I guess it's Moncton.

I remember a year or so ago, Pascan was planning on flying from YSJ to YQB and YWK, but that fell through pretty quick.

Great to see more service between NL and the mainland though I'm disappointed at the rather steep price, about $830 round trip.

LOL, considering you could drive 2 hours to Halifax Stanfield and pay about $250 round trip (comparing November flights) to St. John's on one of the 11 daily flights on 3 major airlines.

I tried booking a roundtrip in December and it came to $416.

This is what I do. It's cheaper to get a $100 flight out of Halifax and pay for gas and money for the Confed. Bridge AND airport parking than a $500 flight from Ch'Town or Moncton.

Glad to see a direct flight to and from Moncton though, this is something I've mentioned in this thread before. If only Porter or Air Canada would also jump on the wagon.

Well, that's better than the $830 quoted by Trevor, but q12 is right, the service needs to be cost competitive to survive.

Although it should be noted that the round trip car drive to Halifax from Moncton is 500 km, and would likely cost $50 in gas. Also, if you are gone for a week and put your car up in the parking garage at Halifax Stanfield, that would be another $95 (plus HST).

So, return air fare to St. John's from Halifax + gas costs + parking fees would amount to $250 + $50 + $95 + HST = $410.00

This is pretty comparable to the $416.00 that JHikka was quoted when he tried to book his flight.

Add in the convenience factor of not having to drive to Halifax and maybe it's not such a bad deal after all.......

Yeah, that price is crazy.

You can get Park'n Fly at Stanfield for about $60/week. And if your gas is $40 that's only an extra $100 on the a $250 flight.

$350 via Halifax or $835 via Moncton, almost $500 cheaper.

This is the article from VOCM radio in St. John's about the new service:

St. John's International Airport has announced a new route to Moncton, offered by Quebec airline, PASCAN.
VOCM's Lacy O'Connell reports.

The flights will run between Moncton and St. John's five days a week, and Airport Authority CEO Keith Collins says it will reduce travel time from about five hours to two hours. The route will also include a flight from Moncton to Quebec City on weekends. The service is scheduled to begin on October 10th, and marks twenty destinations for PASCAN, which has been operating since 1999. President and founder Serge Charron says the company concentrates on servicing smaller regions.

Interesting - The article states that there will also be flights from Moncton to Quebec City on weekends. This is the first mention of this that I am aware of. The round trip cost for this flight is a little over $700 which is also crazy. You can drive to QC from Moncton in about 7 hours......

I don't know why PASCAN is misreading the local market so badly.

Both St. John's and Quebec City would be popular destinations from Moncton.

There are a lot of ex-pat Newfoundlanders in and around Moncton and CanJet had a successful direct flight to St. John's (before the airline scrapped it's regularly scheduled service and became charter only). It was a 737 service and had pretty high passenger loads.

Similarly, for obvious ethnocultural reasons, a direct flight from Moncton to QC makes a lot of sense. I could see this being very popular with francophone academics, students, business people and politicians. Priced properly, there could be some tourism traffic as well.

But with round trip prices of over $700 to QC and over $800 to St. John's, these flights will never catch on with the broader public.

This service will be gone within the year, which is a sad thing because properly priced and marketed and with a reliable mainstream operator, both these services could be successful.....
