Just noticed yesterday that Jelly Modern is opening up a new location in Suncor Plaza. Where the sushi place used to be.

Back when Jelly Modern was first announced, I thought they weren't going to last a year. Did they ever prove me wrong.

Gold.

What's the consensus on Taco Del Mar? I went there for lunch today, had a couple of shredded beef tacos and was pleasantly impressed.

I've gone to their South Trail location numerous times and never been anything but happy and full.

I'm not sure if this has already been discussed, but does anyone know what happened to Alejandro's, the Mexican place that was sharing a space with Kicker's on 1st street? I was going to go there the other night for dinner and it was closed and all references to Alejandro's were gone.

I heard Alejandro pulled a midnight run.

the flood has resulted in too many stories of ruin and heartbreak, including Alejandro's.

Please, their approach was moronic. They sacrificed all lunchtime business and confused everyone by sharing space with a completely different, and IMO terrible, other restaurant so nobody could even know the place existed.

It may have been a shaky business plan doomed to failure, but no one locating a business at 12th Av & 1 St SW could have anticipated being affected by a flood like that.

This is true.

Thai Bistro on 17th (1448 17th Ave SW) closed- doesn't come as a shock as I never saw another customer there when I got takeout. In its place will be "Long's Chinese Food." No yp listing, no kijiji want ad, no info about this place at all but I hope it's good of course.

—. Thai Bistro was our go-to Just-eat place...

It looks like their Chinatown location is closed for "renovations" - I wonder if flood related renos took too much out of them?

That's our go-to for dine-in Thai, but sometimes I appreciate being able to hide behind my computer screen and order in. I don't think there are any decent options on just eat any more (for our area)... I might even have to - gasp - call to place my order!

After years and years of skirting it, I finally had food from Luubaan on 12th Avenue just west of 14 St SW today. It's a sort of intimidating little storefront that you can't see inside of from outside. It's Somali food- I'd had it several times at a place in Toronto called The New Bilan and loved, but like I say, this place just didn't say "welcome" and thank goodness my partner surprised me with takeout today. It was a chicken stew on rice and oh my god it was delicious. Somalia might share a border with Ethiopia but their cuisines are totally different. Somalis eat rice, not injera, and their stews are a bit like a dry-ish curry. They do beautiful things with goat including a soup based on a rich goat broth. The chicken was amazing. Now it was $13 which is about twice what we paid in Toronto but that was 9 years ago- also partner says the eat-in portion is much bigger, not that what we got was meagre. It was excellent and I look forward to dining in.

I ate at White Elephant last week. It's in the Pointe Inn on 19th st and 17 Ave NE. Very sketchy hotel, but pretty decent food. Very authentic.

Does anyone know of any Dine in the Dark (i.e. eating while blindfolded) restaurants/events in Calgary? I've always wanted to try it.

VERY happy to report that Long's Chinese Food is now open at 1448 17th Ave SW and it's about as far from "western Chinese food" as one could hope. I haven't tried it, but I did pick up a takeout menu and espied other diners' food.

It's Sechuan. Looks and smells AMAZING and the menu is a pure Chinese, gwai lo nightmare sort of menu which looks absolutely amazing loaded with offal, duck neck, bone-in this and that, FROG (which is an important protein in parts of China), and one of my faves, dan dan noodle. They're open 7 days but for whatever reason closed for lunch on Tuesdays (dinner only). I'll be getting takeout there tonight, follow up review to come.

Love having Mucho Burrito in the West Beltline. I know it is a chain, but it is a respectable chain. It has brought surprising amounts of vibrancy to that area and lots of people on foot instead of driving. Nice change for the area. I would like to see a condo there (with mucho on the main floor) but I will take this for now.

Long's Chinese Food review:

OKAY, HUGE thumbs up! Fantastic meal. We got the spicy cucumber with garlic, the diced chicken with cauliflower, and the stir fried broccoli with garlic (could also have got it with oyster sauce). Large order of rice. The cukes are delicious, spicy as hell and not a lot like the cucumber salad we've at at eg Delicious Country. This one is more savoury with a dressing that has peanut in it as well as something fermented we couldn't put our finger on. The chicken-oh my God the chicken- okay first there might be something missing in translation because it was indeed diced (and boneless) dark meat (thank God) but the veggies were long beans and bell peppers, not cauliflower, but we didn't care terribly because the beans are cooked perfectly and this is one spicy, savoury, floral, mysterious dish that is increasingly addicting the more you eat of it. One of the best Chinese dishes I've ever had in Calgary or at any Chinese resto period. It definitely has Szechuan peppercorn but none of the grit I usually associate with it but the same odd chemical flavour- but persevere, it grows on you. It's stunning. The broccoli was the opposite of the chicken: simple, simply seasoned with just light soy sauce and garlic and perfectly cooked, amazing skill in this kitchen to be able to pull off something as complex as the chicken dish and as simple as the broccoli and to have them both be COMPLETELY delicious in wildly different ways. So three dishes and a large rice (enough for three) was $35. I'll be back again and again. I am so happy to live near this place.

Good news. Pios Peruvian Chicken now has a liquor license which means you can now get a Pisco Sour there. Unfortunately, I don't drink. So I can't say if it is any good, but if is half as good as their food, we should be fine.
