Comic Con is primarily locals but people are traveling from all around. I did to talk with a few people yesterday while on the way to work, that came into town just for Comic Con. 1 was from Florida and the other was from Washington.

I don't think their numbers are high enough to push the need for the CC Hotel further. However, the economic impact is currently unknown. Using other Comic Cons from around the US, it is possible that we will be anywhere between $20M and $50M.

They did say this morning on the radio that San Diego Comic Con has approximately $150M in economic impact for their event with an attendance of 150,000.

Salt Lake Comic Con is estimated to come close to between 45,000 and 50,000. That isn't bad for the first year with limited advertising and celebrities attending.

With the success of this years event, I would expect to see next years event be even better with a larger selection of celebrities, artists, authors and more.

Also, Weta Workshops from New Zealand has a booth at the SL Comic Con. They have only been to 1 other Comic Con and that is the main one in San Diego. I think that this also boosts the image of the Salt Lake Comic Con and will help to bring in others for next years.

I agree that most attendees will likely be locals but I think the biggest and best comic cons draw a lot of people from out of town. If SLC can turn this into a highly successful yearly occasion, I bet we could see it outgrow the Salt Palace in the future. Then again, maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part

Pretty awesome what's going on with Comic Con. I'll be there! Should be pretty cool. I agree with others that the Comic Con attendees will be mostly locals, as in native Utahns, but I'm guessing there will be many coming from outside of Salt Lake, and many may be booking hotel rooms. While it's likely not gonna fill the hotels, I'm sure it will be statistically noticeable.

Downtown is expecting record breaking crowds over the next four days. This article sums it all up (although it doesn't even mention the Utah vs Weber football game, so add another 45,000 to the list):

http://www.abc4.com/content/news/slc/sto...-crowds-this/cj0FeZ4eOkyyXxtnsoQ_ag.cspx

I hope UTA can handle it. They sort of 🞵🞵🞵🞵 on the fly. On top of their usual inefficiencies. I'm very interested to know how all the restaurants, clubs, and bars downtown do this weekend. I hope somehow that info is tracked and made available.

I think it's easy to discount an event with mostly locals but there is still a definite impact. Attendees may go shopping, visit a museum, go out to eat, grab a drink...maybe have too many drinks and grab a hotel room. Any event that brings in 30,000+ people downtown is a good thing for the city. I will certainly not be there but I have plenty of nerdy friends that will be.

FutureMayor, just to comment on what you stated about parking garages. I am definitely in favor for fewer parking stalls downtown. We have tens of thousands of off street parking stalls downtown that often sit empty. Having said that, the city cannot approve a project of that size downtown without ensuring that parking needs have been met. This can be done with offsite parking as was earlier mentioned and I'm sure that's what they will do.

Also ABC4's article is terrible. Not only are there misspelled words but there is no free parking on street downtown. It is never free on Saturdays. They also forgot to mention the State Fair and the Undie Run.

Street Parking is still free on Weekends, and after 8 on weekdays.

Stan Lee, William Shatner, Adam West, Burt Ward, Loue Ferrigno (guys an 🞵🞵🞵) will all be there.

William Shatner and Adam West are also doing a show together.. First time in 50 years.. They will interview each other.. That should be amusing

Very excited for Comic Con tomorrow. I shook Loue Ferrigno's hand at San Diego comic con a few years back. Great fun. I hope SLC has something to offer.

I would assume that the LDS church would allow 111 SM employees to park at City Creek. Where else would they park? The Walker Center? I've always thought of the several parking garages downtown as giant eye soars. Each one takes up so much room. The Wells Fargo Center parking garage is the only one that's reasonable!

Parking lots don't get to me as much because it would be easy to plan something there for the future. I think that the parking lot on the corner of State and 400 S. would be a great spot for a future highrise. As I've said before, mid-highrise buildings would look great on the east side of State Street.

Demolishing the Salt Palace is a really bad idea. Because another one would just have to built. But I'm not sure where it would expand. The obvious is to expand over where the AAA center is. I don't think that would be a possibility, though. A Convention Center Hotel isn't even being considered to go there. I don't see the SP being in the same state as it is right now in the next five years. We'll figure out something.

The Regent Street garage is right next to it, so that would seem the probable solution.

City Creek's parking, however, is almost certainly not going to be given away to 111 occupants. Most retail employees at City Creek don't even get to park there. There are sections of parking reserved for employees of the existing office towers, but they might even have to pay for parking passes--I'm not sure. Regardless, the parking that is intended for retail use is likely now under the domain of Taubman, not PRI.

I hope someone takes some pics of all the vibrancy going on downtown.

This will make the Salt Lake Comic Con the CC with the highest first-year attendance and one of the largest CCs in the country.

The new Ronald McDonald house is pretty much completely framed up and topped out and they're beginning work on the exterior materials.

Did someone bring up the idea of demolishing the Salt Palace? If so I must have missed it. Where exactly is the AAA center, that you mentioned, did you mean ESA? If you did you're correct that isn't a viable option, the Jazz organization plan to use the arena for at least another 15-20 years. The logical place for expansion of the expo space, in conjunction with a hotel is the Post Office block, a direct connection could be made across 200 W as 200 S, allowing for the expo space to be contiguous while keeping the Japanese Temple and Japanese church.
