I still don't think it holds a candle to the Stoney/Glenmore/Sarcee/Westhills Way/Old Strathcona Road interchange when that finally goes ahead.

That is going to be quite the interchange. Also, the area is covered by utilities, so it will be interesting to see what would be involved in the construction. Picture below, spoiler since it's big.

More realistically, this was the plan all along, given that they said they've caught up to the original timeline. We've suffered through 40 months of construction, what's a few more for the route to fully open with the safety of the interchanges being built? I don't get it. The more you look at the state they're in now and think about the order of operations, you realize how bad they got screwed over having to build detours and keep 🞵🞵🞵🞵 open.
I doubt this is the case...the contract for the SE is not that different from the NE, and the definition of substantial completion is much further along than they will likely be. They knew over a year ago that they were in big trouble in terms of getting done in time, so they've probably been ready to accept these late fees they'll be paying. The road might be "open" October 1st, but it won't be open in terms of what the contract asks for.

Knowing how McIver has been spinning his press releases lately (ie. The "innovative" solution for Stoney/Macleod), I would be willing to guess that they will call it open for good optics with the public, and quietly get them to pay up for not being done.

Yeah I thought about that but not only is that potentially decades away, but do they intend to build the SW leg to ultimate config right away? If the reserve only wants to sell land once, I imagine they get the land they need, and build as necessary, with a guarantee that the gov't gets to keep the ROW needed for the ultimate build out.

The opening day plan for that interchange includes pretty much everything that's in the ultimate stage. You can see the opening day plan (of course subject to change now) in that document as well. The only thing I can see that is different is the addition of express lanes, but right at the interchange, the main line lanes of Stoney are the future express lanes - it's set up so that there aren't both express lanes and nonexpress lanes going around the corner.

Traffic update for SEST that affects no one:

Closure of 88th Street intersection.

Quote:
Beginning Friday, September 6 at midnight, the intersection at 88 Street
SE and Stoney Trail/Highway 22X will close. The new intersection will
open October 1 as part of the Stoney Trail ring road.

Alternate routes will be available for motorists via 178 Avenue SE and
104 Street SE, with detour signs in place to guide drivers.
I might be the only one here that has driven on those roads.

Sounds like traffic is now going over the bridge at Sundance/ Chapparal. Or at least according to my wife who missed the turn because the new signage isn't in place early enough; she was still in the left lane.

Yep. I drove though there last night around 7pm and they had signs up indicating that the traffic would be moving over to the bridge last night. They looked to just be finishing up some last minute paving on the north side of the bridge at that point but other than that it looked ready to switch over.

So tell me more about how upgrading Stoney in the NW is a simple process, as it's backed up 5 miles both ways. Really simple.

The West Nose Creek bridges should have been made wide enough in the first place.

To add to our confusion...

Quote:
According to Alberta Transportation officials, Thursday’s opening of the 52 St. overpass near the community of Mahogany is one of the final steps in ensuring the southeast section of Stoney Trail will be completed on time.
Ring road traffic currently extends from the Trans-Canada Highway in the northwest to Peigan Trail in the city’s southeast. As of October 1, Stoney Trail will extend its southeast reach to include a section of Highway 22X.
The only construction hurdle remaining for the project is the Deerfoot-Highway22X intersection where seven interchanges () are being built. A dry month of August has helped the construction effort.
“That's the last big piece of the project that has to be completed,” says Alberta Transportation’s Gary Lamb. “There's still a fair bit of work to be done. There's 26 days left until the opening of the project, and we've seen their schedule, and if things work well and they get done what they say they're going to get done in those days, the project will open as we expect.”
When the southeast leg officially opens, the construction workers will not disappear from the area. The contractor still has another year to complete numerous landscaping and fence building projects which are not expected to impact traffic.

Not even sure what they're talking about with the 52 St bridge. It's already open... unless they're saying the full interchange is open, which I doubt as we would have got an update on the SEST site. I'll see tomorrow when I go home. As for the rest of the 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵, well it's just tiresome at this point.

As of Wednesday afternoon there was still a massive fuel tank on the EB lanes just west of 52nd. It almost looked as if they had been re-surfacing the road around the tank.

And as of this morning I can also confirm that what will be NB 52nd is still not paved. Gravel was compacted, but not paved.

Other than the bridge (which should have been built to 3 lanes initially ) it is a simple project. The speed at which they are moving is pleasantly surprising me. But then again I don't drive it during daytime hours.

2nd or 3rd week of November is my tentative guess for all Deerfoot/22X/Seton stuff to be open. They were doing something major involving a crane on the EB-NB bridge over Deerfoot today. Definitely not "last minute touches".

There's still tons of signs to go up, and old ones to come down, despite the big head start they got.

Everything about the original building of the West Nose Creek bridges is a bit baffling...they're paying for those mistakes now.

As for the road widening, it shouldn't be generating large backups unless the contractor is a scrub.

Eastbound Stoney between CHB and Sarcee is pretty much done, and is back up to 100. Paving is hampering westbound between 🞵🞵🞵🞵 thru about 1.5 km past Sarcee. They have 2 digital signs up saying "2 lane traffic, shoulder is a lane". Clever of them, but people are still nervous to do it, so westbound is down to 1.5 lanes, sorta... = backups.

There's no sign saying to stop driving on the shoulder though... so even well after the construction zone where the limit is back up to 100 and there's 3 through lanes, the general attitude seems to be "🞵🞵🞵🞵 it" and people are using the free pass to zoom by on the shoulder damn near all the way to CHB. Oh lawwd CPS is gonna have a field day.

In the northwest... traffic cones are in the shoulder now so it looks like the next part to be widened will be EB between Beddington and Harvest Hills Blvd (hereafter, HHB)

In the southeast... big signs going up over northbound Deerfoot tonight and tomorrow night, around the Seton Blvd bridge; right before it splits for the exit to EB Stoney to go under the basketweave. Should be identical to what's in the old schedule 18... sign on the right might also say "52 St SE," as it does on the preceding diagrammatic sign:

How's the signage looking at 22X/Deerfoot lately? I'll be heading to Mackenzie Towne from Bragg Creek via 22/22X on Saturday and have heard that the signage may be a bit unclear for someone who hasn't driven the route in a while.

Yeah it's not that great. Helps to already know where the detours are, just keep your eyes peeled and you'll be alright.

  • They haven't started cutting and filling the McKenzie/Cranston interchange. That's probably a ~7 week process, minimum. Looks like they're going all hands on deck at Sun Valley/Chap, and 52 St; I'm 95% sure 52 St will be done for opening day, and about 75% sure on Sun Valley
  • Looks like lines are painted on the whole route
  • Doesn't look like the new SB-EB loop at Deerfoot/22X will be ready in time, nor any ramps there that aren't already open there
  • Conversion of the walkway to a third WB lane over the river isn't done yet
  • 61 Ave flyover won't be ready
  • City making good progress on 114 Ave realignment
