I too agree its BS that they can leave these demo sites vacant for long periods of time. I wish the old Wachovia tower at the corner of North and Peachtree was never torn down. That was a big hit to Midtown's skyline for years and the big condo project there never materialized. Now we will have that low rise Proton Therapy center at a major intersection.
I have some hope that this one won't stay vacant for as long. Tech has an open RFQ which closes on Sep. 17th. I'm not 100% familiar with the usual timeline, but I would assume we'll be seeing an RFP and subsequent selection of builder soon afterwards.

After reading the RFQ docs it looks like construction would commence in 2015 or so.

This is true, I was going to say the same thing...but keep in mind those projects fell through at the start of the economic crash. The economy is on the rise now. So these should be a go.

How come there is more restrictions, penalties and fees associated with me taking down a damn tree in the City of Atlanta than there is with a developer tearing down building(s) and leaving almost whole city blocks in puedo construction zones for indefinite periods?

Looks like the GA Tech Foundation is going to be getting a call from this angry citizen demanding a explaination for demoing a building in September of 2013 when the earlist they plan to begin construction is 2015!!!

This My Friends is a CCOB (CLASSIC CASE OF BULLSHIT)

The City tried to stop this, as you may recall, but there were procedural and legal issues that made it challenging.

Atlanta can't create new laws? The City and opponents have been able to fend off Wal-Mart, but can't navigate the system to right this wrong?

Not to split hairs but seems like creating new laws involves legal and procedural issues, not to mention who or what do you mean, exactly, when you say "Atlanta"? Do you mean in the city in general? Or your special interest?

You know this hospital could probably support a MOB or two. Could be a great catalyst for further development!

The site for GSU College of law building is completely fenced off, trailer and a few workers on site as well, I also notice a few trees marked for cutting down.

Actually there is a wal-mart on campus that just opened on 5th street. So yeah, wal mart has not actually been fended off at all. Also CEO Mike Duke went to GT.

Yeah, but to be fair that is a tiny, urban, very neighborhood oriented hybrid - not their usual soul sucking suburban monstrosity.

I am beyond thrilled that Jeff Fuqua was denied at Lindbergh, as he will also be at Glenwood Park. If he forces the issue, this will be tied up in litigation for years.

They have proven that they are willing to go urban with their larger stores in several major markets now. Unfortunately for them, they have decided to align themselves in Atlanta with a totally shitty & clueless developer these last few years.

I share your thoughts on everything you said.

I too agree with the comments above. Wal-Mart is nothing short of the Nutsack of the F'en Devil. If you don't believe me, do a little research on the hundreds of thousands of their workers that receive welfare, food stamps and Medicaid while working full-time. Then re-examine the belief that some jobs are better than no jobs.

FACT - almost every non-managerial job at Wal-Mart costs each taxpayer.

Legacy to build hotel downtown.

Atlanta-based Legacy Property Group LLC is planning to build a 129-key Homewood Suites by Hilton.

The all-suites hotel would sit along Marietta Street near Centennial Olympic Park in the Luckie-Marietta District.

The roughly $25 million project comes as downtown is seeing a surge of hotel demand. Plus, the area is commanding some of the highest average room rates in the city.

Sadly, I believe that Fuqua will ultimately get his intown, full-size Walmart--probably on or just off Piedmont in the area near I-85 and Lindbergh.

So I guess we are not getting "The Times Square South" because this is the same location.

I think that's across Baker Street.

This is squeezed between the Hilton Garden Inn and Marietta. The L shape looks to be above the Hilton Garden Inn parking deck. Interesting. Guess it's phases II of the hotel?

It is not the same lot. This hotel is proposed for a tiny plot of land at the northern side of the intersection of Baker and Marietta (directly across the street from Stats), whereas Times Square South is planned at the larger lot on the eastern side of the intersection (currently, a large gravel lot).

Based on the rendering, it looks like this project would directly link up to the existing hotel on that block (Hilton Garden Inn?), and the existing curb cut to the parking deck would be incorporated into the façade (shared parking, woo! ). This would be great for the Marietta St Corridor, plugging up yet another hole in the street wall in that area (CFBHOF and TSS would rid the corridor of another two major gaps).

Overall, it looks like a very solid proposal!

It's a weird lot, but here it is mapped out for you to help clarify things: http://map.atlantadev.com/?lat=33.76171490896779&lng=-84.39594546136857&zoom=19
