Yes, I'm sure it does take away some of the casual sports fans but it's still a poor excuse.
The only team they support "a fair bit better" is their football team, the rest are basically a wash in terms of game attendance.

I dunno, it doesn't really seem like it's something that there needs to be an excuse for. Torontonians just aren't into watching CFL games at the Skydome. People treat it like it's something we should be apologizing for. Maybe more people would support it more if there were a more appropriate stadium. I kinda doubt it.

Sure as hell am! I got tickets for Manning vs. Manning at MetLife in Week 2

Now I sure as hell can't speak for the rest of the CFL stadiums... but the Flames Group has to do something about McMahon and fast! I've been to 2 games this year and literally missed over a quarter of football in each game waiting to take a piss and getting a drink! A good game isn't the entire experience of going to a game... and in Calgary it's an epic fail, regardless of the team being fairly good!

I think we're both right. Having more entertainment options definitely plays a factor - as there's only so much time in the day and so much money in the budget. However, it's also an excuse for a city this size. It really comes down to lack of interest. If Torontonians cared enough about the CFL, there'd be a lot more people going to games regardless of other entertainment options. It just doesn't draw interest. All the talk is NFL. I was offered to join in on 8 different NFL Survivor/Fantasy pools in the last week at work. It's nuts.

Yea, I'm of the mindset that since I'm living in North America - it's just "Football". If I were living elsewhere, I'd call it "American Football".

Winnipeg's stadium sure is nice.

I still hate the location of Hamilton's stadium. Just terrible.

Ok, so it's not news - but those are my thoughts.

MLSE interested in Argos with eye on NFL in Toronto
Sports empire seems intent on adding crown jewel
Frank Zicarelli,Toronto Sun September 03, 2013

TORONTO - The “For Sale” sign has yet to be erected, but eventually Sen. David Braley will divest himself of the Argonauts and the Canadian Football League franchise will change ownership hands.

And eventually, the Argos will have to find a home to call their own.

At this point in the process, nothing is imminent, but Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment is kicking the tires with what sources believe is a long-term goal of bringing a National Football League franchise to Toronto.

Recently, a top executive for MLSE toured the Argos’ football facility at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus, which has housed the CFL club for close to two decades.

The Argos, when they were searching recently for a full-time training facility, toured Downsview Park, a site where MLSE built a soccer complex for Toronto FC.

Synergies are always explored among teams and the city’s top executives talk often, if not on a daily basis.

Big picture, it’s no secret the Argos will need both a new owner and the ability to control home dates by having their own facility.

The questions remain when and who ultimately ends up owning the team at a time when Braley isn’t getting any younger — and eventually he’ll have to sell both the B.C. Lions and Argos.

In Vancouver, the operations both on and off the field are ideal, making any sale a slam dunk.

In Toronto, the Argos are slowly turning around their off-field status, while their on-field product, when quarterback Ricky Ray is healthy, is in good shape with all the key pieces locked up.

The fact MLSE has taken a look at the Argos, even in a peripheral way, speaks to a vision that clearly involves the NFL, at least that’s the scenario painted by many in the industry, who, at this point, aren’t prepared to go public.

In terms of big-league sports, football is the one missing jewel in the MLSE structure.

It gets no bigger than the NFL, but to play with big boys it will involve MLSE pursuing the Argos.

The theory is that MLSE will need to show the NFL it can make a football product viable — and what better way than by making the Double Blue relevant in Toronto, by investing the money necessary to build a full-time facility and perhaps even a new football stadium.

There also has been this theory that the NFL does not want to enter the Toronto market full-time, fearing it would destroy the entire Canadian Football League. If MLSE ends up owning the Argonauts, it could help prevent the NFL from looking like the bad guy if a four-down franchise is placed north of the border — and the CFL ends up suffering from the increased football competition in the battle for TV viewers and media interest.

Whether it’s some kind of shared arrangement at BMO Field, which MLSE operates, building a new facility, there are many moving parts and so much that needs to be done that nothing is expected to get done anytime soon.

But there’s something afoot and the presence of an MLSE executive in Argoland has raised many curious eyebrows.

Stay tuned because this football saga is far from over.

And somewhere in the background is Paul Godfrey, a staunch sporting fan who has been lobbying hard for the NFL to come to town for decades.

Interesting article. I don't see why the NFL and CFL could not co-exist in a city of Toronto's size. The reality is that the Argos have more or less bottomed out in terms of fan support... I don't think it would make a huge difference either way anymore if the NFL turned up. For the Argos, it's basically down to a tiny handful of diehards anyway... I watched yesterday's game and the announced crowd of 18,863 appeared to be mostly various student groups on an outing that could just as easily have been a trip to the zoo or go-karting. You would think you were watching a sunbelt NHL game.

If anything, having the same entity own a NFL team and the Argos (especially one with TNSE's marketing muscle) could improve things for the Argos.

It's a very interesting proposition, I definitely don't think they'd have both franchises. They'd drop 140 years of history like a bad habit to get those American wannabe dollars.

The beauty of it is that they are so good at getting suckers to lay out cash for the worst group of teams on God's Green Earth that they could turn around the Argos fortunes and make them wildly successful. Of course they'd never win another Grey Cup but hey they'll make money hand over fist.

MLSE screws up things so bad that aside from making money they never have any of their goals achieved. Wouldn't it be hilarious if they made the Argos successful and couldn't get an NFL team?

I wonder if it's too early to call for a boycott of MLSE team sponsors, if they're (MLSE) intent is to ultimately kill the Argos.

The problem with that article is that the NFL will have to change their no corporate ownership rule for that to happen. Highly unlikely.

I'm pretty sure they'd have no problem finding their way around that.

Lawrence M. "Larry" Tanenbaum (born 1945 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian businessman and chairman of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). He owns a 25% stake in MLSE through his holding company Kilmer Sports Inc.

Owner(s)
Rogers Communications – 37.5%
BCE Inc. – 28%
Kilmer Sports – 25%
BCE Master Trust Fund – 9.5%

He would have to be the sole owner without support from MLSE. The NFL isn't stupid, they will make sure their rules are followed. Besides, LA will be getting one or two teams before Toronto is even on the radar. It's a much more important market than Tororto ever will be to them.

Agreed. The Bills would also have to fold or relocate and the NFL develop an appetite for a lukewarm sports market that would add nothing to their U.S. television ratings. The NFL talk in Toronto will never completely go away given the size of the city but it's still a pipe dream at the moment.

I honestly don't know what value Toronto could bring to the NFL. Toronto (as a market) is to the NFL what Phoenix is to the NHL.

Intersting comment for the Ticats forum

Lots of politics involved. BMO belongs to the city of Toronto and MLSE wants upgrades which they can't get unless the city agrees and it is very likely that Ford will demand the Argos be factored in, if the city is going to spend millions upgrading a facility that has been hijacked as it is.

This has nothing to do with the well being of the Argonauts but everything to do with fear that a new football stadium is built and MLSE locked out of football (NFL or CFL) in Toronto for decades or using the Argos to leverage money and permits for BMO.

Not quite sure how to interpret that last part but MLSE wouldn't build a 70k seat stadium for the Argos with intent on drawing the NFL, or would they? A 30k stadium for the Argos would be a waste of money as far as MLSE is concerned, wouldn't it? Lots of twists and turns to this saga, if it happened.

Thanks. I live in Gatineau, and most people who follow football here are Alouettes fans and most will likely remain so, but I tend to stick to my childhood teams so growing up for several years in Ottawa I always preferred the Riders so the Red and Black will probably be my team. (In keeping with this though, I still prefer the Habs over the Sens.)

Anyway, when I saw that Jack Astor's thingy it reminded me of the old Sportsline on Global when Jim Tatti and Mark Hebscher used to refer to the Oklahoma Sooners or Duke Blue Devils as "national" (sic) champions...

I mean, it's OK to follow U.S. sports. It's even totally *normal* for Canadians to do so. I certainly do to some degree. But the lock-stock-and-barrel acculturation and importation of all the imagery and messaging from stateside by Canadians is a bit jarring sometimes. And smacks of something that people do "on purpose" - it's not really an innocent shortcut.
