Hotel is commercial.

Sure there's a few office towers among the 150 towers under construction amounting in 5 million square feet but, there also is about 35 million square feet of highrise residential under construction. If this were a single building, most would call a single use archology.

Other than Calgary, it seems to be the norm for the big Canadian cities to be building far more residential towers than office buildings. At least, that seems to be the pattern from where I'm standing.

That's not to say it is necessarily a disproportionate amount; office buildings cram way more people than condo buildings.

In this boom, that is absolutely the case. While you're right that it seems Calgary is building more offices than residential (by square footage at least), out of the whole Beltline (which isn't very dense yet) we have built 16 towers in the last 7 years, with another 14 under construction and 7 proposed. Most of that is residential, plus quite a few elsewhere around the city. I think that high-rise living is just becoming a new norm nation-wide.

Those numbers I quoted did not include any new hotels that were built. So if you count hotels in commercial then you can add: Four Seasons, Delta, Ritz Carlton, and Shangri-La.

I personally place residential, hotels and office in three different categories. They all have their own boom years, though these sometimes inter-lap.

I'm really hoping that after this nation-wide boom ends, that the governments (Municipal, provincial, federal) really invest in a lot of infrastructure and quality of living improvements like parks, community centres, sidewalks, water mains, and stuff like that.

It makes a lot of sense for governments to start in on work like this when the economy softens since it is a way to generate jobs when they are most needed and since the cost of labour and materials is normally lower when there is an economic slump and demand falls.

Unfortunately, a lot of governments seem to do the opposite. When times are good they feel like they are rich and over-spend, then when times are bad they cut back, making the problem worse. There can also be cases where market cycles don't line up properly, so for example a period of reduced economic activity in one region corresponds with high global prices.

Yeah it is a stupid thing they do usually. Hopefully this time that won't be the case. Also, with all of the tax revenue from residents moving into our inner cities, there should definitely be improvements being made regardless.

Carling/Preston intersection Ottawa showing area with new proposals (basically anything tall), including Richcraft proposal (detailed buildings). The area is served by the Carling O-Trains station.

Four of these proposed buildings are taller than Ottawa's current record holder.

Just playing around with function_d's photos from the main construction thread

Two equally tall towers to the ICE Tower complex have their cranes up.
Harbour Plaza will be 224 and 233 meters tall. So about the same height as the taller ICE taller and just a little shorter than the taller ICE Tower.

I like the effort to give an inkling of what Toronto will look like. That area certainly will look dense. And the drive along the Gardiner (assuming it is still standing on not collapsed...) will be magnificent.

Oh yes, forgot about 10 York.

One York is also missing

1 York, is too close to the Harbour Plaza towers, will take me a while to insert it.
