Flood related crime. This is really sad.

http://globalnews.ca/news/770359/calgary-woman-robbed-by-flood-victims-after-renting-out-room/

Quote:
Kara Hickman says she rented a room in her home out to a couple who said they had been displaced by flooding in Turner Valley. They paid her $500 for the month last Thursday, when Hickman was heading out to go camping for the weekend.

When she returned home on Monday, the couple was gone—along with Hickman’s truck, laptop, cheque book and sentimental jewelry.

The fact the cops are finding some of the stolen items for sale on kijiji shows how bright these people are.

Interviews this morning on CBC Radio with business owners and police about all of the homeless and vagrants that have now invaded the core from the Beltline after the flooding. Apparently there has been a real up-tick. Some of it is more fights, public drunkenness and the like, but much of it is, according to the interviews, an increase in what we normally expect in these areas. Screaming and yelling at all hours, more needles thrown about, public urinating, etc., but still, has the businesses quite concerned.

In unrelated news, police continue to investigate the possible hate crime, beating of a gay man, in downtown Calgary.

I don't work in the core but I've noticed a definite increase in male street-affected types in the west part of the beltline, along 17th and in Bankview, where I live, in recent weeks, including two very drunk or high native guys arguing a few feet from my house in the laneway with every third word being "—." Things used to be much worse in that laneway actually as the lovely property at 2017 14 St SW has a basement apartment that was being squatted by a gaggle of very loud, angry crackheads who'd come home from carousing at 2am or so and get in by banging on doors and windows to get the other guests to let them in but I digress. I ran into John Mar as he and his very cute older child was, like me, picking up a to-go order at Sushi Motto, and we both agreed that the problem is related to the temporary relocation of Alpha House.

As to the hate crime- —. Must have been outside the Back Lot. Hope they catch the motherfuckers.

I live just a little further up the hill in Bankview and have noticed nothing. Gravity is a remarkably good deterrent. That said, I also work down in the vicinity of Tompkins Park and have noticed nothing unusual there either.

Where did Alpha House relocate to? Is it in the Beltline, or is more that their clientele has no central place to go while they address the flood damage.

Right now Alpha House is operating out of the old science centre.

The victim was on his way home from the "Hot Mess Party" at Local 522 on 6th Ave SW. I believe the actual attack happened in Sunalta just west of 11th Ave and 14th Street SW. I hope they catch him too, sad that these things still happen in this day and age.

Death isn't funny and neither is the fact that you owe me a new keyboard.

I would suspect that others in this type of smallish complex would have known the victim, and thus could have become psychologically distraught. The police do not report on that kind of thing. We don't know if this was KW's neighbour, so it could have impacted someone on this forum quite directly.

We don't know if it was your aunt, or sister, or secret mistress either. So I hope you're alright too!

If I wanted to be strictly — we don't even know if this death is remotely suspicious, it could have been a medical problem.

Why are we assuming this is the building KW lives in?

Calgary's got a pretty small inner city, I bet he knows everyone in the Beltline regardless.

Three gunned down in gang-style shooting outside a Calgary Beltline apartment.

The targets in a triple shooting likely spent less than a few hours in Calgary before gunfire erupted, police said Friday.

One man was killed and two others were injured in the shooting, which happened in the Beltline community of Cliff Bungalow on Thursday night.
