A quick search indicates that 36% of USAmerican adults are obese, compared with 25% of Canadian adults. That's a pretty big difference I think, but that doesn't mean obesity isn't a major problem in Canada, because 25% is still really high.

Canadian cities are way more dependent on active transportation (biking, walking, transit) than the US cities so of course Canadian will weigh less. Honestly even living in suburban GTA I don't notice that many obese people. Overweight people sure, but obese? Not really. Maybe obesity in Canada is mostly just a regional thing.

I've never understood how Canada has so much less weighty citizenry considering there's a Timmies on every corner where countless people chomp down donuts and pastries with sugary drinks so frequently and in high volume.

The farther south I go (into the US, that is) the fatter is the average person. Deep South is Deep Fried Everything and waistlines to match. There is no doubt in my mind, that aside from a few cities on the coast (Northeastern, West Coast of US), Americans are generally much heavier than Canadians. We have many obese people here in Canada, but by god, the extremely huge are not nearly as common a specimen here as down in the lower 48 (and Hawaii: those Pacific Islanders are freaking huge).

Maybe so but it doesn't prevent American athletes from cleaning up at every Olympics, (especially in the track & field events), while Canadian athletes stink up the joint (a whooping zero gold metals from the last olympics)

Also, the United States is a huge country both geographically and demographically, and as a result you can basically find the best and worst of everything imaginable within its borders.

Indeed. If the entire populations of the USA and Canada were to compete in a binational Olympics, I am positive the Americans would be leaders and laggards in possibly every event.

Back on topic:
Mayor Rob Ford will have the chance to refute crack video allegations

This is debatable. Who has access to 'the best' and what is 'the best' exactly?

I wonder how the political left would react if Ford won a second term? If they are divided (yes, they would have about 60% of the vote but could easily split it), then Ford could easily win...

I wonder if Ford might not expire during his second term. He looks extremely unhealthy. And with his 'habits'...tick-tock, tick-tock...

Contrary to what diet fads tell you, it ain't the extra 150 calories in a daily donut that make people balloon 20, 50, 100 lbs overweight. And it sure as hell ain't the single serving, 12oz soda that someone might have once a day.

When I see people in the US who proudly tell me that they're "down" to only half a gallon of Coke each day, and bragging about how they "maximized" their value at the buffet several times last week... a morning Tim's is just a whole different league.

Here is an interesting article from Maclean's magazine that puts Mayor Ford's performance in perspective, comapared to his counterparts from la belle province.

Makes you wonder why there is no active thread on this site chastising the "real criminals".

Contrary to what you may believe, donuts are delicious and they usually contain more than 150 calories when you eat 2-3 of them and the nearly 1000 calories in a sweetened sugary iced drink is even worse.

We did have one a while ago. It was about Quebec being Canada's most corrupt province.

Access is a whole other matter, but... the best food, the best of any consumer product imaginable, the best health care, the best education, the best training opportunities for athletes...

And that ain't what the majority of Canadians do.

Witnessing the difference between the crowd in a Krispy Kreme (or hell, Dunkin's) and Tim's is.. enlightening.

I would assume Alberta is the most corrupt province. Tons of oil industry related cash, lots of back room deals, government under single party control for many decades. Just because its under the table and out of sight doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
